A multistate outbreak of listeria has been traced to a Houston manufacturer's Vietnamese ready-to-eat pork products, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this week. Long Phung Food Products has issued a recall of its ready-to-eat pork products, which were shipped nationwide.Four people were hospitalized after eating Long Phung anchovy-marinated pork patty rolls manufactured between May 21 and November 16 and labeled with establishment number "EST. 13561." No deaths have been reported.Listeria is the third leading cause of death from food poisoning in the United States, according to the CDC, and is especially dangerous for anyone with a weakened immune system, over age 65 or pregnant. Symptoms usually occur within four weeks of infection but can take as long as 70 days to appear. In some cases, the first signs of infection are diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. Typical symptoms that follow include headache, stiff neck, fever, muscle pain, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.Pregnant women are especially at risk. According to the CDC, they are 10 times more likely to get a listeria infection, and the odds are even higher for Hispanic pregnant women, who are 24 times more likely to get listeria.Although pregnant women typically experience only flu-like symptoms, the danger to the developing fetus is high. Infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery or stillbirth.Newborns with listeriosis can develop blood infections, meningitis and other serious and potentially life-threatening complications. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. The illness has affected people in Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee and Michigan, but the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said it is concerned that families and businesses may have stored frozen products. The full list can be found on its website. The CDC advises consumers and retailers to throw away or return unused products to the place of purchase, even if they have been consumed without any sign of illness. Shelves and drawers where the pork patties were storied should be washed with warm, soapy water and sanitized. 2184

A New Jersey man who died of a brain-eating infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis was exposed while visiting the BSR Cable Park and Surf Resort in Waco, Texas, during the summer, the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District said Friday.Water samples taken by local, state and federal health officials at the beginning of the month "found evidence of Naegleria fowleri," the amoeba that causes the infection, according to the health district.Fabrizio Stabile, 29, visited the surf resort before developing symptoms in September.A GoFundMe page launched by those close to him said he was mowing his lawn when he developed a severe headache. It hadn't gone away by the following morning, and his symptoms progressed until he was unable to speak coherently or get out of bed. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors found the amoeba in his spinal fluid. "The worst-case scenario was unfolding in front of our eyes," the site says. The health department concluded, "epidemiologic and environmental assessment indicate that exposure likely occurred at this facility."Although the amoeba itself was not found in water samples from the park, "the presence of fecal indicator organisms, high turbidity, low free chlorine levels, and other ameba that occur along with N. fowleri indicate conditions favorable for N. fowleri growth."The tests were taken from the park's Surf Resort, Royal Flush and Lazy River features. Those areas are to remain closed until "all health and safety issues have been addressed and mitigated appropriately," the health department said, adding that the owner of the park is cooperating and working to develop a "comprehensive water quality management plan to include current regulatory requirements."The BSR Cable Park said on its website that it is installing a state-of-the-art filtration system on the three features to ensure that they are "as clear and clean as humanly possible."However, the park is interpreting the test results another way: "Water tests come back clean," the website proclaimed, adding that "comprehensive test results have now confirmed that the water at BSR Surf Resort meets every standard for safety."BSR also offered its condolences: "On behalf of the entire staff at BSR Surf Resort, our hearts and prayers are with Fab Stabile's family, friends, and the New Jersey surf community. A precious life has been lost, and we are deeply saddened for his loved ones."There have been nine cases of primary amebic meningoencephalitis in Texas since 2005, according to the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District. Centers and Disease Control and Prevention data dating to the 1960s show between zero and eight cases per year nationwide, with five cases in 2016, none last year and no other cases reported this year. The amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, is found in warm bodies of fresh water such as lakes and hot springs. It infects people by entering the nose and making its way to the brain. There, it can cause a brain infection that the CDC calls "rare and devastating," known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis. It is almost always fatal, though a handful of people have survived.Health officials recommend keeping water out of your nose while swimming in warm or untreated freshwater, by either holding your nose, keeping it above water or using a nose clip. 3359

A new report through the Brookings Institute found that COVID-19 is the third leading cause of death for Black Americans.A former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention agrees with that. The Brookings report looks deeper at disparities. It says the mortality rate for Black Americans is more than twice that for Asian or white Americans.“So, only cancer and heart disease will kill more African Americans this year,” said Trevon Logan, a professor of economics at The Ohio State University. “So, things like stroke, diabetes, all of those are taking a back seat to the coronavirus.”Logan is one of the authors of the report, which finds the impact of the pandemic has disproportionately hit Black Americans in terms of health and money. Some of the contributing problems are a lack of access to care, more dense housing making it easier to be exposed to the virus, African Americans are more likely to be front line workers, and they’re more likely to be in low-wage jobs that have led to high levels of unemployment.“We were devasted in the last great recession and were only beginning to come out of that tunnel, that dark tunnel, in the last year,” said Logan. “So, these setbacks that are experienced by the African American community both in terms of health and economically are simply a different, or a magnitude that they are for the population overall.”Logan says the pandemic has exposed the lack of a safety net to get us through times of crisis. He says there needs to be policies to help all who are unemployed, not just race specific. 1573
