New research shows suicide rates among teens are going up and are now at their highest levels since 2000. Now, pop star Lady Gaga is now taking steps to try and save lives in schools across the country. At Freedom High School in northern Virginia, students Katie Ramboyong and Jake Beyer spent part of their school year keeping an eye on other students, looking for any signs one of their classmates might be in trouble. “You never know when there's another kid struggling that we could help out,” says Beyer. About 550 10th-grade students at the high school spent a week in training to learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health issues among their classmates. “Withdrawing from school, not talking to friends, just not being yourself as much,” Ramboyong says of the signs. Students then alert teachers or staff about any red flags. Ramboyong ended up using her training to help a student who told her on social media that he wanted to kill himself. “I found out that he had tried to kill himself already and he was not in a good place,” she recalls. “The next day, I went in and I talked to both of our teachers that we had, and I told her that he was not okay and that it was serious and he needed help right away.” At Freedom High School, the training helped identify nine students who ended up going through suicide screenings because of behavior concerns. Kenneth Christopher, the school’s director of school counseling, says they received the names of the students because of the program.“One hundred percent it's working, and it is helping and our students are making a difference because they're speaking up, they're telling a trusted adult, they're linking up the student with someone here at the school that could possibly give them outside resources to help them and possibly save some lives,” Christopher says.The program is part of an initiative with Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation. “My dream is that this happens in every school,” the singer says of the initiative. CVS Health is encouraging employers to cover Sleepio as an employee benefit. This app is supposed to help people with insomnia. Through a six-week program, it’s supposed to help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep by using cognitive behavioral therapy. It's encouraged by doctors because it tackles sleeping habits by changing people's negative thinking patterns. But do sleep apps really work? One expert at the University of Colorado says they do help provide certain information that your doctor may not have, like how long you're sleeping every night. But there are other things sleep apps can't do. “Where they fall short is when they're sort of estimating your sleep stages,” says Christopher Depner, a sleep expert at the University of Colorado. “That's gonna be your light sleep, your REM sleep and your deep sleep. In some people they're accurate, in other people they're less than 50% accurate. So, for right now, we really can't use them medically to assess sleep staging.” If an app alerts you that you're getting less than seven hours of sleep, talk to your doctor. These sleep apps are not actual medical diagnostic devices because they're not approved by the FDA. That's not to say they won't ever be approved, but right now, app makers are having a hard time getting the green light.The same applies to any other app that intends to treat other conditions. 1391

A report looking at cell phone data and geographical increases in COVID-19 cases, has estimated more than 260,000 cases nationwide were a result of the Sturgis motorcycle rally held in South Dakota.The 63-page report looked at the potential results of a “superspreader” event; an event where “large crowds, coupled with minimal mask-wearing and social distancing by attendees.” It included researchers from San Diego State University, Bentley University and University of Colorado Denver. The results were issued over the weekend and have not been peer reviewed at this time.The same group has looked at other events, like Black Lives Matter demonstrations nationwide and President Donald Trump’s rally in Tulsa.For the Sturgis event, they identified counties which saw lots of rally-goers and tracked COVID-19 cases before and after the event in those areas using available CDC data.Roughly 500,000 people attended the event, according to information from the South Dakota Department of Transportation, which ran from August 7 to 16.Their research found in counties nationwide who had a lot of Sturgis attendees, the COVID-19 case count in their home counties increased about 10.7 percent from about a month before to a few weeks after the rally."Under the guise of academic research, this report is nothing short of an attack on those who exercised their personal freedom to attend Sturgis,” Gov. Kristi Noem said in the statement to The Argus Leader. "Predictably, some in the media breathlessly report on this non-peer reviewed model, built on incredibly faulty assumptions that do not reflect the actual facts and data here in South Dakota."The state has reported 124 cases of COVID-19 of South Dakota residents who attended the rally.Last week, state health departments in various states issued warnings about residents who may have contracted COVID-19 at the Sturgis rally. States are relying on patients who test positive to report the possible exposure at the motorcycle rally. "We're never going to be able to contact trace every single person from Sturgis," Andrew Friedson, one of four authors of the study said. "So if we want a good-faith estimate using, at the moment, the accepted statistical techniques ... this is the best number we're going to get in my opinion."Using findings from another team of researchers, the team estimates the Sturgis rally may have generated a public health cost of about .2 billion. The other study looked at the average cost of non-fatal COVID-19 cases, and put the estimate around ,000 per patient. 2576
