SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the biotech industry grows in San Diego, many companies are hiring, offering people a chance at high-paying jobs in an emerging field."The jobs that are in demand are the ones most difficult to fill," says Lisa Bozinovic, Executive Director of the Biocom Institute, a trade association for the industry in California.According to Biocom's most recent survey of the companies across the state, 88 percent say they plan to expand and hire in the next 12 months. The average salary is 7,000."They need people skilled in IT, HR, administration, accounting, sales," Bozinovic says. "There's a wide variety of opportunities to enter the industry."RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Biotech fields seek veterans for jobsAs demand for employees grows, Biocom is working to let people know they don't need to be a lab scientist or have an advanced degree to qualify.Most companies want someone to have 190 hours of practical lab skills experience before they start. But they're willing to train on the job, and are also partnering with local colleges to help people get that experience.MiraCosta College offers a 4-year degree in Biomanufacturing that teaches students how to combine the science with areas like quality control and regulatory compliance.RELATED: Single mom uses free career training to switch jobsThe Southern California Technology Center has programs at several Community Colleges across San Diego offering starter classes that can help people get their foot in the door.Mesa College's Bridges to Baccalaureate program helps minorities and underrepresented groups get into the industry.Biocom?has workforce development programs and special programs for veterans."A couple of courses at a community college will help someone get enough skills to transfer into the industry from something totally different," says Bozinovic. "We're lucky that San Diego has that life-science industry and we have that opportunity."Ashley Reynolds, who works in Regulatory Affairs at Tandem Diabetes, says programs like these helped her find a place in the industry, even though she had no interest in lab work."There's no one way to do something," she says.Reynolds got a bachelor's degree in biology from UC Riverside and a master's degree in regulatory affairs at San Diego State. She also went to Cal State San Marcos for a lab tech certificate. She says it was a lot of work, but it's been worth it in the long run."You make a path to get there and don't even worry about all the other obstacles in your way," she says. "If you're determined to get there, you will."That's the message Bozinovic has as well. It may take returning to school, but it's an investment in your long-term future."For ,000, you can get a four year degree and slide right into a job," she says of the program at MiraCosta. And, remember, you don't always need a full four year degree.Bozinovic and Reynolds both say someone looking to make a change should take some time to learn about the industry first, and see what part of it interests them. The best way to do that is to go to career fairs or science expos and talk to people at the booths. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As counties across the state are able to reopen, some are seeing COVID-19 case numbers bounce back up.There's concern from business owners that the state's current approach to restrictions could put them in a constant state opening and closing. Forty miles east of San Diego is the small community of Descanso."I was born and raised in Descanso," said Melanie Schlumpberger.Staying true to her roots, Descanso is where Schlumpberger opened her small business, Americutz Salon."It was going great," Schlumpberger said. "I was super busy getting new clients all the time."Then came COVID-19 and the stay at home order."It was very hard not knowing how long we were going to be closed down for," she said.Schlumpberger said savings got her through until she could reopen, but that ended up being short-lived. Cases in San Diego County spiked, and a few weeks later, her doors closed again.She said after being closed for another six weeks, she could reopen under the new state's guidelines."It was really exciting when we got to open back up," said Schlumpberger.Then college started, some county metrics spiked, and business could once again be impacted."I don't want to close down again cause it's so hard," she said. "I don't want to lose all the stuff that I've worked for."Schlumpberger said her operation is safe, and there have been very few cases of COVID-19 in Descanso and the surrounding areas.According to the County of San Diego's COVID-19 dashboard cases by residence, San Diego has more than 19,000 confirmed cases. The county's data show Descanso has 12."If the county numbers go up, unfortunately, the businesses countywide have to adjust," said San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond.He says you can look at any county across the state and find a similar issue. Desmond says instead of ping-ponging people's lives, some decisions should be made at the local level."If a business is able to operate safely and follow all the safety protocols and we can enforce those safety protocols, then they should be able to open," he said.Reporter