The visit comes as the President backed off threats to close the US-Mexico border in the near future, but threatened to slap tariffs on automobiles made in Mexico. Tensions at the border reached a boiling point in November of 2018, when Trump said it was a "good time for a government shutdown if he didn't receive funding for the border wall. "I think probably, if I was ever going to do a shutdown over border security, when you look at the caravans, when you look at the mess, when you look at the people coming in, this would be a very good time to do a shutdown," Trump said. (KGTV) – Federal investigators are continuing to look into the backgrounds and motives of the El Paso and Dayton shooting suspects to determine if the shootings were instances of hate crime that may have been inspired by the Poway synagogue shooting.<br /><br />The El Paso shooter was taken into custody after killing at least 20 at a Walmart store on Aug. 3. Investigators said the 21-year-old suspect pulled the trigger just 20 minutes after posting a racist manifesto.<br /> <br />Hours later, police in Dayton shot and killed a man who opened fire at a downtown entertainment district. Multiple people, including the gunman’s sister, died at the hands of the gunman.<br /> <br />Sociologist Dr. Pete Simi studies political extremism and violence at Chapman University. Pretty young."<br /><br />Simi also said the young, tech-savvy generation connects with like-minded people on anonymous online forums like 8chan.<br /> <br />In his manifesto published on 8Chan, the El Paso shooter posted: "In general, I support the Christchurch shooter and his manifesto. This attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas."<br /><br />Earlier this year, the suspect in the Poway synagogue shooting shared a similar message on 8chan in which he also praised the work of the New Zealand mosque shooter.<br /><br />"In some cases, they talk about is how you could've been more active, or you could've killed more people if they had done X-Y-Z," Simi said. "Or they're discussing the relative merits of this type of violence and pros and cons. It's really a cesspool environment."<br /><br />At this point, the Dayton suspect's motive has not been confirmed. But he too is a young, lone-acting shooter who wore body armor. FBI investigators are now digging into his digital background to find answers.<br /><br />"What may connect them though is there may be some kind of copycat aspect to it," Simi said.<br /><br />In light of the mass shootings, Frederick Brennan, the founder of 8chan, demanded the site be shut down.<br /><br />He said he created the website in 2013 as a free speech forum, but relinquished ownership in 2015. 2826

(KGTV and AP) -- A Coronado parachutist jumped out of a plane over Normandy Wednesday, just as soldiers did 75 years ago, according to the Associated Press. The parachutists were honoring the airborne soldiers who jumped into gunfire ahead of the June 6 1944 seaborne invasion. 97-year-old D-Day veteran Tom Rice was among the paratroopers who leapt out of planes that day. According to the Associated Press, Rice jumped in tandem Wednesday into roughly the same area he landed on D-Day. “It went perfect, perfect jump,” Rice said following the jump. “I feel great. I’d go up and do it again.”On D-Day, Rice jumped with the 101st Airborne Division, landing safely despite catching himself on the exit and a bullet hitting his parachute. Rice flew down Wednesday with the stars and stripes flag beneath him, landing with loud applause. Other parachutists jumped with World War II souvenirs, some of which were worn by their grandfathers into battle. Rice said following the jump that he feels he represents a whole generation. (KGTV) — California voters have rejected a measure that would reinstate affirmative action based on race and gender.Proposition 16 would have ended the ban on affirmative action, allowing state and local entities to consider race, sex, color, ethnicity, and national origin in public education, public employment, and public contracting — to the extent allowed under federal and state law.Californians voted against the measure 56% to 44%, with 72% of precincts reporting.Critics of the proposition pointed to a previous prop, Prop 209, as to why Californians should vote against it.“The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin, in the operation of public employment, public education, and public contracting,” opposition stated in reference to a passage from Prop 209. 899

(KGTV) — In-state tuition for the University of California system will not increase for the next academic year, UC President Janet Napolitano announced Wednesday.The university system says this is the seventh time in eight years tuition for California residents has not been increased.“We are optimistic about our strong partnership with the governor and the legislature and will work collectively to identify additional resources, in lieu of tuition revenues, to ensure that UC students can succeed,” said Napolitano.The estimated tuition for California residents during the 2018-19 academic year is currently about ,300 (living on campus) to ,400 (living off campus.)
