When 4-year-old Mateo forgot his favorite toy, Bear, in San Diego during a recent trip, employees of a local hotel made sure Bear had a good time in America’s Finest City.Mateo and his parents visited San Diego earlier this month. They didn’t realize they left Bear in their hotel room at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay. Employees were able to find Bear, but made sure he enjoyed his extended vacation in San Diego before sending him back to Los Angeles. Bear enjoyed the hotel pool and water slide, lunch, and the spa before his trip back home. Hotel employees took photos of Bear’s adventures and sent him back home to his family, along with a few goodies for Mateo.Mateo and his family are relatives of 10News reporter Melissa Mecija. 744

John McCain's family announced Friday that he was ending medical treatment?for aggressive brain cancer, the news shook Capitol Hill and prompted support from his Republican and Democratic colleagues alike. But one prominent voice was missing: President Donald Trump's.The White House press office did not react to the news, and when Trump traveled to Ohio in the evening he did not mention the ailing senator in a nearly hour-long speech to Ohio Republicans, which ran a gamut of topics from the death of Mollie Tibbetts to NFL protests to Kanye West.In past months, Trump has frequently referenced McCain's 2017 health care vote on the campaign trail without naming him, drawing the ire of the Arizona Republican's family."One of our wonderful senators said 'thumbs down' at 2 o'clock in the morning," the President said at a campaign event for New York's Rep. Claudia Tenney earlier this month.The senator's daughter, conservative commentator Meghan McCain, called Trump's comments "gross and pathetic" at the time.Although Trump claimed the Senate was one vote away, in reality the vote was only to go to conference with the House on the Senate's "skinny repeal" of Obamacare.The President did not repeat that reference, which has become a familiar refrain in his stump speech, on Friday evening.Trump also did not mention McCain at a signing ceremony earlier this month at Fort Drum, New York, for a defense spending bill the senator had spearheaded, the John S. WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — If dedication to a passion distinguishes a champion from a crowd, Marlys Halbeisen just might be the one who stands out.“Nothing would be anything without her,” said Tamera Halbeisen, Marlys' daughter-in-law.“They’re not just getting a card, they’re getting a message from us saying – ‘We care about you,’” Marlys Halbeisen said.For the past three years, Marlys has transformed her Wheat Ridge home into a smaller version of Santa’s workshop for a cause near and dear to her heart.“My husband was in the military,” Marlys said. “He served in the Korean War.”In 2018, she personalized 2,700 Christmas cards for troops overseas.Last year, she did 18,000. And this year — an astounding 40,000.“The pandemic was good,” Marlys said, laughing. “I couldn’t go anywhere, so I just worked on cards.”KMGH first met Marlys last year, when the company she had lined up to ship the cards simply vanished.In the days that followed, KMGH viewers stepped up and donated so much money to the TV station's fund, that they not only paid for the shipping last year, they were able to pay for the cards and shipping this year, as well.“After visiting three stores, I bought 35,000 cards,” Marlys said.She also received about 5,000 donated cards.“Cards come every day," Marlys said. “Yesterday, I got a bag of cards.”The plan this year was to have multiple card-writing parties. That didn’t happen.“We were going to have everybody for the fun night – write the cards,” Marlys said. “Well, of course, the pandemic prevented that.”And yet, somehow, this 78-year-old would find the silver lining.“It was wonderful,” Marlys said. “I was never bored. Everybody said, ‘Oh, ‘I’m so bored.’ And I go, ‘Well, why don’t you write some cards?’”It’s also been said that one can’t expect everyone to have the same dedication as one does one's self.“Well, you know, I always thought that you find the best help at the end of your arms," Marlys said.And so it was. This one woman show who amazed us last year did it again this year.“Beyond proud,” Tamera said. “I mean, this has just given her even more dedication.”“This does make such a huge difference in a GI’s life,” said James Boxrud, manager with the U.S. Postal Service in Denver. “I remember being overseas at Christmas when I was in the service.
