SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new program at the University of San Diego will give students a crash course in cybersecurity, one of the fastest-growing fields in the region.USD partnered with online education company Fullstack to offer the 26-week course. They say people who take it will be ready to apply for the thousands of available jobs that companies in San Diego are having a hard time filling."When they're done, they could go into software engineering, software development, web development, cybersecurity," says Andy Drotos, USD's Director of Professional and Public Programs. "There's a long list of jobs available in all of those areas."According to a 2019 study by the San Diego Cyber Center of Excellence, there are more than 150 cybersecurity firms across San Diego. They create 8,450 jobs -- that's an 11% jump from 2016. Some estimate there are around 4,000 open positions in the cybersecurity field."There's a demand for staff who have previous work experience and can apply that to new roles," says Andy Haas, a Chief Engineer at Booz Allen Hamilton. He says his company is always looking for people to fill cybersecurity roles."It really is a growing need across companies, across industries here in the region," says Haas.The boot camp-style course at USD has classes that are taken online, twice a week. There's also a Saturday class that meets both in-person and online. Drotos says it's perfect for people looking to make a career change."If you have an affinity for technology, or you have an interest, you don't need a degree," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man arrested Tuesday after leading authorities on a pursuit through the East County Tuesday is being charged with two separate stabbings that occurred hours earlier.San Diego County Sheriff's (SDSO) deputies arrested Patrick Douglas, 51, near Highway 94 and Freezer Blvd. following a vehicle pursuit with deputies earlier Tuesday.Douglas was charged with two counts of attempted murder in connection with two stabbings the same day in El Cajon and La Mesa.Deputies said the La Mesa stabbing occurred at the 7-Eleven at 4610 Avocado Blvd. A female delivery driver for Frito Lays, identified as 35-year-old Dina Hammond, staggered into the store with multiple stab wounds to her upper torso after having just made a delivery. 757

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new pilot program in San Diego hopes to break the barrier between older adults and ridesharing apps. Together, Jewish Family Service (JFS) and the Ed Brown Center are testing an outreach and education program connecting older adults with free ridesharing services so they can participate in health and wellness programs.The pilot program is part of a partnership with Lyft and the National Council on Aging (NCOA). The Ed Brown Center was one of three senior centers selected from across the country.The goal is to understand whether ridesharing can improve an older adult’s well-being by enabling them to travel to their local senior center to take part in activities such as health classes, nutrition programs, lifelong learning, and social opportunities.JFS partnered with Lyft two years ago to provide rides to seniors and individuals receiving breast cancer treatment. Called “On the Go: Navigator,” the program allows older adults to easily book rides to the grocery store, doctor’s appointments and more, without a smartphone. With this service, seniors must pay for the trip, as well as a service fee. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A pair of North San Diego County residences may become the latest local site to receive a national historic place designation.The Boathouses in Encinitas will be considered at an Aug. 1 meeting by the California State Historical Resources Commission to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.On 3rd Street, the pair of boathouses, known as the S.S. Moonlight and the S.S. Encinitas, sit blocks from the water but remain very much connected to 1920s life on the water. They were always intended to be homes and not actual vessels, but also meant to replicate the appearance and scale of boats at the time.Today, the homes represent what the California agency calls "an architecturally significant example of Fantasy-themed programmatic residential architecture." In short: Residential architecture meant to resemble something other than a traditional building.The boathouses were purchased by the Encinitas Preservation Association in 2008 and are currently rented out as private homes. Once the loan is paid off though, the plan is to convert the pair of quirky dwellings into a small museum.But explorers can visit the homes anytime on 3rd St. or do so with a helping of history from the Encinitas Historical Society during guided walking tours every third Saturday between Sept. and July. 1564
