But the impact on our blood pressure and cholesterol is just as important.Just ask a young woman who's survived not one, but two heart attacks. She talks about overcoming the odds, and how a heart-healthy diet is helping her fight back.In a small room, it's dinner time. But it's more than a love of food that's bringing these people together. It's a love and appreciation for life."So my name is Michelle," says one woman seated at the table. "I've had two heart attacks."Michelle Melvin and everyone at the table has had at least one close call with their hearts."What did you think when the doctor told you you'd had a heart attack?" The NOW's Kumasi Aaron asked Melvin. "It was disbelief," she responded.Melvin was 41, active and healthy overall when she felt a pain in her temples and her forearms went numb."But, did I ever think heart attack?" Melvin recalls. "No. I was 41 years old. That doesn't happen happen when you're 41." Her first thoughts? Her 8 and 10 year old sons.Melvin says, "It was just more of that sacredness of I can't, I can't die. With these babies at home still."She changed her diet and lifestyle but five years later, she had another heart attack."It wasn't supposed to happen again you know?" Melvin says. "You're not supposed to get it twice."Doctors diagnosed her with SCAD, a rare heart disease that mostly affects young women."The patients that it affects frequently are super healthy patients," says Kasier Permanente Cardiac Registered Nurse Amanda Bloom. "These are women who are out there doing marathons, they really take good care of themselves that's kind of what's so scary about it."Bloom started the support group. She wanted to make healthy eating a big part of it, because of its impact."It can really greatly reduce your risk of having another heart incident," Bloom says. "And for someone who hasn't had one it really reduces the risk of ever having one."Bloom prepares the dishes herself. Kale apple and pecan salad, and butternut squash and lentil soup. When it comes to eating heart healthy, Bloom says fruits, dark leafy greens and vegetables are key.For Melvin, the guidance she gets from Bloom about eating heart healthy is giving her important confidence."It kind of like jump starts," Melvin says. "It's like okay I can do this. Drizzle with one teaspoon of olive oil. Massage kale for a couple minutes to tenderize.Sprinkle a little lemon juice over apples to keep them from browning.Mix together kale, apple, pecans, and cranberries.Toss with dressing and serve. When it comes to saving lives, seconds count. And now, thanks to improving technology, drones are proving to be a game changer in an emergency.Dozens of people’s lives were saved last year with the help of drones, according to drone maker DJI.  The company said from May of 2017 to April of 2018, 65 people were rescued with the help of a drone. DJI reviewed media reports to come up with that number and included documentation in its recent report released this year.Firefighters, search and rescue teams and other members of law enforcement are using drones to survey an area much faster from the air than people can on the ground.“During a search and rescue operation we can see body temperature, Romeo Durscher, DJI’s Public Safety Integration Director, said.Drones carry more than simple cameras. They are now built to send back infrared images.Aeryon Defense USA, of Denver, has drones that can carry upwards of four pounds of payload. The company sells drones that can be used by police agencies and the military."That allows you to hook in a medical kit, radio, food, water (or) ammunition to provide life sustaining equipment," said Mark Holden of Aeryon Defense USA. “We can carry water, enough for one day, food, even ammunition resupplies and some explosives as well.”The company’s drones can also be programed to single out a person moving in the camera’s view, but ignore a tree blowing in the wind or wildlife.“This is just the beginning. Everything we do is about taking the load off the end user. She had wandered into a nearby field. Drones dropped a life preserver to flood victims in Sichuan, China before rescue crews arrived to save the victims. WESTLAKE, La. -- A fire broke out at a chemical plant in Westlake, Louisiana, as Hurricane Laura moved out of the state. Louisiana State Police responded to the scene Thursday and motorists were being advised not to travel on I-10 through Westlake as crews fought to put out the flames.State police say the fire involved a chlorine leak that originated from a BioLab chemical manufacturing facility.The BioLab plant was built in 1979 and manufactures trichloroisocyanuric acid, chlorinating granules and other chemicals used in such household cleaners as Comet bleach scrub and pool chlorine powder, The Associated Press reports. Trichloroisocyanuric acid and chlorine are potentially acutely toxic to people and animals if ingested or inhaled.As a result of the fire, residents in the Westlake, Moss Bluff and Sulphur area were advised to shelter in place until further notice, close their doors and windows, and turn off their air conditioning units.In a statement obtained by KATC, KIK Custom Products said the fire at their facility was the result of damage from the hurricane and a specialized team has been deployed to mitigate the impact of the incident. 1171

White House officials and House Democrats said Friday they’re no closer to a deal with on a stimulus package, a week after extended unemployment benefits expired.While the White House said they believe a compromise can be made on some issues, the two sides remain far apart on funding state and local governments. Many states and municipalities are struggling due to decreased revenues and increased costs amid the pandemic.There is also disagreement among the parties, including Senate Republicans, on unemployment supplements as unemployment figures remain over 10%. From April into July, unemployed workers received an additional 0 unemployment supplement on top of standard unemployment benefits. But many Republicans grumbled that the supplement gave incentive for workers to stay home amid the pandemic.Generally, however, if an employer calls an employee back to work, they're no longer eligible for unemployment benefits.Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told reporters on Capitol Hill Friday that he is going to recommend executive orders addressing student loan payments, evictions and unemployment supplements. Currently, federal student loan payments are frozen into October. Also, protection ended last week on evictions.President Donald Trump told reporters late Friday that he plans on signing the order "by the end of the week." But Trump said he expects there will be legal challenges to his order. Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said that there is broad agreement on some issues, such as funding for schools to safely operate amid the pandemic.