Adam Racusin asked California's Health and Human Services Agency Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly if there should be a different approach for areas in counties not as impacted by COVID-19."Something we've long considered," Ghaly said. "You know we work very closely at the countywide level. We have throughout this entire response had many counties step forward and highlight exactly what your statement highlighted that we have differential levels of transmission throughout the different parts of the county. We continue to work with the county to figure out where those trends, especially those upward trends, where we might intervene, but certainly our approach has been county by county, countywide. We look forward to continuing to work with the San Diego leadership both on the health and the elected side to make sure that we do make the right decisions for that county broadly speaking, and we'll be looking forward to the upcoming week and those conversations."Ghaly said the state does empathize with the concern of the business owners and the idea of opening up just a few weeks ago to close back down.Schlumpberger is worried if her businesses is impacted again, it might not survive."I've put so much money and time into building my business and to just lose it because they keep closing us down again is not fair," she said.San Diego officials formally asked the governor to not include SDSU case numbers in the county’s overall total, however during a press conference Wednesday, Gov. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Data obtained by ABC 10News showed there were more than 150 complaints made to 211 involving a Pacific Beach gym’s violations of public health orders.The data regarding The Gym was compiled starting April 8; overall, there were more than 9,300 complaints from that time period involving violations of public health orders throughout San Diego County.Troy Kahle said he and his husband have been members of The Gym, located on 2949 Garnet Ave., for more than 20 years. Kahle is also a COVID-19 survivor, and he said he’s not sure how he contracted the virus.Kahle has not been to The Gym since he went to the hospital. His husband last went on July 3, and decided it was not safe.RELATED: County confirms coronavirus outbreak at Pacific Beach gym"There are no safety barriers, there are no hand sanitizers, no one is wearing a mask, and no one is socially distancing," Kahle said, passing along what his husband told him from his July 3 gym visit.On July 15, public health orders forced several businesses to close indoor operations, including gyms. But Kahle said they noticed The Gym kept their doors open.Kahle and his husband notified 211 about The Gym's indoor activities on more than one occasion. He said their goal was to prevent the spread of the virus."I can't believe they stayed open as long as they have," Kahle said.During Wednesday's news conference, San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten confirmed there was an outbreak associated with The Gym.The county had ordered it to close last week; The Gym closed on Monday."Last week, when we were working with them to close, we didn't know there was an outbreak there," Wooten said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Approximately 200 California Army National Guard troops are in San Diego County at the request of San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore, to deter looting following last weekend's events in La Mesa.About 100 troops are stationed at the La Mesa Police Headquarters. The rest are in an undisclosed area ready to move anywhere in the county.“We’ve seen arson, we’ve seen looting, and especially in La Mesa where we were there assisting La Mesa Police Department,” said Gore. “To be quite honest, the crowd overwhelmed us, we had not enough resources there, and we were in a position of defending the La Mesa Police Department, so it didn’t get burned to the ground like two banks did.”After a chaotic scene unfolded in La Mesa on Saturday following a peaceful demonstration, several businesses were looted and damaged, two banks burned down, and La Mesa City Hall sustained fire damage.“I believe that the police were overwhelmed in La Mesa, and they need backup,” said La Mesa resident Teresa Olmsted. “There’s those that are trying to get their point across and those that are taking advantage.”Gore said the troops do not have the same authority as officers and cannot make an arrest, but they can detain suspects until officers arrive.They will guard businesses and buildings where needed.“They do not have peace officer powers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Days after pleading guilty to misusing campaign funds, Congressman Duncan Hunter has announced he will resign from Congress.Hunter, who represented the 50th District, pleaded guilty Tuesday to a federal charge of conspiracy to misuse campaign funds for personal use. Though after the plea, it wasn't clear if the embattled Congressman would resign.“Shortly after the Holidays I will resign from Congress. It has been an honor to serve the people of California’s 50th District, and I greatly appreciate the trust they have put in me over these last 11 years," Rep. Hunter said in a statement Friday.RELATED: Rep.
