Bloomberg School of Public Health and Temple University. The study, titled “The Effect of Medical Marijuana Laws on Health and Labor Supply,” appeared in the spring 2019 issue of the “Journal of Policy Analysis and Management.” It suggests medical marijuana laws may improve the health and employment prospects of older Americans. “Our study is important because of the limited availability of clinical trial data on the effects of medical marijuana,” says Lauren Hersch Nicholas, assistant professor in the Bloomberg School’s Department of Health Policy and Management. “While several studies point to improved pain control with medical marijuana, research has largely ignored older adults even though they experience the highest rates of medical issues that could be treated with medical marijuana.” Among those who had a health condition that would qualify for medical marijuana in their home state, a 4.8 percent decrease in reported pain and a 6.6 increase in reported "very good or excellent health" were seen in the responses from more than 100,000 survey participants older than 51, according to a statement on the study from the Bloomberg School. The data came from the data from the 1992-2012 Health and Retirement Study, which is the largest nationally representative survey to track health and labor market outcomes for older Americans. Researchers looked for responses and symptoms that might affect a subject’s ability to work.“The study found that medical marijuana laws lead to increases in full-time work,” a statement from the school said. Looking at the sample of survey participants who qualified for medical marijuana treatment, researchers found a greater increase in full-time work after laws allowing access to medical cannabis passed in those states. The study suggests that the potential negative effects medical marijuana may have on worker productivity are outweighed by the increased capacity of those under such treatment to work. The results of the study may inform policy discussions about medical marijuana, potentially broadening support for more research into its use as effective medical treatment, the school said. Currently marijuana’s status as a Schedule 1 drug at the federal level limits opportunities to study the substance and build evidence that could be used for treatment or policy decisions. Currently 33 states and Washington, D.C., have laws that legalize marijuana for medical use. 2439

is a necessary part of a child's life. But try telling that to Marie Dellafranca, vice president of South Shore Villas Condominium Association at West Babylon, Long Island. On May 20, she sent a warning letter to condo owners Robert and Angelica Parker. Their 4-year-old son Liam loves riding his tricycle and scooter around the grassy triangle in front of their unit."We understand that the weather has gotten nice out but unfortunately, there are rules and regulations in the By-laws," the letter read. "That it is not safe for kids to play on common area grounds. Please take this as a precaution measure so that we would not have to enforce the fine that is association with this. It is 0 per violation."The Parkers looked through 38 pages of the association's by-laws, but didn't see any prohibiting kids from playing outside. They asked Dellafranca to show it to them. She couldn't.Dellafranca later said they received complaints from one condo owner about the children of three families playing outside in a "noisy fashion." The Parkers said the two other families told them they hadn't received a letter from the condo board."It makes us question why he's the only one, considering other children play outside here all the time," said Robert Parker, who works in law enforcement. "He also happens to be the only Latino child. So that raises questions about the possible motive for something like that."Angelica Parker, Liam's mother, is from the Dominican Republic.Vincent Dellafranca, the husband of the South Shore Villas Condominium Association vice president, denies the letter was sent based on the boy's race."Don't make it racial," Vincent Dellafranca told reporters. "Everybody else was told the same thing, and they follow the rules."That's not true. Robert Parker has pictures of other family's children playing outside with Liam.Vincent Dellafranca also claimed the by-laws were written by the New York State Attorney General's office. When asked why children were not permitted to play outside, he cited the rules set up by the AG."We just follow the rules. We don't make them," Vincent Dellafranca said.A staffer for the attorney general's office denied that it had passed such a regulation."The Office of Attorney General does not have oversight of Condo by-laws," the staffer said. The Dellafrancas say they are concerned about the safety of the children playing and other members of the condo community."What if they hit somebody when they're riding or they run into somebody's car by accident?" Marie Dellafranca said.Vincent Dellafranca claimed the children ride their bikes in the condo parking lot. Not true, says Angelica Parker."I'm constantly with my son making sure he doesn't go near anyone's cars," she said. The Parkers have filed a discrimination complaint against South Shore Villas with the New York State Human Rights Division."There's nothing wrong with a child playing outside. It's part of living in a condominium. This isn't an over 55 or a senior community. Children should have the same rights here as anyone else," Robert Parker said.Liam's ability to continue riding his tricycle outside, like any other 4-year-old child, now depends on the findings of a state inquiry. after assaulting a protester outside of a Trump rally Thursday night. The brief confrontation — 29-year-old Dallas Frazier climbing out of a pickup and repeatedly punching 61-year-old protester Mike Alter in the head — was recorded and quickly posted to Facebook by fellow protester Scott Fantozzi. More than 1,600 people had shared the video by 10 p.m. ET. According to phone conversations and text messages with Alter, the protest against President Donald Trump’s campaign visit to Cincinnati had been peaceful until Frazier arrived. Alter and a group of other protesters had been standing across the street from the rally, occasionally exchanging shouts and chants with supporters on their way in to U.S. Bank Arena. 721

in Arizona over the weekend.Officers with the Prescott Police Department responded to a report of a disorderly female wearing a wedding dress who tried to assault an employee at a local business.Once police contacted a group of people at the location, officers say 32-year-old Eric Cordova became aggressive and refused to cooperate. by switching to take-out and delivery only. Some restaurants have had to lay off workers or put them on furlough. As restaurants struggle to stay in business, one Arizona boss is going all out for his employees.Pete Stidham, owner of the Original Breakfast House in North Phoenix, has decided to donate 100% of all his take-out order proceeds to the employees he has had to put on furlough."This way at least they get a little something in their paychecks. It's not the full amount but it's something," said Stidham. The California beach-themed restaurant has been a staple in the neighborhood for the last seven years. Stidham, who has worked in the restaurant industry since 1966, says he knows the plight of his employees."I started as a dishwasher at Denny's 50 years ago. I know how hard it is and how employees are struggling, just barely making their bills. It's tough. They're the ones suffering the most," said Stidham.Employees who worked at the Original Breakfast House told KNXV they were extremely touched by their boss' move."John is just a remarkable man. We're his family. He is our family. [We're] just so thankful. He didn't have to do that," said Seta Garabet, who has been a server at the diner for five years. She, like others, suffered a big hit to her paychecks due to the sudden decline in business, and the move to take-out only. "It's been about 0 less. It's tough. We're deciding what bills to pay. It's a roll of the dice right now as to what bill I'll pay," said Garabet.Stidham, who is in his early 70s, says he could have easily closed the shop and gone home to take a break. The only reason he's kept the doors open, he says, is so his staff can get paid. "I'm a single man, got no wife, no kids. But here we've got 30 employees. Among those 30 employees, they've got 25 kids. Those kids gotta eat," he added.Loyal customers have also been generous to the staff, giving them big tips. While KNXV was in the restaurant a customer dropped off a check for 0 with a note stating it was "for your wonderful staff". The diner is located at 13623 N 32nd St, Phoenix, AZ 85032.This story was originally published by Sonu Wasu at KNXV. 2164
