MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Holly Vo works at a family-owned business in Minneapolis, Minnesota. “All these are small business – family owned,” Vo said. 1986 was the year Vo’s father started income tax and immigration translation services. His prices haven’t changed in decades. “He’s like, ‘we’re a minority business, we need to help the minority community,'” Vo said. It’s a minority community that is now mourning the horrific death of 46-year-old George Floyd. People seeking justice immediately took to the streets. But unfortunately, what started as peaceful protests, progressed into riots with looting and vandalism. “I understand the injustice, I understand the anger, but it’s just sad. This whole street was so dead during COVID, and we were trying to survive. Only to see this – I know these owners,” Vo said. Vo’s business was spared, but many others are beyond repair. Others who live in the community say they’re upset to see their neighborhood in shambles. “It was time to react, but this, all our buildings boarded up and everything. I feel like that wasn’t good to do to our neighborhood, or any neighborhood where people got to live. People can’t even go to the store. People need food,” a St. Paul local said. “I think it was Kennedy who said that ‘when non-violent revolution becomes impossible, that violent revolution becomes inevitable,'” Minnesota Psychological Association president Willie Garrett said. BILOXI, Miss. – In the lobby of one Mississippi hotel, people aren’t the only ones checking in and out – so are the dogs. “They see that cage. They're like, ‘What is it?’” said the hotel’s director of sales, Teresa Johnston. The gazebo-like kennel is the temporary home for Basil, a 6-month-old terrier mix up for adoption from a local shelter and ready for checkout in the hotel’s lobby. “The guest just gives us their room number and the sweet little puppy goes up,” Johnston said. If the guest wants to adopt them, the dog goes home with them upon checkout. It’s part of a partnership between this Home2 Suites hotel near Biloxi, and the Humane Society of South Mississippi. The idea is Johnston’s brainchild. “It's that simple,” she said. “And they've given us the ability to adopt right from the property.” The hotel hosts one shelter dog at a time; all are already spayed and neutered. It’s an out-of-the box effort to try to bring down overcrowding at the local animal shelter. “We have to go out into our community and get a little bit more involved in ways that people wouldn't really associate an animal shelter with,” said Bianca Janik, with the Humane Society of South Mississippi. “And so that's a big part of why this program is so successful, is because they don't expect to see a shelter dog.” Since the program began late last year, more than 30 dogs have been adopted at the hotel by people who fell for those puppy dog eyes. The hotel is seeing an added benefit, too. “A lot of people stay at this hotel because of this program,” Johnston said. “And a lot of people spread the love.” Puppy love, that is.In addition to the hotel in Biloxi, another hotel in Mississippi has also started a similar dog adoption program. 1751

DENVER, Colo. -- Megan Fischer’s life story is one of strength and triumph. Her black belt in taekwondo is proof of her ability to persevere when mind and body are pushed to their limits. It’s a challenge she chooses to take part in. However, there was a time about 15 years ago when she had to overcome a challenge that wasn't planned. “In June of 2001, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. It was explained to me as being roughly the size of an average-sized human fist. So relatively large in the head of a 6-year-old,” Megan Fischer said. Fischer is a childhood cancer survivor. “I remember just kind of a lot of times feeling like ‘why I am I here, why am I in this situation where I’m being hurt.'” After a surgery to remove the tumor, Fischer underwent chemotherapy for 11 months. It made her very sick. But it worked, and a couple years later, Fischer was cancer free. “Now I just kind of try and advocate for other kids with cancer, and kind of help them through.” Fischer is hoping to raise awareness of the shortage of the chemo drug Vincristine. It was part of her treatment many years ago. “I don’t know if it was the reason why I was able to have so much success in my tumor disappearing, but I definitely know that the side effects of Vincristine are pretty terrible. So I don’t think that my doctors would have put me on it if they didn’t think it was going to play a role in my chemotherapy treatments,” Fischer said. Dr. Lia Gore is the Chief of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant at Children’s Hospital Colorado. She says Vincristine is the backbone of many chemotherapy regimens used. “It is actually a critical element of therapy for leukemia, for some childhood brain tumors, for several other kinds of cancers,” Dr. Gore said. She says there are two primary companies that produce Vincristine, and one recently decided to stop supplying the drug. Dr. Gore says hospitals were given very little warning. “Teva [Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.] which was a very large supplier – large volume supplier – just decided to stop making this drug. They cited a ‘business decision.’” Dr. Gore says a drug as common and basic as Vincristine isn’t as profitable. The other company, Pfizer, has stated it'’s planning to 2265

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in an address Thursday that intelligence from "multiple sources" indicates that the Ukrainian jetliner that crashed on Tuesday was shot down by an Iranian surface to air missile. Trudeau said the intelligence was confirmed by both Canada "and its allies." He added that the incident "may have been unintentional." Trudeau's address came hours after two U.S. officials said it was “highly likely” that an Iranian anti-aircraft missile downed the Ukrainian plane, killing all 176 people on board. At least 63 of those victims were Canadian citizens.“On behalf of all Canadians, I want to express my deepest condolences to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one,” said Trudeau. “Your loss is indescribable, and this is a heartbreaking tragedy.”When asked if he thought the United States was at least partially responsible for the deaths of Canadians on board the plane, Trudeau said it was "too early to draw conclusions."In the coming days, Trudeau says his government will continue to work closely with its partners to ensure that the crash is thoroughly investigated. “Canadians have questions and they deserve answers,” said Trudeau. President Donald Trump is suggesting he believes Iran was responsible. He is dismissing Iranian claims that it was a mechanical issue that brought down the plane — and is denying any U.S. responsibility. The crash came just a few hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack against Iraqi military bases housing U.S. troops amid a confrontation with Washington over a U.S. drone strike that killed an Iranian Revolutionary Guard general. 1647
