Decades of underinvestment has left tens of thousands of schools across the country with inadequate ventilation systems, a problem that is now front and center in the debate to reopen schools during the pandemic.Nationally, 90 percent of schools fail to meet minimum ventilation standards. It’s an issue Dr. Joseph Allen has been sounding the alarm about since COVID-19 first shut down schools earlier this year.“We’ve chronically underinvested in our schools’ buildings,” said Dr. Allen who serves as the director of the Healthy Buildings program at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health.Dr. Allen and his colleagues have spent months analyzing school buildings, and back in June, they released a detailed 60-page report that school districts could follow in order to safely bring kids back into the classroom.In order to keep COVID-19 from spreading in schools, two things have to happen: everyone in the buildings must be wearing masks and school districts need to ensure buildings have proper ventilation, the report found.“If air is being recirculated and not filtered, all of that air that’s coming from one space and going to another could be potentially contaminated and spread the virus,” Dr. Allen said.But replacing decades-old ventilation systems that may not work properly is expensive and time-consuming. Because of that, Dr. Allen is recommending school districts also consider portable air cleaners for classrooms.Through his research, Dr. Allen found that if you can change the air in a classroom five times per hour, it cleans the air in that space every 12 minutes. However, the air cleaners must be equipped with a HEPPA filter in order to be effective.Even something as simple as opening windows could reduce the transmission of the virus.“If you look at the cases of spread in school right now, they all share common traits; it’s no mask-wearing and low to no ventilation. When we do that, we can guarantee there will be more cases,” he explained.Last week, the Healthy Buildings program also released a detailed portable air cleaner calculator. The tool allows school administrators to input the size of the classroom, even ceiling height, and then determine the kind of air cleaner that would most effectively keep COVID-19 from spreading.“It is critically important that we get kids back into in-person learning and we haven’t treated it as this national priority that it needs to be,” Dr. Allen added. 2438

DETROIT — Tyesha Dukes says her baby boy, Julies, was born in December 2017 but lost him hours later. She says she trusted Perry Funeral Home to bury her son, but never received a death certificate stating where he had been buried.Dukes says once news hit of 11 fetuses being found inside the ceiling of Cantrell Funeral Home, she got worried and called Perry Funeral Home. She placed the call Thursday, the day before the police raid occurred that turned up 63 infant remains and fetuses improperly stored inside the funeral home. “I had called just to see," Dukes said. "If it’s baby bodies at this funeral home, let me call and see if my baby, you know, (is) buried or not." She says that she was assured her baby was buried at Gethsemane Cemetery off of Gratiot in Detroit, but now she is not so sure. “This funeral home is under investigation." Dukes said. DENVER – A Virginia politician police say is a well-known advocate for pedophilia was arrested Monday at Denver International Airport on a misdemeanor charge of harboring a minor after allegedly kidnapping a 12-year-old girl from Fresno, California earlier in the day. The victim was rescued and physically unharmed, police said Saturday.Nathan Daniel Larson, 40, was traveling with the girl from Fresno to Washington DC when he was arrested at DIA during a layover in Denver, police said.Although Larson was arrested on misdemeanor charges, he is facing felony charges in Fresno County for kidnapping, child abduction, soliciting child pornography from a minor and meeting a child for the intention of sex.Larson allegedly met his victim through social media in mid-October and coerced her into running away with him, police said. On Sunday, Larson flew to Fresno from Virginia and then traveled to the girl’s home.Around 2:00 a.m. Monday, police said Larson arrived at the victim’s Fresno home in a ride-share vehicle and persuaded her to sneak out of her house. Larson made her wear a long hair wig to alter her appearance. He also told her to act as though she was disabled and unable to speak to ensure she would not converse with anyone at the airport while making their way onto the airplane, according to a Fresno County Sheriff’s Office release.Witnesses told investigators that Larson was touching the victim inappropriately while seen with the girl at DIA. A Denver police officer assigned to the local FBI Task Force located Larson and arrested him. Agents rescued the girl, who was uninjured, and made arrangements to have her reunited with her family in Fresno, which she was later on Monday night.According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, Larson is a white supremacist and a well-known advocate for pedophilia. In 2017, Larson ran for political office as an independent, seeking to become a member of the Virginia House of Delegates representing District 31. He went on to lose the race.In December 2008, while living in Boulder, Larson sent a detailed email to the U.S. Secret Service threatening to kill the President of the United States. At the time, George Bush was the outgoing president and Barack Obama was the incoming president. Larson pleaded guilty in federal court. In October 2009, he was sentenced to 16 months in a federal prison and wound up serving 14 months.Larson is scheduled to have a court hearing in Denver on December 24.
