Plans to build a new 4-acre, .5 million park in National City got a boost this week, thanks to a partnership with the federal government.The Environmental Health Coalition will help the city plan the park and the surrounding area, to make sure people can access the park without having to drive there.National City is one of just 10 communities across the country chosen for the Safe Routes to Parks Initiative.The new park will be near 22nd Street and Harding, where an empty field sits right now. As part of the construction, the EHC will help design safer streets around the park."Kids are trying to get from point a to point b and they have to cross through that main road," explains City Engineer Jose Lopez. "Without enhancements to the road, there's no way a 10-year old or 5-year old can cross the street."The EHC will help the city plan curb extensions, a median refuge island in crosswalks and local trails to let people walk through parks instead of along busy streets.According to a release announcing the partnership, communities chosen for the program had high rates of crime and violence, and also high rates of weight-related chronic diseases. Now weakened into a tropical storm, Sally is pushing slowly inland for what could be a slow and disastrous drenching across the Deep South. Authorities in Pensacola, Florida, say 200 members of the National Guard will arrive on Thursday. Outdoor equipment retailer REI announced they are looking to sell their brand new corporate headquarters in Washington, as they embrace working from home and remote work options.“The dramatic events of 2020 have challenged us to reexamine and rethink every aspect of our business and many of the assumptions of the past. That includes where and how we work,” said REI President and CEO Eric Artz, in a video call with employees Wednesday. “As a result, our new experience of 'headquarters' will be very different than the one we imagined more than four years ago.”The company’s headquarters is being built in the Seattle area, in Bellevue, and is roughly 400,000 square feet and sits on eight acres of land. Corporate staff was planning on moving in to the newly-completed building this summer, according to the Seattle Times. Police are continuing to investigate an explosion outside an Episcopal church in southeast Texas.A package was detonated Thursday outside a building at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, the Beaumont Police Department said."We are very blessed that no one was injured," said Rev.
