TORONTO (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is quarantining himself at home after his wife exhibited flu-like symptoms. Trudeau's office said Thursday that Sophie Grégoire Trudeau returned from a speaking engagement in Britain and had mild flu-like symptoms, including a low fever late, Wednesday night. She is being tested for the COVID-19 disease and is awaiting results. “She is self-isolating at home awaiting test results, and her symptoms have since subsided,” a statement from the PM’s office says.According to the statement, a doctor has advised the PM to continue daily activities while self-monitoring, given that he has no symptoms himself. “Out of an abundance of caution, the Prime Minister is opting to self-isolate and work from home until receiving Sophie's results," wrote Trudeau’s office. 829

The US Department of Veterans Affairs is investigating 11 suspicious deaths at a medical center in West Virginia, according to a statement from Sen. Joe Manchin's office. The VA said it is looking into "potential wrongdoing" at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg. It would not provide details.Manchin, a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, said a "person of interest" is no longer in contact with patients at the facility. He said at least one of the deaths is a confirmed homicide.Wesley R. Walls, a spokesman for the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, said "allegations of potential misconduct you may have heard about in media reports do not involve" any current employees."Immediately upon discovering these serious allegations, Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center leadership brought them to the attention of the VA's inspector general while putting safeguards in place to ensure the safety of each and every one of our patients," Walls said.In his statement, Manchin said he met with VA and hospital leaders to ensure a thorough investigation."These crimes shock the conscience and I'm still appalled they were not only committed but that our Veterans, who have sacrificed so much for our country, were the victims," the senator said.Veteran was injected with 'fatal dose of insulin,' family saysIn a claim filed last week, the family of Felix Kirk McDermott, a patient who died at the hospital, alleged he was "injected with a fatal dose of insulin, either negligently or willfully, by an unidentified person" while he was a patient at the center. The 82-year-old Army veteran did not suffer from diabetes and had never been diagnosed with the disease either, the claim states. McDermott died in April 2018."I thought my dad was safe there," his daughter, Melanie Proctor, told 1829

The University of Florida's band director says he was attacked Saturday night after the school's football game against the University of Miami in Orlando. The band was marching in uniform from the stadium to its buses following the game when a female Miami fan tried to cross the line of band students, University of Florida spokesman Steve Orlando told CNN, based on the director's account. That's when the band director, Jay Watkins, said he put his arm out to stop her and when he did, another person grabbed him from behind in a choke hold and threw him to the pavement, Orlando said."Jay suffered bumps and scrapes to his head and elbow," Orlando said. The director was doing "OK" Sunday, the spokesman added. No students were injured and a report has been filed with the Orlando Police Department, Orlando said, but no arrests have been made.Orlando police told CNN affiliate 890

Thousands of pro-gun rights activists converged around the Virginia Capitol on Monday to voice opposition to gun control legislation proposed by the Democratic-held legislature.Among the vocal critics of the bills were members of law enforcement, who used their official office to advocate against some of the proposals. The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page its support for the protest. The sheriff’s office also posted photos of deputies in uniform holding a sign saying, “we support the second amendment.”“Great turnout for 2A rally in Richmond today! Standing room only!!” the post read. Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins also attended the rally to show his support. He said he would deputize gun owners if Virginia lawmakers move forward with gun legislation. It is unclear if said deputies would have arrest power.“My intent was to swear in thousands of auxiliary deputy sheriffs and make it legal for them to possess the weapons that they're trying to ban and restrict,” Jenkins said. Dozens of sheriffs in Virginia have stated that their departments would not enforce gun laws they feel are unconstitutional. Jenkins suggested, but would not directly answer, whether his department would enforce state laws involving gun control if Democrats move forward with legislation.“I'll have to make a determination if these laws they pass or a violation of that,” Jenkins said. Although thousands gathered in Richmond to protest gun legislation, Gov. Ralph Northam said there was a reason why Democrats were elected in Virginia. In his State of the Commonwealth address earlier this week, Northam referenced the legislature’s response to a mass shooting at a Virginia Beach municipal complex last year as a reason why Democrats gained a majority in the Virginia House for the first time in nearly three decades. “Virginians watched. They saw what happened, and they were appalled. So they changed the legislature. And here we are,” Northam said. While a bill to ban assault weapons was dropped earlier last week, other bills are still being considered. One is limiting the purchases of firearms to one a month.Earlier this month, Northam signed legislation to prohibit firearms inside of the Capitol building and an adjacent legislative office building. Another one of the more controversial bills is a so called “red flag” law, which would allow for law enforcement to take away firearms from gun owners who are considered a danger to themselves or others. Northam defended this legislation as “constitutional.” “If you have demonstrated extreme risk of violence, or there’s a protective order against you, you shouldn’t have a firearm. This means universal background checks. If there’s nothing in your record, you have nothing to worry about,” the governor said. Jenkins isn’t convinced. “Right now, it's hard to say that we're going to disarm our citizens who often have a 10- or 15-minute response time in rural areas for an officer to arrive and say we're going to disarm the homeowner and restrict their rights to defend themselves,” the sheriff said.
