View this post on Instagram March 25th 2020 ?? We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now. We’ve planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn’t have guests at our wedding. This was a very difficult decision but important to keep everyone safe. We wish all of our friends and family could have been there with us, however it’s lovely that we will be able to share photos and videos. Right now we’re encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward during this profound time in history. Today we celebrated life and revelled in every beautiful moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens. Mum helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad’s memory. We shared tears and smiles and love. A family in Ohio says they're excited to add another family member."We’re anti-gender reveal normally,” said Love Gwaltney.Not this time — for this kid, they’re doing it big.The Akron family got a cake, a professional photographer and a box filled with balloons, but instead of something pink or blue popping out, their oldest child, Grey Schoolcraft, emerged."The gender reveal was kind of our way of telling family,” said Gwaltney.They revealed to the family their firstborn, who used to be their daughter, is now their son. Love says they got it wrong 17 years ago, so she and her son's stepdad Brandon Gwaltney threw a gender reveal party just for him."We’ve always been very open and very embracing with the kids and how they feel,” said Brandon.The rising senior says it wasn’t easy coming to terms with it all."It was a long, long, long, long process,” said Grey.At first, Grey says he wasn’t sure where he felt most comfortable."I originally said that I was non-binary, and then eventually it became that I was gender fluid and I jumped between a lot of different labels before I finally found something that kind of fit,” he said.After the photoshoot and social media post, Grey’s immediate and extended family have embraced him as well as thousands of strangers on the internet, but of course, there are the negative comments."If you’re going to claim that somebody dosen’t know who they are, then you need to stop assuming that somebody’s allowed to be straight then at 17 and it's just the heteronormative to assume everyone is straight until they say otherwise,” said Grey.Grey’s parents say they've gotten their fair share of concerns too."I don’t think it's as crazy and abnormal as people might think, when you actually get down to it and think about it feels mostly like stuff that we went through when we were trying to figure out who we want to be and what we want to grow up to be and identify as,” said Brandon.Each time they look back at this day and see Grey’s contagious smile, Love and Brandon say they don’t regret a thing."People always ask me, they’re like well what if Grey changes his mind?” said Love. “My response to that is I’d rather 100 percent support Grey in the label and the platform that he’s at and him change his mind then to not support him and realize down the road that this is his final destination and I have failed my child.” WEWS' Amanda VanAllen first reported this story. 2445

DENVER -- The community is rallying around a downtown shoeshiner whose business hasn’t been the same since the pandemic began.When the pandemic hit back in March, Downtown Denver started to look like a ghost town, but one man was still showing up for work every day."A shoeshiner is based on four categories: wisdom, knowledge, art and pride," Claude Thompson said. "I want my members to know I will always be there for them rain, snow, shine, it doesn’t matter."Thompson has been calling the 16th Street Mall his office for over two decades. Shining the shoes of tourists, locals, business people, and even mayors."If you are in the business world, your shoes and boots should represent your job; you go to work with a dirty shoe on, you are not going to close the deal," Thompson said.The fast-talking comedian is somewhat of a local celebrity in the area."I keep my shoes so waterproofed I believe they can walk on water," Thompson joked.He charges for shoes for boots and for a lifetime membership."He gives ya hell on your shoes," lifetime member Jason Kuzov said. "He’s funny and brightens up your day."Claude’s smile began to fade as people started to work from home. A police body-camera recording released Wednesday shed more light on the house party that earned six Miami University students citations for violating COVID-19 health orders over Labor Day weekend.There were 20 people inside the house on Saturday afternoon, when an Oxford police officer arrived to break up the party. In the recording, he approaches a group of young men sitting outside and asks to speak to someone who lives in the house.One steps forward and admits he knows he’s broken the state’s rule against gatherings larger than 10 people.The officer takes his ID, runs it through a police database and discovers that its owner had tested positive for COVID-19.This exchange follows:Officer: I’ve never seen this before. There’s an input on the computer that you tested positive for COVID.Student: Yes.Officer: When was this?Student: This was a week ago.Officer: Are you supposed to be quarantining?Student: Yeah. That’s why I’m at my house.Officer: So you have other people here, and you’re positive for COVID?Student: I mean…Officer: You see the problem? How many other people have COVID?Student: They all do.Officer: Everybody has it?Student: Well, and them — [gestures to house across the street]Officer: And everybody over here has it?Student: Well, I think two.Officer: That’s what we’re trying to prevent, man.Student: I know.Officer: We’re trying to keep this town open.Student: I know. That’s why I’m staying home.Six men who lived in the house were cited, a civil penalty that carries no criminal charge but comes with a 0 fine.Miami University has been the single largest contributor to Butler County’s case count since mid-August, according to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. He and Miami University president Gregory Crawford attribute the school’s cases — 1,084 of them, most diagnosed in the last two weeks — to off-campus house parties exactly like the one recorded over the weekend.Although Miami delayed the start of in-person instruction, Crawford said upperclassmen moved back into town in August and began partying when they got there."Those early weekends in August, we saw an uptick in parties and gatherings,” he said. “I think that’s what is responsible for the surge today.”It’s a surge that is, for now, unique among schools in the Cincinnati area. The University of Cincinnati, a similarly-sized campus, recorded only 147 cases in the last two weeks.Miami has instituted a mandatory testing policy for students, and Crawford on Wednesday announced the school would resume in-person classes starting Sept. 21.A university spokesperson did not respond to questions about whether the students involved in Saturday’s party would be suspended. DENTON, Texas – Get ready for some major closet envy. An impressive collection of clothing, shoes and accessories archives hundreds of years of fashion history. Some even go back 1,000 years. Step inside the 13,000 square foot space and you’ll find endless racks of clothing and accessories packed from floor to ceiling. “These are important parts of fashionista history that need to be preserved,” said Annette Becker, the director of the Texas Fashion Collection at the University of North Texas. The entire collection has been built through donations. “We have pieces that are examples of French couture from the most elite parts of the fashion design world to things that were made on someone's kitchen table by their grandmother,” said Becker. Started in 1938, UNT took custody of the collection in 1972. Since then it has grown to nearly 20,000 garments and accessories including 1,400 pairs of shoes, 2,500 hats and 750 handbags. Becker proudly shows off some of the collection’s most prized possessions. “This is a dress that Audrey Hepburn wore in the final scene of the film Charade and it was donated to us by Hubert de Givenchy who designed most of Audrey Hepburn's clothing for film,” she said. “We have a wide variety of examples from throughout fashion history in our collection and the oldest piece we have is a pre-Colombian textile fragment that's around 1,000 years old. We have to keep this really carefully stored in this acid free cardboard,” she explains. The piece was woven before synthetic dyes were even created. “So that red color really meant power and status,” said Becker. Today, the archive that spans primarily over 250 years is a valuable historical resource for researchers and students. But right now, it’s only available to visiting designers and research students. The ultimate goal is to document everything in the collection and make it accessible to anyone around the world. “Whether that's 8-year-olds who are thinking about a future career in fashion design to fashion curator curators from Paris who have come to our collection to do research,” said Becker. That means having every single item photographed and digitized so that anyone can see the collection online. Megan DeSoto, an Adjunct Photography Instructor at UNT, is spearheading the effort. “We're taking a lot of time to make these really high-resolution well-made photographs so that they're only handled once photographed once and then taken back to where they're being preserved,” said DeSoto. It’s a unique repository that Becker says will preserve centuries of fashion for generations to come.“Often in the world of fashion we think about these really elite designers and people walking the runways in Paris but really clothing is an art form that's in our everyday lives.” 2800
