Authorities say a seventh grader who died by suicide inside a northeast Ohio middle school bathroom last week planned to carry out an attack on the school.According to Jackson Township Police Chief Mark Brink, the Jackson Memorial Middle School student admired the Columbine shooters and had an eight-step plan to carry out an attack.The boy "intended to conduct a school shooting and harm others," Brink said. On Feb. 20, police responded to Jackson Memorial Middle School in Stark County after receiving a call about a student who had shot himself in the boy's bathroom.According to the medical examiner's office, the boy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.Security cameras captured the 13-year-old on video coming out of the restroom with a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle he had brought to school under his clothes. As states across the country grapple with an increase in coronavirus cases and a huge demand for tests, many businesses are looking for other ways to get more mileage out of their supply chain.Like with anything else, supply and demand is a constant struggle. In this unprecedented era, the demand for things like coronavirus tests is so large that public health departments don't have a choice but to figure out ways to make our supplies last. Several states are examining pooled testing. California's Public Health Department says it's to "better leverage testing resources."Pooling is something that blood banks have used for decades to keep their blood supply safe. Dr. Claudia Cohn is the Chief Medical Officer of the AABB, formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks.“If you have 100 people that need to be tested and if you test each of them, you’ll do 100 tests. If you find that your test is sensitive enough that you can pool together 20 samples at the same time, instead of having 100 tests, you can have five pools of 20,” Dr. Cohn said.Now, if one of those five pools is positive, then Dr. Cohn says, "You’ll need to break it out and test each of those separately. So, let’s say you have one positive person in a pool of 100 people, you either do 100 tests and find one positive or you do five pools of 20, four of those pools will be negative, so you’ve done 4 pools and covered 80 people."The test works by taking a tiny sample from each person who was tested.“When you take a swab from everyone’s nose, you isolate the DNA from that swab,” Dr. Cohn said about the PCR test, which is generally a nose swab. “It’s not a lot, it’s a small amount but it’s enough. Because these tests are very, very sensitive.”Those tests are so sensitive, and they have to be, that pooling can really only work if the test can handle, as in detect, multiple samples at once. The FDA mandates that.“The FDA is quite demanding as they should be in terms of making sure tests work well and are safe,” Dr. Cohn said.And Dr. Cohn says, pooling wouldn't work in an area where there's a large outbreak, which means a large number of people would test positive regardless of pooling. In the blood world, this strategy has been perfected.“You are taking 100 samples and taking a drop from each sample and putting it together,” Dr. Cohn said. “You are testing every single person who comes through. In the blood world safety is before everything."Blood banks test for HIV, Hepatitis C and B and well as COVID-19 antibodies, according to the American Red Cross. And, as this pandemic moves through our communities, Dr. Cohn says our blood supply needs to remain strong.“After that initial spike, it went down again and that was okay because elective surgery had been canceled, so the demand for blood had gone down as well so for a while we were at a good balance of demand and supply. But then elective surgeries opened up and hospitals went back to full service and we’re in a shortage again,” Dr. Cohn said. 3017

As she watches her three boys play in the backyard, Acacia Clark can’t help but be consumed by an overwhelming sense of anxiety as she thinks ahead to the coming school year.It’s been a long four months for Clark and her husband, who are both trying to juggle full-time jobs, while at the same time, raise their young kids who haven’t been inside a classroom since March.“My focus on my work has been abysmal,” Clark said, as one of her 6-year-old twin boys asks her for a popsicle. “I’ll get in a few minutes here or there, but it’s been very stressful.”The COVID-19 outbreak meant schools in Newton, Massachusetts, where this family resides, had to be shut down. Across the country, school districts are carefully weighing their options about reopening in the middle of a pandemic.Clark wants her children to have the daily structure of school back in their lives. However, she's also incredibly concerned about someone in her family catching the virus.“What if one of us gets sick? That means the whole house would get sick. Then, how do we work?” she wondered.That is the reality facing countless families across the country.“It’s more than being stuck between a rock and a hard place, it’s just being stuck in a hard place constantly and not having a light at the end of the tunnel,” she added.Families are now having to juggle it all, while at the same time, making sure their kids don’t fall through the cracks.As some school resume in-person learning, many parents like Clark are worried about what could happen if there’s a sudden outbreak and their child’s school is forced to shut down.