LOS ANGELES, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Fisker Automotive, a Southern California electric car maker, announced on Thursday that it has signed a pact with BMW regarding the supply of engines and other related components for future models in a major tieup.The Anaheim, Orange County-based U.S. car maker will get a four-cylinder turbocharged engine, totalling 100,000 units every year, for its next generation of cars under a project code-named "Project Nina," the company said.The production of the model, a mass-market plug-in hybrid sedan, will begin at the end of 2012 and the sale is slated for 2013."The BMW engine was an obvious choice for us, as BMW is known for producing the best and most fuel efficient gasoline engines in the world," Fisker's CEO and Executive Design Director Henrik Fisker said. "We are very pleased to have signed this agreement with BMW."The firm did not disclose the terms.The U.S. automaker, founded in 2007, has produced electric vehicles with extended range (EVer). The first derivative of "Project Nina" will be a mid-sized premium sedan which utilizes the technology.The company's other products include Fisker Karma Sedan, a luxury sports car and the world's first premium electric plug-in hybrid.
SAN FRANCISCO, June 15 (Xinhua) -- As social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter grow worldwide, more Internet retailers are beefing up their efforts to add social twists to their business, trying to define the idea of "social commerce" and capitalize the opportunity.On Wednesday, online auction giant eBay revealed some of the social features it is planning to launch later this year, while Copious, a San Francisco-based startup, launched its online social commerce marketplace with a slogan of "buying from and selling to people, not strangers."Copious asks users to log in through their Facebook accounts and allows buyers and sellers to see if they have friends in common in their social networking sites. Buyers can see more information about a seller and also see whether anyone in their networks has purchased, shared or commented on an item from a specific seller, rather than anonymity or simple profiles on sites like eBay and Craigslist.As for sellers, Copious has a social pricing mechanism that enables a seller to offer buyers discounts for sharing listings on Facebook and for following the seller on Copious.Jonathan Ehrlich, Copious co-founder and former Facebook head of marketing, told technology blog TechCrunch that the site is centralized around using social data as a signal to help users understand and trust other parties.According to Copious, the startup founded in January 2011 has raised two million U.S. dollars in funding from Foundation Capital, Google Ventures, Blackberry Partners Fund and a number of Silicon Valley angel investors.Also on Wednesday, Christopher Payne, vice president and head of eBay North America, delivered a keynote speech at the Internet Retailer Conference and Exhibition 2011 in San Diego, revealing some features eBay is launching during the social trend.One feature will enable users to log in their Facebook account on eBay's homepage to get product recommendations based on one's purchasing history and things they have "liked" on their Facebook page. Oodle, the exclusive provider of classified ads on the Facebook Marketplace, rolled out a series of social features last December to make more money from social classifieds.In February, Payvment Inc. launched a Facebook Mall, where consumers can shop for more than 1.2 million products among 60,000 retailers in a single shopping cart.Yardsellr, which is often called "an eBay for Facebook," allows sellers to list items at fixed prices in different categories called "blocks," such as jewelry and purses. BERLIN, June 8 (Xinhua) -- German health minister Daniel Bahr expressed cautious hope Wednesday for an end to the wave of E. coli infections as authorities reported two more deaths and more than 300 new cases."I can't give an all-clear, but after the analysis of the latest data we have reasons for hope, as the number of new infections is continuously dropping," Bahr told local public television ARD before an emergency meeting in Berlin with European Union Health Commissioner John Dalli."Unfortunately, there will be new cases and more deaths have to be expected, but overall new infections are clearly going down," he said.On the same day, Germany's national disease control center, the Robert Koch Institute, said the number of reported cases in Germany had risen by more than 300 to 2,648. Nearly 700 of those affected have been taken to hospital with a serious complication that can cause kidney failure.The Institute did not fully support Bahr's optimism. It said there was a declining trend in new cases but added it was not clear whether this was because the outbreak was truly waning or because consumers were staying away from the raw vegetables believed to be the source of the E. coli.The German government has faced increasing criticism from abroad and at home over its dealing with the crisis. It was twice wrong in naming the source of the outbreak and it has been criticized for a lack of coordination between research institutes.Dalli was quoted by local daily Die Welt as saying, "we have to rely on the experience and expertise across Europe, and even outside Europe."The Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin also called for a federal government representative to coordinate the various government agencies dealing with the disease to eliminate mixed messages.
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft's cloud-based software Microsoft Office 365 on Wednesday experienced its first major outage since its introduction in late June."At approximately 11:30 a.m. PDT, Microsoft became aware of a networking issue affecting customers of some Microsoft services hosted out of one of our North American data centers," said Steven Gerri, general manager for Microsoft Global Foundation Services, in a statement"We apologize for the inconvenience that Office 365 outage has caused today. We are working on resolving the issue," the software giant said via Twitter.Outages were reported in Chicago, Denver and New York City among other locations. According to tweets from affected users, they were unable to access their email and managers were unable to manage accounts.The outage lasted approximately five hours and services have been restored for the moment.According to Microsoft service-level agreement, Microsoft guarantees a 99.9 percent level of uptime. If it fails to reach 99.9 percent uptime, users are eligible for 25 percent service credit.As more industry giants try to entice users to move to the "cloud," a term refers to the management and provision of applications and data over the Internet, the downtime again reminds cloud computing users that they must prepare to deal with outages and rethink their dependency on the service, analysts said.Amazon has suffered two major cloud outages earlier this month and back in April, impacting some of its high-profile users like movie streaming service Netflix and location-based social networking Foursquare.Analysts recommend cloud users to store data with multiple service providers to minimize the risk and limit their dependency on cloud services for business-critical processes.Available in 40 countries and regions since June 28, Office 365, which Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said is "where Microsoft office meets the cloud," combines Microsoft Office, SharePoint Online, Exchange Online and Lync Online into a single cloud-based package for business users.
