SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— In the wake of two serious e-scooter accidents over the weekend, San Diego city leaders are working to update e-scooter regulations. While the scooters are off-limits on all city sidewalks, they are allowed on beach boardwalks. While some believe they are instrumental in freeing up car traffic and parking, others believe scooters just bring the congestion straight onto the boardwalks.Chase McKenna enjoys riding e-scooters at Pacific Beach. He says it is the best way to enjoy the boardwalk."Cruise around the strip right here and that's fun,” McKenna said. “They're convenient because down here, they're everywhere."But what is fun and convenient for McKenna, is a total nightmare for Paul Thackery."PB's great. The scooters are out of control,” Thackery said. He says some areas along the boardwalk are beginning to look like a scooter graveyard. He has also been hit by several intoxicated scooterists in the last several months. "I can't stand them. I ride my bike down here every day, and scooters are in the way, it's dangerous,” Thackery said. “I think they should get rid of them all together. "This weekend alone, at least two e-scooterists in San Diego were sent to the hospital for severe injuries. San Diego Police said a 39-year-old man fell off a scooter just before 10 pm Saturday in Mission Beach. He suffered life-threatening head injuries. Then at 12:30 am Sunday, just a mile away, a 62-year-old man lost control of his scooter, and crashed into a sidewalk. He suffered a neck fracture and facial abrasions.Since February 2018, two people in San Diego County have even died in scooter crashes. The city of San Diego is now defending against four e-scooter lawsuits that claim the city needed to enforce stronger regulations to prevent collisions and accidents.But in a crowded place like a boardwalk, McKenna says scooters are not the only issue."A person on their bicycle can be just as inconsiderate,” McKenna said. That is why McKenna says it is vital that each rider regulates themselves. We met Tracy Grimmett, a visitor from Modesto, doing a few practice laps before taking off for the first time. “Yes, without running into all the people around here. Yes, trying!” she laughed. She hopes to have fun while being considerate, as they share the busy boardwalk with thousands of weekenders."Be courteous around people, go slow,” McKenna said. “If there's a lot of people, you have to slow down, and you have to give other people the right of way."The city of San Diego is now considering making companies install “geo-fencing” on the scooters. That would automatically slow down the maximum speed of the scooters to 8mph in designated zones, including Mission Beach and Pacific Beach boardwalks. 2750

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- With the increase in park usage since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, San Diego Park Rangers are noticing a slight increase in vandalism at city parks and trails.On a scale of one to ten, hiking up Cowles Mountain was a bit of a challenge."For me, an eight," six-year-old Joaquin Santaruse said.He, his brother, and two buddies zig-zagged up San Diego's highest peak Wednesday to get away."It's fun to be in nature sometimes," older brother Mateo Santaruse said. "It's a great view up there, and there's a bunch of cool rocks, and in fact, we found a pink one."Many people have noticed and posted about an uptick in graffiti at parks and trails across the nation. Zion National Park published a post on their Facebook page, showcasing the recent vandalism incidents. In it, they are pleaded with people not to disrupt nature during their visit."We just saw that it was painted all pink, and we were like, 'Wow, look at that rock!'" Mateo said.But that awe turned into a little disappointment for the young boys."The chemicals in the spray paint," friend Aaron Heredia said."The animals can try to lick on it and stuff, and then it's toxic," Mateo followed.Tim Graham with the city of San Diego, says graffiti has both environmental and financial impacts. He sent ABC 10News a statement reading,"Because of the location and size of some of the rocks, park rangers are unable to remove the rocks or the paint safely. The City is looking into contracting with a qualified vendor that can safely remove and capture the paint from the rocks."This, unfortunately, becomes an unnecessary expense for taxpayers. SAN DIEGO — Football icon Drew Brees gave a Temecula, California teenager the gift of a lifetime this week.The New Orleans Saints QB surprised Alex Ruiz at a Del Mar flag football event with a prosthetic leg."Surprise," Brees yelled into a microphone.Ruiz suffered a severe leg injury while playing football in October 2017. The quarterback at Linfield Christian School in Temecula was rolling out of the pocket when he was tackled and injured. The injury forced an amputation of Ruiz's foot.Brees presented the teen with a walking prosthetic Friday."If there's anything above cloud nine that's where I'm at right now," Ruiz said, all smiles after Brees asked him what he planned to do first with his new prosthetic.Brees added that once Ruiz gets the hang of it, he'll receive an athletic prosthetic as well with which to begin athletic training. But that didn't stop the two quarterbacks from sharing a quick pass."It's going to allow him to walk around, get around, and then eventually get to the point where he's able to play football again," Brees said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- The tenants of two galleries in North Park tell 10News the new owner of their building has raised the rent so high they're been left with no choice but to leave. Owners at The Studio Door and Good Friday will both be gone from their current location on 30th Street by the end of the summer. "It was devastating we've been searching trying to find something new another space but the rents are just so high right now, " said Chris Smith, who has been with The Studio Door for nearly four years.Smith says the rent went from ,000 a month to nearly ,000. He says the galleries were some of the only left in the area."There used to be a lot of artists and art galleries here in North Park," he said. "That's what really built up North Park to be what it is and as the rents went up they all just get pushed out." So far there's no word on what will take over the spaces once the current tenants are out. 965

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Nearly 200 realtors and elected officials in San Diego kicked off an innovative program aimed to reduce access to dangerous opioids. Volunteers went door-to-door, handing out information cards and special plastic bags for residents to properly dispose of their unneeded and expired prescription drugs.For the fourth year in a row, the number of San Diegans who died from unintentional drug-related deaths went up. To counter the increasing number of opioid deaths, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore, County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar, Safe Homes Coalition and the San Diego Association of Realtors launched the “Keep Kids Safe” program.10News followed a group of volunteers who were assigned to walk around the Bay Ho area. “I’m not here to sell a home. I’m here to introduce an opportunity to save lives," real estate broker, Robert Weichelt said. In the last couple of years, he has sene a disturbing trend in his industry. “We had people coming to our open houses, going in to take medicine out of the medicine cabinet," Kevin Burke, CEO of the San Diego Association of Realtors said. Thieves would pose as prospective buyers, then steal prescriptions from the medicine cabinets when they tour the property. That is why more nearly 200 realtors volunteered their Saturday to spread the word about disposing of unneeded or expired prescription drugs. Flushing pills down the drain causes pollution. Instead, they are distributing 100,000 special prescription bags that could be taken to one of 20 disposal sites in San Diego County, so they do not land in the wrong hands. Sandy Nolan lost her son, Jerry, to a heroin overdose almost 11 years ago. His gateway drug was inside of their home. “It all started with prescription drugs," Nolan said. That is why she is so passionate about eliminating access to dangerous opioids. “When you’re done with that prescription, and you don’t need it anymore, get it in that bag, take it to the disposal spots, and get it out of your house, right away," Nolan said.
