SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium has opened a new exhibit showcasing one of the sea's most beautiful creatures in one of the world's largest habitats for the animal.The aquarium's new permanent exhibition "Seadragons and Seahorses" featuring Weedy and Leafy seadragons and several species of seahorses and pipefish.At the center of the exhibit will sit one of the world's largest seadragon habitats in the world, measuring 18 feet wide, 9 feet tall and containing 5,375 gallons of water, according to the aquarium.The exhibit takes guests into the lives of seadragons and seahorses, showcasing the sea life in a habitat designed to create the ideal environment for them to breed. Guests will learn how to observe the animals like scientists, catch distinguishing features, and identify courting and mating behaviors.The exhibit also gives visitors a peek into the Birch Aquariums Husbandry Team working to ensure the species thrives. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As hundreds of Regal Cinemas in the United States face the potential for closure, other movie businesses are thriving.Cineworld, the parent company for Regal Cinemas, tweeted Sunday, saying “We can confirm we are considering the temporary closure of our U.K. and US cinemas, but a final decision has not yet been reached. Once a decision has been made we will update all staff and customers as soon as we can.”Conversely, a locally owned San Diego theater is thriving during this time. Douglas Yeagley owns Cinema Under the Stars, a small, outdoor Mission Hills movie theater. Even with the changes, they sell out most nights.Yeagley said he’s been to a few indoor movies since the pandemic and noticed the lack of others inside the theater, noting that there are a few key factors keeping people away from the indoor movie setting. The indoor location is a large factor, but also the delay of the release of major pictures is keeping people away.“There’s got to be a reason to come to that movie and you have to have an interest in that movie,” he said.The announcement from Regal Cinemas comes shortly after the announcement that the release of the latest Bond film would be delayed from November of 2020 to April of 2021 and the filming of many major pictures is delayed.In San Diego County, indoor movie theaters are able to operate at either 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California drivers will want to be aware of several new traffic laws, including stipulations around unattended kids in cars and moving over for emergency vehicles, that will be enforced in 2021.Assembly Bill 2717, which goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2021, will exempt a person from civil or criminal liability for trespassing or damaging a vehicle when rescuing a child 6 years old or younger who is in immediate danger from heat, cold, lack of ventilation, or another dangerous circumstance.California had already exempted good Samaritans from liability when rescuing an animal or pet in the same circumstances. Also starting Jan. 1, Assembly Bill 2285 extends penalties for not moving over or slowing down for emergency vehicles with flashing lights on freeways to local streets and roads. Emergency vehicles will also now include tow trucks and Caltrans vehicles, in addition to law enforcement and emergency vehicles.If a driver violates the "move over, slow down" law, CHP officers can issue a ticket.Assembly Bill 47, which was signed into law in 2019, will go into effect on July 1, 2021. The law makes the act of using a cell phone "in a handheld manner while driving" for a second time within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense punishable by a point being added to the driver's record. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community leaders and residents gathered Friday to remember a San Diego civic icon.Reverend George Walker Smith died on Feb.15 at the age of 91. A memorial to honor Smith at Christ United Presbyterian Church, where he led mass for decades, was held at 11 a.m. Friday."We kind of thought of Rev. Smith as the black godfather of San Diego, and of this church, because he helped so many people," Delores McNeely, a church member of 30 years, told 10News in February.Smith was the first African American to be elected in the city when he won the race for the San Diego Board of Education in 1963. He also started the Catfish Club, where weekly lunches served as a gathering for locals interested in civic or political issues in the community.The forums began at the church, but were eventually moved to Channel 10 when the attendance became too large."All the political leaders in the community came, and we had this huge forum, and they listened to him. And if something were going on in the community, the first person that they would call was Rev. Smith," said McNeely.
