A mechanic for American Airlines was arrested Thursday and accused of trying to sabotage a commercial airliner shortly before it was set to take off from Miami International Airport for the Bahamas with 150 people on board.Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani has been charged with "willfully damaging, destroying, disabling, or wrecking an aircraft, and attempting to do so," according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court.Alani allegedly tried to damage or disable the aircraft's air data module (ADM) system, which reports aircraft speed, pitch and other critical data, on July 17.On Thursday, investigators interviewed Alani and he "admitted that he accessed the ADM" and that he "inserted a piece of foam into the ADM's inlet where the line connects and that he applied super glue to the foam so as to prevent the foam from coming off," the complaint says."Alani stated that his intention was not to cause harm to the aircraft or its passengers," investigators say in the complaint. The court documents say Alani told investigators that he was upset over a contract dispute between union workers and the airlines, and the dispute had cost him money.Alani allegedly explained that he tampered with the aircraft so he could get overtime working on the plane. As the plane went down the runway and pilots increased power to the engines, there was an error related to the ADM system and the takeoff was aborted. The aircraft returned to the concourse and no one on board was injured, the complaint says.American Airlines mechanics immediately inspected the aircraft and "discovered a loosely connected pitot tube, which connects directly to the ADM" and determined "the ADM appeared to have been deliberately obstructed with what appeared to be a dark Styrofoam-type material," according to the complaint.Authorities used surveillance video to identify Alani, the document says.American Airlines, in a statement to CNN, said, "At American we have an unwavering commitment to the safety and security of our customers and team members and we are taking this matter very seriously. At the time of the incident, the aircraft was taken out of service, maintenance was performed and after a inspection to ensure it was safe the aircraft was returned to service. American immediately notified federal law enforcement who took over the investigation with our full cooperation."CNN reached out to Alani without success Thursday and is attempting to determine whether he has an attorney. He is scheduled to make an initial appearance in Miami on Friday, said Marlene Ferandez-Karavetsos, a spokeswoman for the US Attorney's office in the Southern District of Florida. 2671

A new face is serving up coffee as a Starbucks barista in the Hyatt Place Boca Raton in Florida. It's the latest promotion for Angie Diaz in her 8 months in hospitality. Diaz moved from Colombia, so she had been learning a new language while also finding a job. She's deaf, which made the transition that much more complicated, learning the signed and written words of her new community. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports only about 19% of people with disabilities are employed in the United States, far less than the general population. "In the past, I really had a lot of struggles and I really had to open myself up to opportunities," Diaz signed.Diaz went through the Disability Services Hospitality Training Program with CareerSource in Palm Beach County. She learned hospitality skills while being given fair access to an interpreter in class. When she was first hired at the hotel, she was provided an interpreter for her training there. "My team members, when they found out I was deaf, they didn't really know how to handle it. They thought maybe it would be really hard to communicate," she signed. General Manager Sharon Ballard said Diaz quickly helped the coworkers adjust. "She's no different from anyone else, it's just the few alterations we have to communicate with her," Ballard said.Ballard said Diaz gave such excellent customer service, she was promoted to the position of a Starbucks Barista. "So she's working a bit one-on-one with the guests, and then hopefully we'll be able to get her at the front desk as well. To just move her up in her career," Ballard said.Hyatt Place Boca Raton has provided a machine that allows Diaz and other employees to basically "text" back and forth quickly on two computers facing each other. Diaz, however, suggests there are many ways to communicate, even if a person hasn't learned sign language yet, including using gestures and facial expressions."I have a really go-getter personality, and I showed them that we can find ways to communicate," she explained.Diaz is a model of success. Four other associates who are deaf have been hired in Hyatt hotels in the area, all from the CareerSource program. "All of this collectively has helped me become who I am. And I feel like I have really established myself as a deaf community member here. And I continue to learn and I feel so proud about that," Diaz explained. The 2394

After massive immigration raid near Morton, Mississippi, the community seems split on the issue.“It’s creating division,” resident Sidney Overby says. “I believe that we do not need to divide the people that are here.”Outside a local Walmart, one woman says she’s happy about the raids. “It’s a good thing to get the illegals out of the country,” says one woman outside a local Walmart. “If you want to come here legally, than by all means do that, but don’t try to come here illegally.”During the immigration raids in Mississippi, 680 arrests were made, which was the largest in a decade on U.S. soil.“Some families don’t know about their families,” says resident Leslyn Cazares. “The kids are crying for their dad and mom.”Cazares says her uncle and aunt are two of the hundreds of people now facing deportation.“Why can people can do that?” she asks about the arrests. “The people don’t do anything. They come here for work for their family.”Many of those taken away by immigration officials worked at the Koch’s Foods Processing plant. “Kids come home and they don’t where they parents and they don’t how they’re going to survive,” says a man who says he’s worked at Koch’s for 13 years. He went on to say these raids have impacted productivity.“Wasn’t nobody at work; the plant was empty,” he says. “Most of the plant is Mexican, and without them being there they overworked a lot of the people, the blacks and the whites.”Black, white, and brown, some say the only color that really matters is green. “It’s like everybody disappeared; it’s like a ghost town,” says grocery store owner Juan Garcia. “You don’t see a lot of people outside.”Garcia says his business is suffering because the raids have taken away many of his customers, and that the ones left are too scared to come out and shop.“I feel pretty bad because the same thing happened about 10 years ago when we were in Laurel,” he says of another city in Mississippi. “It was bad for the business over there and it’s going to bad over here, too.” Garcia recorded cell phone video of the raid, which showed buses used to remove alleged undocumented immigrants from the Koch’s property. Something some people in this small town quietly support.“[I'm] glad they done it,” says a man, who did not want to be identified. “It was a long time overdue. I’m just wondering why they didn’t hit Tyson.”Whether in support or opposed to the raid, those hit the hardest are calling to a higher power. At Saint Martin Mission, the first Sunday service since the raid was dedicated to those affected by the operation.“Some of our church leaders, members of the choir, different ministers were taken by the raids,” Father Roberto Mena says.Father Mena says faith has taken a hit in Morton. So, while preaching from the pulpit, he’s asked those in power to have a compassionate heart for the immigrants. “A lot of the children, they were going to be kept away from their parents and that breaks my heart,” he says. Outside the church, however, some don’t see this as a matter of religion or race, but rather of what is legal and what is illegal. 3103

AMHERST, N.Y. — The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning people to use caution when signing up for so-called "risk-free trials" online. Often, what looks like a free offer has fine print that results in a consumer getting unwanted products which are charged to your debit or credit cards. The internet and social media are filled with "free trial" offers promising you a chance to get a free product for a small shipping charge. However, the BBB found that many times people are not reading the fine print, which can be misleading and says a person is actually subscribing to receive products over time. Some New York victims have lost hundreds of dollars. And the problem is growing. The Federal Trade Commission reported the number of "free trial" complaints nearly doubling from 2015 to 2017.An investigation by the Better Business Bureau found that 72 percent of victims are women because the fraudulent ads often promote skin care products. In addition, the BBB found scammers are falsely claiming celebrities, like Oprah Winfrey and others, are endorsing their products. You can read the BBB investigation 1123
