Watch out, Amazon and Walmart. Kroger is making a big move in the online grocery fight.America's largest grocery chain launched "Kroger Ship," a direct home delivery service, in four cities on Wednesday: Cincinnati, Houston, Louisville, and Nashville. It will expand to new markets in the coming months.Kroger already offers delivery from 1,200 of its stores through third-parties like Instacart and curbside pickup at 1,250. Both are valuable tools to help Kroger offer current and potential customers convenience and keep pace with rivals.Related: Kroger's online sales up 66%. Amazon and Walmart have a real competitorBut Ship new will give the company a new weapon as more shoppers order groceries online and legacy brick-and-mortar retailers Walmart and Target build up their digital capabilities to compete with Amazon. Amazon's Whole Foods acquisition last year blurred the lines between online and offline food retail."Kroger has now returned the favor," said Bill Bishop, the co-founder of grocery retail consulting firm Brick Meets Click."This move expands Kroger's online market potential since it gives Kroger a way to serve customers who don't have convenient access to their stores," he added.Kroger's delivery website went live on Wednesday, and shoppers can pick from more than 50,000 grocery, household, beauty, and pet food choices. The company is focusing on its private label collection with Ship by offering more than 4,500 of its own brands. These sales are valuable for Kroger since they come with higher profit margins, helping offset expensive online shipping costs. For example, Kroger is offering Bromley's for Men, a new shave line the company introduced last week.Kroger is offering free shipping on purchases above , but orders below will come with a .99 delivery fee. During the launch phase, the company is offering shoppers free shipping and 15% off their orders using a promo code.Ship also features an order-and-save subscription, which Kroger believes can help convince customers to make repeat purchases.Online purchases will be fulfilled directly from Kroger's two current fulfillment centers and a third one opening in the fall. The company is working with FedEx and the Postal Service to ship orders, which can be delivered as soon as the next day. 2299

Weeks ago, it was thought that the US was on its way to reopening the economy with the coronavirus no longer posing the threat to the nation it once did.And then increases of testing have shown in recent weeks the virus is not only more prevalent than previously thought, but is spreading at a faster rate.Last Friday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the states bars to close. Fellow Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida made a similar announcement, prohibiting on-site alcohol consumption at bars.Come Monday, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey also closed bars in his state. The sudden reversal came out of necessity as all three states are concerned that hospitals could be overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients. So what makes bars uniquely dangerous?Bars are largely places meant for extended social interaction. That has led to several recent outbreaks of the virus. For instance, there were at least 100 reported cases tied to an outbreak in the Tigerland nightlife district in Louisiana. A group of 16 friends all tested positive for the virus after a visit to a bar, according to local reports."It seems like the largest growing sector of cases in the United States seems to be in the 18 to 40 year old range," Zach Jenkins, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Cedarville University. "Bars also seem to be a common source that infections are springing from. In my estimation, what we're seeing is the direct result of lockdowns easing up. Bars were physically closed throughout the country, people had minimal to no access to alcohol, and many people canceled their vacation plans. "Bars are often social experiences by nature, and younger crowds are more likely to frequent them. When alcohol consumption is added to the mix, people are less likely to keep their distance or practice other behaviors that limit the spread of the virus. Another layer to consider is that many bars lack outdoor seating in larger cities may have limited outdoor seating. Add all of that together, and you start to see why bars seem to be such a hot spot for activity."The CDC still encourages people to remain six feet apart and wear masks in public settings, which could be a challenge consuming alcohol while in a crowded bar.The CDC has released guidelines for the public to decide on whether it's safe to visit places such as bars and restaurants. Those guidelines can be viewed here.In DeSantis’ opinion, people were not following guidelines.“So folks just follow the guidelines, we're in good shape,” DeSantis said. “If you depart from that, then it becomes problematic. So I think that that's been clear from the beginning. Remember, the beginning of May, we went to this, you didn't see any problems. Very good, solid May, beginning of June, but now you've started to see more, but part of that is less business than it is social interactions." 2846

WATCH REPLAYOne day after announcing his running mate, presumptive Democratic Party presidential nominee Joe Biden appeared alongside Sen. Kamala Harris for the first time since Tuesday’s announcement. The US senator from California ran against Biden among a field of candidates vying for the Democratic presidential nomination. While President Donald Trump said that Harris was “nasty” toward Biden during her presidential campaign, Biden came to Harris’ defense from Trump’s attacks."Is anyone surprised Donald Trump has a problem with strong women?” Biden said.Harris also fired back at the president, this time taking aim on his response to the coronavirus pandemic.“At the president's mismanagement of the pandemic has plunged us into the worst economic crisis since the great depression, and we are experiencing a moral reckoning with racism and systemic injustice that has brought a new coalition of conscience to the streets of our country demanding change,” Harris said. “America is crying out for leadership, yet we have a president who cares more about himself than the people who elected him, a president who is making every challenge we face even more difficult to solve, but here is the good news. We do not have to accept the failed government of Donald Trump and Mike Pence.”Trump's response Wednesday evening?"I was surprised he picked her because of the horrible way she spoke about him, and frankly because she dropped like a rock," he said.Biden reflected on his time as President Barack Obama’s running mate and vice president, and how it guided him toward choosing Harris."When I agreed to serve as President Obama's running mate, he asked me a number of questions, as I've asked Kamala, but the most important one, he said to me, what -- he asked me what I wanted, most importantly,” Biden said. “I told him I wanted to be the last person in the room before he made the important decisions. That's what I asked Kamala. I asked Kamala to be the last voice in the room. To always tell me the truth, and she will. Challenge my assumptions if she disagrees. Ask the hard questions. Because that's the way we make the best decisions for the American people."Harris said she had a strong personal connection through Biden’s son Beau, who died in 2015 from brain cancer. The two formed a bond as they both served as state attorneys general."I learned quickly that Beau was the kind of guy who inspired people to be a better version of themselves,” Harris said. “He really was the best of us. And when I would ask him, where did you get that? Where did this come from? He'd always talk about his dad." 2624

We have all been there. You go through the drive thru at McDonald's only to find out that the ice cream machine is down, and the restaurant is unable to sell milkshakes and cones. What if you could find out before driving to the restaurant if the ice cream machine is working? There is an app for it. The app is called "Ice Check," and the app is available for iPhone users. The application relies on users self-reporting on the status of ice cream machines. "Ice Check is the app for McDonald’s ice cream lovers who are sick and tired of hearing the “machine is down!” Our real-time updates will save you time and energy, leading you to ice cream machines that actually work BEFORE you get on line to order," the app's description says. The app is free and available in the App Store.  824
