TIANJIN, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations' chief climate change negotiator applauded China on Monday for its efforts in dealing with the challenge of climate change, saying she was impressed by the determination of the Chinese people and their government.Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC), made the remarks in China's northern city of Tianjin at a welcoming reception held by the Chinese government.A new round of UN climate talks is being held in the port city on Oct. 4-9 in preparation for the year-end Cancun summit in Mexico."Here in Tianjin, I have seen much evidence of determination," said Figueres."(I saw the) determination of the government of China to reduce their CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by up to 45 percent by 2020, (and the) determination of the people of China to turn China into the world's leader in renewable energy technology and to find a visionary balance among economic development, poverty eradication and climate protection."Figueres also praised the host city, saying, "(I saw the) determination of the government of Tianjin, China's fourth-largest city, to be a model city for the circular economy, a pilot city for low-carbon growth and an exemplary city for sustainable development.""A striking example is the Tianjin Eco-City project between Singapore and China and with significant private sector investment, which will provide eco-friendly housing for some 350,000 people," she added.More than 3,000 delegates from 177 parties and observer states and over 200 non-governmental organizations are attending the Tianjin gathering, the final one prior to the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Cancun at the end of this year.Figueres concluded her speech at the reception with a Chinese proverb, "Zhong Zhi Cheng Cheng," which means "With everyone's determination, we can do anything." She also urged all the participants to make concerted efforts to reach a consensus during the climate talks.  

ATHENS, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Senior Chinese legislator Chen Zhili on Saturday called for the promotion of gender equality through education.Since the Fourth World Conference on Women, society has become more aware that the empowerment of women and the improvement of their status is critical to economic, political and social development, Chen said during a keynote speech at the UNESCO forum on gender equality in Athens.Chen, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China has witnessed great improvement in the status of women in recent years.With the implementation of the Women Protection Law as well as other national policies on gender equality, the rights of Chinese women in the area of education, work and politics are guaranteed, Chen said.Chen also spoke highly of the efforts made by UNESCO to promote sustainable development through gender equality.During her speech, Chen made several proposals to promote gender equality. The proposals included creating a stronger voice for gender equality that should be heard by all people, especially male decision makers, she said. Women should be encouraged, she said, to gain the spirit of self-esteem, self-confidence and self-reliance.Chen also urged countries around the world to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in policy-making regarding gender equality.

WUHAN, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Monday urged medical authorities to increase prevention and control measures against schistosomiasis, as lingering rainfall and massive floods in the country's south have increased outbreaks of the disease.Priority should be given to upgrading the capacity of grass-roots level medical institutions in disease prevention and control, he said, adding medical authorities should distribute free medicine to prevent contracting the disease as well as treating patients as early as possible.He further said medical costs should be reduced or exempted for the poor and efforts should be made to raise people's awareness in disease prevention and control.Schistosomiasis, a wasting disease that causes blood loss and tissue damage, afflicted many Chinese before the 1960s due to widespread below-standard waste treatment in rural latrines, fishing boats and water.People who work or play in areas where the water contains freshwater snails are especially prone to be affected by the water-borne parasitic worm disease, commonly known as snail fever.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday expressed its hope that East Asian cooperation would deepen through the upcoming series of leaders' meetings in Hanoi, Vietnam."China attaches importance to and actively takes part in East Asian cooperation. In the series of meetings, China will review with other countries the cooperation that has been carried out and discuss how to further promote the integration process of East Asian cooperation," said Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue.Hu made the remarks at a press conference Thursday afternoon in which officials from the ministries of Commerce, Education and Finance briefed the press on Premier Wen Jiabao's scheduled attendance at the meetings.The meetings, lasting from Oct. 28 to 30, will include: the 13th summit between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) (10+1); the 13th summit between ASEAN, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) (10+3); and the fifth East Asia Summit.Wen will also attend a meeting with the leaders of Japan and the ROK.Hu said China hopes the meetings would promote good-neighborliness and boost cooperation between China and the other Asian countries."During his visit, Premier Wen, together with participating leaders of other countries, will review the achievements of China-ASEAN cooperation, 10+3 cooperation, and East Asian cooperation, as well as cooperation concerning East Asia Summit. BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) - Members from friendship associations of China and Japan on Friday voiced their hope for people-to-people exchanges to help improve strained China-Japan relations after recent disputes.The proposal was launched at a conference held in the Great Hall of the People to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Japan-China Friendship Association (JCFA), a friendly group established on Oct. 1, 1950 with the view to promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between the two peoples and promote bilateral exchanges and trade."Friendly groups should take the 60th anniversary as a new starting point to deepen friendly exchanges between the two countries, especially between the youth, and contribute to the China-Japan strategic relationship of reciprocity," said President of the China-Japan Friendship Association (CJFA) Song Jian. He also spoke highly of the contribution made by the JCFA for the development of China-Japan relations.People-to-people exchanges have always played an important role in the history of bilateral relations. It not only helped the two countries normalize ties but also improve the bilateral relations when they were strained by some issues such as the visits paid by former Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro to the Yasukuni Shrine.Regarding the recent friction between the two countries caused by a ship collision, people-to-people exchanges were expected to play a role again.Two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided on Sept. 7 in the waters off the Diaoyu Islands. Japan's subsequent illegal detention of the Chinese trawler and crew members resulted in strong protests from the Chinese government and public. China then halted bilateral exchanges at and above provincial and ministerial levels. The crew and the boat were released after the Chinese side took some countermeasures."China and Japan are neighboring countries separated by only a thin strip of water. People of the two countries boast a 2000-year history of friendly exchanges. The good-neighboring relationship between China and Japan is not only in the fundamental interests of the two peoples, but also conducive to the peace, stability and prosperity of the region and the world at large," Song said.He added that the history of the 20th century proved that it is in the fundamental interests of the two peoples to maintain peaceful coexistence, friendship lasting for generations, reciprocal cooperation and common development."It is a long-term and hard task to promote the development of the China-Japan friendship, and it needs the efforts from both sides," Song said.For his part, JCFA's vice chairman Shoichi Ide also pledged to make efforts to deepen mutual understanding between the two countries.Japan and China are facing a new situation to further deepen the bilateral strategic relations.
