OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A man was taken into custody in Oceanside on Monday morning after police say he broke into a short-term rental and sexually assaulted a woman. The sexual assault happened around 4 a.m. on the 800 block of South Pacific Street. According to police, Kwahmell Archer entered the home through an unlocked front door. Oceanside Police said there were 20 people inside the three-story rental when the suspect walked into a closet, got undressed and entered a sleeping woman’s bedroom. The 49-year-old woman woke up and screamed when the man grabbed her, waking up the rest of the house. Police said the suspect then ran back into the closet and was pinned inside by other people inside the house. Police arrived and took the man into custody. 773

On the same day Dick's Sporting Goods announced it would no longer carry assault rifles, Walmart said on Wednesday that it is raising the minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21. The announcement comes two weeks after a 19-year-old confessed gunman took the lives of 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Florida. The massacre has since reignited a national debate on gun control. It has also caused a number of companies, most notably Delta Airlines and Enterprise Rental Cars, to end its support of the National Rifle Association. Walmart said it will begin enforcing the new rule as soon as possible. The company said the rule is one of many Walmart has implemented that goes beyond federal gun laws."We take seriously our obligation to be a responsible seller of firearms and go beyond Federal law by requiring customers to pass a background check before purchasing any firearm," Walmart said in a press release. "The law would allow the sale of a firearm if no response to a background check request has been received within three business days, but our policy prohibits the sale until an approval is given."Walmart added that in 2015, it stopped selling some assault rifles, including AR-15s. Walmart added that it does not carry bump stocks, high-capacity magazines and similar accessories.  1346

NOVATO, Calif. (AP) — One woman in her 80s tripped over another resident who had fallen on the landing in a steep stairwell. Others got disoriented, even in their own apartments, and cried out for help.At least 20 seniors with wheelchairs and walkers were essentially trapped, in the dark, in a low-income apartment complex in Northern California during a two-day power shut-off aimed at warding off wildfires.Residents of the Villas at Hamilton in Novato, north of San Francisco, say they were without guidance from their property management company or the utility behind the blackout as they faced pitch-black stairwells and hallways and elevators that shut down."We were surprised by how dark it was," said Pamela Zuzak, 70, who uses a walker to get around. "There was nothing, nothing lit. It was like going into a darkroom closet, pitch black, you couldn't see in front of you."Pacific Gas & Electric Co. shut off power to more than 2 million people over the weekend to prevent its equipment from sparking fires amid hot, dry gusts. It was just one of four pre-emptive rounds of shut-offs imposed by the utility this month.By PG&E's estimate, more than 900,000 people were without power Wednesday, some of them since Saturday, while crews battled fires in Northern and Southern California. The outages turned urban highways dark and blackened shopping malls once glittering with light. People stocked up on batteries, water and gas and lamented the spoiled food in refrigerators. But the blackouts are more challenging for older and disabled residents who lack the transportation and money to rush out for ice and groceries, said John Geoghegan, head of the Hamilton Tenant Association. He said about a third of the Villas' 140 residents are too old, sick or cognitively impaired to care for themselves during an extended outage. He alleges the property management company VPM "abandoned" its tenants.Geoghegan came home Saturday night to find residents milling in the parking lots, some near panic. "Some expected they would be communicated with, but they weren't hearing from anybody," he said.VPM Management of Irvine, landlord Affordable Housing Access of Newport Beach, and the on-site manager did not respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.Elected officials and PG&E customers have complained bitterly over the utility's lack of communication and inability to provide real-time estimates of when power would be back on.Marie Hoch, president of the Hamilton Field of Marin Owners Association, which does not include the Villas, got a call Monday. She visited the three buildings that make up the complex and found apartments without heat and electric stoves that did not work."I thought it was particularly upsetting that they knew the power outage was coming," she said of management.Zuzak didn't leave her floor until after Monday night, when power was restored. She spent the two days ping ponging from one end to the other, checking on neighbors. Her friend Patti Zahnow, 77, who also uses a walker, says she was too frightened to leave her apartment."It was really dark. They put a flood light up that wasn't working," she said. "They should have a flood light that works."Residents said emergency lighting came on in the windowless hallways but lasted for about 12 hours, not nearly long enough for an extended outage. Battery-operated front doors to the buildings that are usually locked became unlocked during the outage."It's pretty disconcerting for the seniors who were fairly unprepared or have difficulty orienting at nighttime," said Maureen Wagner, 64, who serves as a caregiver for her sister, who lives at the Villas.Resident Helen Wagar, who is in her 80s, was returning to her third-floor apartment from walking her dog, Pixie. She was climbing the stairs, in the dark, when she tripped over another woman who had fallen on a landing.Wagar's knee is swollen. She never found out the identity of the woman."It was black as pitch in that stairwell," she said. "I never did see the girl at all."____Associated Press writer Stefanie Dazio in Los Angeles contributed to this report. 4141

OAKLAND, Ca. — You might have forgotten what it felt like to be in a theater that’s packed with people, watching a movie on a big screen.Carlos Courtade remembers the connection.“You came for the feeling, like you were part of something,” he said.He remembers the energy that this pandemic has turned into emptiness inside his theater, The New Parkway, in Oakland, California.Courtade is The New Parkway’s director of community outreach.“We already, as an independent movie theater, pride ourselves on having some of the lowest ticket prices around town and also, at the same time, paying our employees the most out of a living wage, more than any other movie theater around, so already our margins are already really, really narrow,” Courtade said.Courtade is familiar with the script that’s been written for theaters in 2020.Hundreds of theaters have closed, and many will never show films again. But The New Parkway is unique, and that’s easy to see when you look at its theaters. Instead of seats, there are couches, giving it more of a basement or living room type feel than a theater. What’s also unique is what is keeping them in business.“Unlike a lot of movie theaters around, we had the benefit of having a full-sized kitchen,” Courtade said. The kitchen is a plot twist that’s keeping the lights on at a movie theater that hasn’t shown a movie in nine months. The New Parkway’s staff prepare and package food it typically would serve in its theater but now sell it to customers who order online.“For the most part, it’s been enabling us to keep our heads above water,” Courtade said. The food helps pay the rent at a time when the movie-less theater is missing 0,000 a month in revenue. But when you look around Oakland, like many cities, you can see why just being open is a win.“I don’t think anyone knows what the impact is going to be long-term,” said Marcus Osborne, who started working as a manager at The New Parkway during the pandemic. As coronavirus, social distancing, and isolation threaten movie theaters today, the threat of tomorrow for this industry beyond this pandemic, if you ask Osborne, is whether customers will ever fully come back.“How are we going to continue to make movie theaters and other forms of entertainment important to people if they’ve found a way to live without it?” he asked.“I’ve heard a lot of people say they wouldn’t come back to the theater even post-pandemic,” Courtade added. The New Parkway says it won’t fully reopen until there is a vaccine readily available. It's hard to predict the ending to this pandemic, but like a movie, there is a moral in the story of businesses like this one: finding a way through, no matter what.“Sometimes you just have to think outside the box,” Courtade said. “Something that might not be obvious or clear right away shouldn’t prevent you from looking at things in a different point of view.” 2886
