Houston city leaders, however, are speaking up.“Labor traffickers, sex traffickers, they all use hotels as part of their business model,” said Minal Patel Davis, Special Advisor on Human Trafficking to the Mayor of Houston.Davis is helping lead a new city ordinance, which requires all 524 Houston hotels and motels to train employees on how to spot and report victims of sex and labor trafficking.“We knew that we had to require it and we wanted to help increase victim identification as well and this is in line with our sort of proactive response to trafficking,” she said.Davis says Houston is the second city in the country to try this approach with the first being Baltimore.Industry leaders say though many hotels already require this kind of training, this new ordinance could help crack down on a nationwide problem.“It was about time the city worked with all of us and got something done to where education is brought to all of our members,” said Jin Laxmidas, the vice president of Houston’s Small Independent Motel Association.He believes this ordinance can open up opportunities for victims to escape an industry where there’s often no escape.“The city helps us when they make this mandatory across all hotels,” Laxmidas said. “And this is what this ordinance is about: making it mandatory for everybody.”From one-hour motels to five-star luxury hotels, experts say sex trafficking can be found everywhere.“Where people buy Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent is right here next to dozens and dozens of places where women are being sold for sex,” said Sam Hernandez of Elijah Rising, a nonprofit fighting sex trafficking.She believes this ordinance is overdue but it’s right on time for starting conversations.“I think the next battle for sex trafficking is for the greater public to listen to the stories of survivors.”Stories from the streets, some that are hard to hear, but could save someone’s life.“There ain’t nothing out here for you but death,” the self-described prostitute said of working in the sex industry. “Death and jail.” 2629

Officers rescued a couple in Connecticut early Wednesday morning who were caught in a flood after a woman yelled to her iPhone “CALL 911” to summon police.According to the Guilford Police Department, the couple was crabbing when the husband fell into the water and was trapped in the entrance of the sluice pipe that runs under the roadway. The woman was holding onto her husband, fearing if she let go, he would get sucked in.Two officers from Guilford Police arrived, and said they retrieved a rope to assist the woman in saving her husband.“One of the key reasons officers were able to locate the victim so quickly was because his wife had SIRI activated on her iPhone," the Guilford Police Department said. “Her phone was a significant distance away from where she was trying to save her husband and she could not let go of him. She shouted to SIRI to "call 911" and the phone immediately dialed and made contact with 911 fire dispatchers.”The phone’s GPS technology gave officers the location, allowing for a swift rescue.Amazingly, no one was injured from Wednesday’s incident. 1091

On Monday, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a new Public Health Disaster proclamation that imposes a number of additional public health measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19. These new measures will be effective at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, November 17 and will continue until 11:59 p.m. on December 10, 2020.The proclamation requires that when people are in an indoor public space, and unable to social distance for 15 minutes or longer, masks are required to be worn. The same requirements apply to visitors and employees inside state buildings. Additional mask requirements are imposed for certain specific establishments and gatherings.The proclamation also limits indoor social, community, business and leisure gatherings or events to 15 people. Outdoor gatherings are limited to 30. This includes wedding and funeral receptions, family gatherings and conventions. But it does not restrict gatherings that occur in the workplace as part of normal daily business or government operations.With the exception of high school, collegiate and professional sports, all organized youth and adult sports activities of any size are suspended. This includes basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, swimming, dance, and group fitness classes at gyms. A new program, called Fire Integrated Real-Time Intelligence System launched September 1. The system uses a fixed-wing aircraft that can see through smoke using using infrared and radar sensors. The plane, according to the Orange County Fire Authority, provides real-time perimeter mapping and live, high definition video to support predictive spread modeling. “The State of California must shift strategies to address the constant crisis of wildfires – this is no longer a seasonal threat,” stated Assemblywoman Petrie-Norris. “I am proud to have partnered with the Orange County Fire Authority in securing .5 million in state funds for technology that will protect lives and property by giving first responders better, stronger tools to use against the threat of wildfires.”The UCSD WIFIRE wildfire spread modeling also projects where and how large the fire will before over a 6-hour time period. The model is built to adjust for successful suppression actions by fire crews. The pilot program is being made available in San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and Ventura Counties. 1211