“I can either work or be there for me kids; I can’t do both,” she said.Recognizing the impossible predicament the pandemic has placed parents in, Congress passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act back in March. It gives parents two weeks of paid sick leave if you find yourself having to quarantine. Parents also get two weeks of paid sick leave at two-thirds of their regular salary if the child's school or daycare shuts down because of COVID-19. Additionally, it guarantees 10 weeks of leave at two-thirds of their salary if they need to take care of a sick child.But those benefits will run out on December 31.“Employers are recognizing that there has to be a solution. If kids can’t go back to school, parents can’t go back to work full-time,” explained Chris Feudo, an attorney with Foley Hoag in Boston.As the pandemic enters its fifth month in the United States, Feudo says another issue facing parents is that they’ve already exhausted all of their FMLA leave. Because of that, he says parents should talk to their employers as soon as possible if it appears your child’s school or daycare might shut down because of a COVID-19 outbreak.“Come up with a plan and say, ‘This is the most I can do for my employer.’ If you have a thought-out plan, it shows you're being proactive and I think employers will be more responsive to that,” he added.Feudo says if you've run out of FMLA leave and need to ask your boss for more time off to care for family members, it's best to have the conversation in-person, if possible, or via a Zoom or video conference call. He says employers are being more flexible right now because of the outbreak but they need to see that employees are willing to bring up difficult situations before they become major issues.Under federal law, it’s also illegal for employers to retaliate against someone for using FMLA leave.As for Clark, she’s still waiting to find out if her district will have in-person learning this fall and she’s doing her best to manage whatever new challenge the pandemic throws her way.“I don’t know single parents are doing it, especially if they’re trying to bring in a paycheck,” she said. 3762
As we focus on getting kids safely back to school this year, Nashville-area builders are trying to figure out how to limit the impact of potential future pandemic years down the road, which may require permanently changing the look of new schools, offices, and hospitals."Yes, we are definitely seeing clients ask questions," said Matthew Griffith, an architect with Gould Turner Group."Things like the materials we specify, how cleanable they are, rounded corners in rooms and antimicrobial surfaces," Griffith said.Griffith says with the thought of a future pandemic in mind — segmented spaces could be the norm for new schools."I think you will see a big focus on true flexible space, have demountable partitions and movable walls to where it can be segmented or more individualized on an as-needed basis," Griffith said.And that idea extends beyond school buildings. Griffith says the same can apply to hospitals and other office spaces."I think it's going to be common in a lot of designs to have dedicated spaces for temperature checks and things of that nature," Griffith said.A large building's heating and cooling system will likely be a large focus, according to Griffith. Rather than circulating air throughout the whole building, individual units may be able to keep the air within smaller areas in case of an outbreak.Schools have been through similar kinds of building trends before. In the early 2000s, it was all about security and hindering active shooters. As Starbucks prepares to close its stores later this month for mandatory racial-bias training, an incident in suburban Los Angeles is showing why that training is needed.A barista at a Starbucks in La Ca?ada Flintridge is accused of printing a racial slur on a Latino customer's drinks on Tuesday.Priscilla Hernandez told CNN that a co-worker at the restaurant where she works went to the nearby Starbucks and bought drinks. It's a coffee run they make just about every day.The co-worker ordered a white chocolate mocha and an iced caramel macchiato and told the barista his name is Pedro, Hernandez said.But she said that when he brought back the drinks, she noticed that "beaner" was written on her drink instead of Pedro. "Beaner" is a derogatory term for Mexicans in the US."I asked him if he realized what they had put on his cup. He said no. So I was really upset about it, because that isn't OK," she said.Hernandez said she called the store and they told her their employee couldn't understand what Pedro had told them. They also offered a gift card."Out of all the names they could've put on his coffees for 'misunderstanding' him they decide to put 'beaner,'" she said, noting that the Starbucks employees apparently understood Pedro well enough to get his drink orders right.Hernandez followed up with a complaint to Starbucks on Twitter. The company soon responded."Thank you for letting us know, Priscilla. This is not the welcoming experience we aim to provide, and we have reached out to this customer to apologize and make this right," Starbucks said on Twitter.Hernandez said she and Pedro met with the chain's district manager Thursday morning. She said the manager was very apologetic and promised to investigate the incident.Hernandez told CNN that Pedro declined to comment for this story. Starbucks has not responded to multiple requests for additional comment.The coffee chain is planning to close all 8,000 of its company-owned stores on the afternoon of May 29 so it can provide racial-bias training to its 175,000 employees.The training was announced in response to the arrest of two African-American men last month at a Philadelphia Starbucks while waiting for a business meeting.
