SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Newly-elected San Diego District 4 councilwoman Monica Montgomery is vowing to improve the relationship between her community and the police department. On Monday, she was unanimously appointed to the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee. More than a dozen community members spoke during a special meeting on Monday, backing Montgomery. The overwhelming support for her appointment quickly turned to frustration and anger towards the rest of the council and the police department about Aleah Jenkins, who died in SDPD custody early this month. Montgomery says she hears the community's frustration and is ready to get to work. "A lot of this stems just not from the support of me, but the desire to have real action in our community when it comes to our police and community relations," said Montgomery.She plans on taking a closer look at an SDSU racial profiling study within the department and look into possibly giving the Community Review Board subpoena powers to allow them to perform independent investigations and obtain sworn testimony during alleged police misconduct. "I'm confident we'll do the right thing. Everyone will need to do the right thing; we're at a crossroads and we need to do the right thing by our people and by our officers," added Montgomery. The police department insists there is no evidence of force used during Jenkins' arrest and is referring all questions to the district attorney. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police are looking for the thief who committed a brazen robbery at a South Park metaphysical shop, stealing a ,000 crystal ball in broad daylight in front of store staff and other customers.The theft occurred Monday afternoon around 12:30 p.m. at Crystal Blue Vibrations, San Diego Police said. "This was a lot worse than we thought," co-owner Andrew Lucas told 10News. "That's when we went to the video tape and it showed everything."The thief could be seen casually walking through the store, chatting with an employee behind the counter. He then walked over to the front display, which included several large crystal spheres. He reached in to grab an expensive one, but knocked over a shelf, leaving shattered glass all over and drawing the attention of the employee. However, it appears the employee did not realize the man was attempting to steal the item. While the employee was focused on cleaning up the mess, the the thief can be seen grabbing the crystal ball, placing it on the ground, dribbling it like a soccer ball to the front door, then bending over to pick it up and walk out. "I thought I'd seen it all," Lucas said. "Yeah, it's pretty brazen. It's heartbreaking."Lucas says he plans to limit how much access customers have to certain items in the future. "And more security, but I guess that's what the world is coming to."A police report has been filed. Lucas hopes someone may recognize the thief from the surveillance video and will come forward to identify him. 1513

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police were searching for a suspect following a violent shooting in the Midway District on Wednesday night.San Diego Police said officers received a call of shots fire followed by a vehicle crashing into a building at Kenyon St. and Kemper St. just after 6 p.m. The car was located behind a shopping center in the 3600 block of Midway Dr., SDPD said.Officers arrived to find a man behind the steering wheel of a grey Acura that collided with a retaining wall. The man had been shot at least once. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim has not been identified but was described as a possible Hispanic male between 18 and 25 years old.Police are searching for a suspect, but say the investigation is still in its early stages. Witnesses heard a car speed off, but police did not immediately have a suspect description. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Monday places of worship in San Diego had a unified message, telling believers not to fear.The Pittsburgh shooting at Tree of Life killed 11, and the pain was felt across the country. On Sunday at Beth Israel parents brought their children for religious classes and spoke about the massacre, "their utter dismay, sadness, shock at the horrible terror in Pittsburgh," Rabbi Michael Berk of Beth Israel said.He says Jews have faced persecution for hundreds of years, that's why their synagogue is housed inside a tall fence, with a guard shack out front and security cameras dotting the campus."This is a house of worship, but we have to have security here, all the time that we're here, and Jewish organizations have to do that and look at Israel what it has to do to keep secure," Berk said.In Liberty Station, Safety Director for Rock Church Mike Diggs says they've had dozens of threats over the past decade, from bombings to an active shooter, "threats of people burning the church down, threats of people filling many body bags.""We should not let any threat take our joy away or our ability to worship away," Diggs said.Many sanctuaries spoke with their congregations over the weekend on their security procedures in place and what heightened security they have currently."Leaders of the congregation especially, all the staff that works here, the religious school people, personnel and faculty, we are all given training from time to time," Berk said."Even though they may not be able to see that we're doing some things, some things they may notice, some things they may not, but us as an organization are taking potential threats seriously and taking steps and actions to be proactive," Diggs said there are personnel with firearms during service to protect the congregation.Rock Church has an annual Safety and Security Conference that anyone can attend. Their security team also goes to other churches to educate them on what they can do."When bad things have happened we have never presumed that God is done with us... We cling to hope, we clean ourselves up and dust ourselves off, and we put one foot in front of the other, and we keep on going...
