(CNN) -- For six months now, the days have grown shorter and the nights have grown longer in the Northern Hemisphere -- but that's about to reverse itself.Winter solstice, the shortest day of 2019, will be Saturday, December 21. Or it will be Sunday, December 22. Which day is it for you? It all depends on your time zone.CNN meteorologists Dave Hennen, Judson Jones and Brandon Miller help us understand the science and timing behind the solstice. And then we'll discover some traditions and celebrations around the world that could inspire a travel adventure.The science and timing behind a winter solsticeThe winter solstice marks the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, when the sun appears at its most southerly position, directly overhead at the faraway Tropic of Capricorn.It's the reverse in the Southern Hemisphere. There, it marks the longest day of the year -- and the beginning of summer in places such as Argentina, Namibia and New Zealand.When exactly does it occur?The solstice usually takes place on December 21. The time that the solstice occurs and the day itself shifts because the solar year (the time it takes for the sun to reappear in the same spot as seen from Earth) doesn't exactly match up to our calendar year.If you want to be super-precise in your observations, the exact time of the 2019 winter solstice will be 4:19 Universal Time on Sunday. As the Earth moves around the sun, each hemisphere experiences winter when it's tilted away from the sun and summer when it's tilted toward the sun.Wait. Why is the Earth tilted?Scientists are not entirely sure how this occurred, but they think that billions of years ago, as the solar system was taking shape, the Earth was subject to violent collisions that caused the axis to tilt.What other seasonal transitions do we mark?The equinoxes, both spring and fall, occur when the sun's rays are directly over the equator. On those two days, everyone has an equal length of day and night. Spiritually, these celebrations symbolize the opportunity for renewal, a shedding of bad habits and negative feelings and an embracing of hope amid darkness as the days once again begin to grow longer.Many of the ancient symbols and ceremonies of the winter solstice live on today.Here are five extraordinary destinations where you can experience something magical during winter's relentlessly long night:UNITED KINGDOM: Cornwall and StonehengeBetter known for pirates than the solstice, the town of Penzance on the southwest coast of England has revived a delightful array of Cornish solstice events leading up to winter solstice. The Montol Festival is a fun mix of pagan customs and more recent Christmas traditions that were once common throughout Cornwall.Early in the week, join in caroling and other events. On the solstice, referred to here as Montol Eve, get your dancing card ready for the Guise, a community dance in which people dress in masks and other "topsy-turvy" disguises based on a 19th-century tradition of the rich dressing in rags while poorer citizens effected a "mock posh" look.You can also don your finery for torchlit processions. YPSILANTI, Mich. — One entrepreneur thinks flying cars will one day change the way Americans travel — even though his creation almost cost him his life.Sanjay Dhall, the founder of Detroit Flying Car Company, is still recovering from a December crash at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti. Dhall said he was testing out the controls in his flying car prototype when he accidentally took off and found himself 150 feet in the air.“It was a miraculous escape. I did break a lot of bones from head to toe,” Dhall said. “… But amazingly the machine took the majority of the impact and I survived.”The machine was destroyed.“One wrong calculation can mean the difference between life and death,” Dhall said. He says he now is more committed than ever to getting the technology right.“I still want to get back and build another prototype, a demonstrator vehicle that will succeed,” Dhall said.A study released this week by the University of Michigan motivates him. It found that for trips of about 60 miles and longer, a fully-loaded flying car carrying a pilot and three passengers had 52% lower greenhouse gas emissions and time savings compared to ground-based gasoline powered cars with an average vehicle occupancy of 1.54."Consumers could be incentivized to share trips, given the significant time savings from flying versus driving," The study's author, Akshat Kasliwal, said.The study found flying cars would travel the 60 miles much faster, resulting in a time savings of about 80 percent compared to cars driving on the road.When compared to electric cars, fully-loaded flying cars still had 6% lower greenhouse gas emissions on trips longer than 60 miles.“When flight happens, constraints are gone. And when constraints go away things have a way of going cleaner ways,” Dhall said.The study did find that on short trips, it is more efficient to stay on the ground.Dhall points out that his prototype features wings that retract into the vehicle, allowing travel by road or sky. In theory, he says it could be an overall greener way of traveling.He says he named his company in honor of the Detroit inventors who changed the way people around the world travel.He believes flying cars will do the same in the future. 2229

(KGTV) - Tyson Kirkpatrick's family is one of the first to own a home in Main Ranch - a planned development on the northeast end of El Cajon.They bought their brand new single-family home for a price in the low 500-thousands. Prices for single family homes in the city are as much as 20 percent below the median for the county, which CoreLogic says was 0,000 in October. "We made a calculated decision that we wanted to be more competitive in this market," said El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells.Wells said the city has taken three key steps to attract builders. First, it eliminated developer impact fees which pay for important infrastructure related to the growth. The City of San Diego, for instance, charges as much as ,000 per unit. In El Cajon, the city instead relies on its general fund, boosted by a half-cent sales tax that expires in 2029, an issue now being studied at City Hall. "In the City of El Cajon, it's tough but fair, and they give you a chance to alleviate some of their concerns on the spot," said Dan Scott, the construction superintendent at Main Ranch.
