SAN MARCOS (KGTV) -- Since CSU San Marcos student Adrianne McWilliams was young, the service was always near and dear to her heart."My dad was active duty for 20 years, so the first few years of my life I moved around a lot. When I was in elementary school, my mom started working for the Marine Corps," McWilliams said.When she found out that those coming home from deployment wouldn't get the staple celebration she remembered as a child, McWilliams wanted to take matters into her own hands."It just kind of made me think about how when I was really young and my dad was deployed, whenever he came back there was always that big homecoming moment," McWilliams told 10News.She created thank you and care packages for those returning home from duty."I'm doing everything I can to make sure that there's at least a little handwritten note on it that says 'welcome home' and 'thank you for your service' so at least they get that little bit of homecoming that they'd get if this were under usual circumstances," McWilliams added.She included basic essentials like toiletries and snacks, something she said they could use since many of them have to self quarantine for two weeks before reuniting with family."Our Marines that are coming home do deserve a special homecoming. Coming home after a long deployment then having to quarantine is not an ideal situation," said McWilliams.McWilliams gathered gifts and donations thanks to friends, family and community members, all from word of mouth and social media. Her first batch was given to 35 returning members."I've always liked giving back but when it's something I'm passionate about and have a personal connection to, the motivation is a little stronger and it's something that hits closer to home," she said.On June 2, 50 packages will be given to another group of returning members. SANTEE, Calif (KGTV) - Edgemore Hospital celebrated the 10th Anniversary of its current facility Wednesday, a milestone in a dramatic turnaround from a reputation that almost led to its closure."You had a hospital that as basically built in the 1920's," County Supervisor Dianne Jacob said in an interview with 10News. "You had a hospital that at times had no air conditioning on days where it was 100 degrees...required a lot of maintenance, held together with bubble gum and baling wire, basically.""It was like a rundown hotel with open windows and animals running around," said patient Glenn Higgins, who spent two years in the old facility. "The nurses were scared to go to certain areas because they said there were ghosts from a lot of people dying."Costs of renovation or replacement were so steep, the County Board of Supervisors almost decided to close Edgemoor and not replace it. However, after being on the verge of making that decision, the Board instead relented and approved the 9 million to build the current facility in Santee.Higgins says that while Edgemoor always had a great staff, the new building has made a big difference in the quality of care. (KGTV) - Border Patrol officials in San Diego say they are preparing for the possibility of interactions with 7,000 immigrants seeking asylum at the U.S-Mexico border in San Ysidro.Mexico has already offered asylum to the migrant caravan, officials say. If the group reaches Tijuana, they will be denied entry into the United States.1,300 U.S. military troops are at San Ysidro to support the border mission, but not in a law enforcement role, according to military officials.The Army, Marines, and military police will fill in gaps along the border and erect barriers, creating an infrastructure to make it harder to cross illegally.Border protection officials also told 10News there is no place to put the migrants. During a tour of the San Ysidro Port of Entry Friday, journalists were allowed to tour the holding area but forbidden to take photographs. ICE detention facilities are already at capacity, officials say, and any more additions would push the problem to the breaking point.Anyone who enters the U.S. illegally will be arrested, Border Patrol officials say."We are not going to allow large groups of aliens to come to this county and to enter this country unaddressed,” said Rodney Scott, U.S. Customs and Border Protection.Scott added that if the caravan does visit the U.S., nothing is off the table in terms of stopping them, including a full border shutdown.The military says it views its mission at the border as temporary, and says it plans to be gone by December 15. 1516

SAN FRANCISCO (KGTV) – The first case of coronavirus with unknown origin has been confirmed in Northern California. The resident hasn’t traveled overseas since the outbreak began, the CDC said Wednesday. It’s unknown how the patient got the virus. "At this time, the patient's exposure is unknown. It's possible this could be an instance of community spread of COVID-19, which would be the first time this has happened in the United States. Community spread means spread of an illness for which the source of infection is unknown," the agency said in a statement. The CDC says it’s working with the state and preparing for “possible community transmission.” The public health system in Northern California was able to catch the case.
