A Canadian judge who wore a "Make America Great Again" baseball cap in his courtroom has been suspended for 30 days without pay.A panel investigated complaints made about Ontario Justice Bernd Zabel stemming from an incident in November of 2016. The panel found that the judge wore the baseball cap into his courtroom, made comments about the U.S. presidential election, and also commented on his political views, as well as those of other judges. The panel also found that when the judge gave a public statement about that day in court, his comments were not consistent with what had happened.The panel hearing was held August 23, and the panel received 81 letters of complaint. Panel members also reviewed a number of other items, including an Agreed Statement of Facts, in which Judge Zabel admitted he "engaged in judicial misconduct." On September 11, 2017, the panel determined there was judicial misconduct, and suspended the judge for 30 days without pay. It's the most serious sanction permitted by law short of removing the judge from office.  1091

A large group of Magnum, P.I. cosplayers were reportedly ejected from Comerica Park during Saturday's Detroit Tigers game.According to the News-Herald, the 45 men were dressed as Tom Selleck's famous character, Thomas Magnum, for a bachelor party. The group also included a cardboard cutout of Selleck as Magnum.Chris Tuccini, the groom's younger brother, said to the News-Herald the group was told they were ejected because one of them was smoking and they were catcalling."I don't know how that made us all guilty," he said.  555

A group of California lawmakers is raising new questions about what the state is getting in return for the billions of dollars it has spent combating its homeless crisis.The seven lawmakers, all Republicans, are calling for an audit that will need bipartisan support to get going. In the last two years, California has invested .7 billion on homelessness, and Gov. Gavin Newsom is budgeting an additional .4 billion in next year's budget. Meanwhile, the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development says California's homeless population increased by 16 percent last year, or 21,306 people. "I don't know where that money is going, and it's being approved by the legislature," said State Sen. Brian Jones, Republican of San Diego County's 38th district, who is calling for the audit. "So if I don't know where it's going, how can the taxpayers know where it's going?"Newsom's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Last week, Newsom unveiled a proposal for .4 billion to overhaul medi-cal and create a new fund that would serve in part to help people on the brink of homelessness make rent. San Diego homeless advocate Michael McConnell, who is not a member of a political party, said he has been asking many of the questions those seeking the audit are raising. "We know the big buckets that the money just kind of disappears into, but what we don't do is we don't follow it all the way through to see how many folks were actually getting out of homelessness," he said. The state's Joint Legislative Audit Committee, comprised mostly of Democrats, will consider the audit request at its Feb. 19 meeting. A gunman armed with a .38 revolver and a shotgun walked into Santa Fe High School in Texas on Friday and killed 10 people, according to authorities.Two days later, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is still touting a shotgun giveaway on his website.The entry period for the drawing began on May 1 -- before the shooting in Santa Fe -- and ends on May 31.Participants in the giveaway enter with a chance to win a 0 certificate that can be redeemed at a licensed gun dealer in Central Texas. Entrants must be Texas residents, per the governor's campaign website, and at least 18 years old. They must also be legally allowed to buy a pump-action shotgun.Abbott's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the shotgun giveaway.Abbott's campaign has also advertised the giveaway on other campaign materials.Vikki Goodwin, a candidate for the State House District 47 in west Travis County, was door-to-door campaigning on Saturday afternoon when she came across a door hanger advertising the giveaway."I was just astounded that he was giving away a shotgun," Goodwin told CNN. "The timing of it just seemed really bad."Goodwin notes she only saw the door hanger on one house and didn't know how long it had been there. Abbott is doing,"Jack Kappelman, a high school senior and an organizer for Austin March for Our Lives, told CNN.The giveaway made Abbott's recent call for a roundtable discussion to curb gun violence illegitimate, said Kappelman.Dimitrios Pagourtzis, the suspected 17-year-old shooter, is currently being held on charges of capital murder and aggravated assault of a public servant.According to a probable cause affidavit signed by the Galveston County Sheriff's Office, Pagourtzis told officers he used a Remington 870 shotgun and a .38-caliber pistol in the shooting.Abbott told reporters on Friday the weapons were legally owned by Pagourtzis' father. His family released a statement on Saturday, saying they were "as shocked and confused as anyone else by these events that occurred.""We share the public's hunger for answers as to why this happened, and will await the outcome of the investigation before speaking about these events," the statement said.It's not the first time Abbott has held a giveaway for a shotgun. According to MySanAntonio.com, Abbott also hosted a raffle in October 2015 during his first year as governor. 3208
