DENVER – An 11-month-old child who died after being exposed to marijuana is believed to be the first person whose death has been attributed to marijuana exposure, according to two Colorado doctors who published a report on the death in August.The report by Thomas M. Nappe, DO, who works at the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center in Denver, and Christopher O. Hoyte, MD, with the Department of Emergency Medicine at the CU Anschutz Medical Center, was published in the August edition of the journal “Clinical Practice and Cases in Emergency Medicine.”According to the report, the infant had “no known past medical history,” yet was admitted to the emergency room unresponsive with a depressed nervous system, then went into cardiac arrest and later died. The report notes that the infant was “irritable with decreased activity” in the day or two beforehand, but “was noted to be healthy” beforehand.A subsequent medical examination on the child was performed, which found THC enzymes in his blood, though the report notes that “route and timing of exposure to cannabis were unknown.”However, the report noted: “Additional history disclosed an unstable motel-living situation and parental admission of drug possession, including cannabis.”It also said it was “highly unlikely” the THC entered the boy through “passive exposure,” which could mean second-hand smoking or breastfeeding, among other things.The autopsy of the boy found he was suffering from myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart that, according to the Myocarditis Foundation, “usually attacks otherwise healthy people” and “is believed” to cause between 5 and 20 percent of sudden death in young adults. But the autopsy did not find signs of bacterial or viral infections, which often can contribute to myocarditis, according to the foundation.Nappe and Hoyte in their report say that they “propose a relationship between cannabis exposure in this patient and myocarditis, leading to cardiac arrest and ultimately death.”That conclusion, they say, should lead fellow medical professionals to consider urine screenings for THC in child patients who show signs of myocarditis and live in areas where marijuana is widely-used, like Colorado. They also recommend that parents be counseled on how to prevent such exposures, writing that children are at an increased risk of exposure through edible marijuana.Their report says they believe given the timing of THC’s metabolism in the human body that the boy ingested “a single, acute high-potency” dose between 2 and 6 days before his death.While no death has been directly linked to a marijuana overdose, the authors also note other instances in which young adults were diagnosed with myocarditis after ingesting marijuana, though all recovered.The authors’ conclusion says: 2816

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - On the 80th Anniversary of Del Mar horse racing the industry is facing extra scrutiny over protecting the animals. This comes after 30 horses died at the Santa Anita Racetrack this past year.One of the newest safety protocols is bringing on two monitoring veterinarians who are stationed at elevated observation points to oversee morning workouts. If the veterinarian is concerned about a horse, they can radio outriders policing the track to remove horses and have them undergo a follow-up examination for soundness. "There's been a lot of concern over racehorse welfare and safety the past few months, it's something that Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has always been concerned about," said Dr. Alina Vale, one of the monitoring veterinarians.But Vale says they're now even more cautious and vigilant, working to rebuild the California racehorse community."The more subtle signs that I'm looking for are horses that might have mild injuries that haven't been detected before, so we're trying to catch those mild injuries before they become major injuries," said Dr. Vale. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club also adopted new medication standards and can randomly select any horse for drug testing at any time. Workout activity will also be monitored closely. DENVER — Farmers' markets have begun to return after a lengthy COVID-19 shutdown — and at the One Belleview Station Farmers' Market in Denver, a laid-off restaurant worker is doing her part to get fresh produce to those that need it.Alexandra LittleJohn lost her job as a barista due to the pandemic. But she used her restaurant connections to buy produce boxes for co-workers."Once I got laid off, people just started sending me money and said we wanted to donate a box. So I found a way to donate the boxes," she said.Her work evolved into the LittleJohn Produce Box Project. Using restaurant suppliers, she's boxing up fresh vegetables to be sold and donated amid the pandemic."This is a produce box project that was founded out of COVID-19," LittleJohn Produce said. "I never thought I'd be slinging produce at the farmers market in a pandemic."She started selling the boxes online and at farmers' markets, like the one at Belleview Station. She fills the boxes with locally-grown produce from Fresh Guys Produce that would usually be sold to restaurants, but due to the pandemic, it's not."It would just go to waste, and the farmers wouldn't be getting their full price for them," LittleJohn said.LittleJohn wanted to help farmers, the local produce companies, and, of course, the people who needed fresh food."We use some of the profits for operating expenses like buying a banner, getting a tent, or paying for gas, but then we also buy boxes to give back to other people," LittleJohn said.They have sold almost 800 boxes so far, and with the help of sponsors, they've donated over 350 boxes.LittleJohn says she's applying for 501(c)(3) status to get grants and do even more."It makes me feel like I'm contributing in a positive way to just get us through this. DENVER, Colo. — Voters in Denver, Colorado, overwhelmingly voted to pass Ballot Measure 2J to lift the cities more than 30 years old ban on pit bulls.Ballot Measure 2J passed with 64.5% voting to lift the ban and 35.5% voting to keep the ban in place.Passing the measure will allow the city to grant a provisional permit to pit bull owners as long as the owner microchips the animal and complies with additional requirements set by Denver Animal Protection.Denver Council member Christopher Herndon led the charge, proposing the idea to lift the pit bull ban in January.Denver City Council voted 7-4 to repeal the ban in February, which would have replaced the law with what could be best described as a “probation” for pit bulls. However, Mayor Hancock vetoed the ordinance just days later, saying in a letter he could not support the legislation because it did not, "fully addresses the very real risk to a severe injury that can result from attacks from these particular dog breeds, especially should they happen to a child."The law banning pit bulls was put in place in 1989 after 20 people had been attacked by pit bulls in the previous five years.One was a 3-year old who died from the attack in 1986. Hancock argued in his letter to the council that less than 20% of all pets in Denver are currently licensed, which "raises significant questions about the effectiveness of this proposed new system."Proponents said breed-specific bans do not work and enforcing the ban has cost the City of Denver more than .8 million.Aurora, Lone Tree, Louisville, and Commerce City still have bans on pit bulls, though Castle Rock repealed their ban in 2018.
