BEIJING, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang on Thursday urged the country's law-enforcement officers to strive for just and lawful handling of every legal case."We must always make efforts to optimize the criminal justice system and improve law-enforcement so each legal case is dealt with in accordance with the law," said Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), at a meeting in Beijing.Zhou, who also heads the CPC Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee, said there is still wrongful handling of legal cases which infringe upon the rights of the concerned parties and undermine the credibility of the judicial system.He called on the officials at the meeting of the Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee to treat every legal case meticulously.In particular, he said, law-enforcement officers must apply the utmost stringent of standards when handling cases involving the death penalty.

GOTEBORG, Sweden, March 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group signed a deal worth 1.8 billion U.S. dollars with Ford Motor Co. here Sunday to acquire the U.S. auto giant's Volvo car unit.Under the definitive stock purchase deal, Geely will own 100 percent of Volvo Cars and its related assets.The agreement was inked by Li Shufu, founder and chairman of Geely, and Lewis Booth, chief financial officer of Ford, at a ceremony at the headquarters of Volvo in Goteborg, the second largest city of Sweden. Geely Chairman Li Shufu attends a press conference after the signing ceremony in Goteborg of Sweden, March 28, 2010. Geely was named as the preferred bidder for the Swedish subsidiary in October 2009.Geely, which started to manufacture cars in 1998, is a major private automaker in China, with its headquarters based in southeast China's Zhejiang province. Geely Holding Group is the parent company of Geely Automobile Holdings.Besides Ford, some other Western auto giants are also seeking buyers in China. Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings has agreed to buy some powertrain technology from General Motors Co.'s Swedish Saab unit.

BEIJING, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Sunday promised orphan students in the quake-hit Yushu new homes and schools while rescuers continue to battle altitude sickness in search of survivors."There will be new homes! Each life must be cherished," Hu said.By Sunday morning, rescuers in the quake-hit Yushu Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province had saved 17,000 lives after Wednesday's 7.1-magnitude earthquake.More than 15,000 rescuers - including over 11,000 People's Liberation Army troops and armed police, 2,800 firefighters and special police forces, and 1,500 earthquake and mine accident rescue specialists - are still searching for quake survivors in Yushu.Most quake-affected people in Yushu have settled in tents and have been provided with food, clean water and other basic needs, Zou Ming, director of disaster relief department under the Ministry of Civil Affairs said at a press conference held Sunday.Some 25,000 tents, 52,000 quilts, 16,000 cotton-padded coats and 850 tonnes of instant food and drinking water have arrived in the quake zone. Another 18,950 cotton-padded tents are on the way.

  

PRETORIA, April 1 (Xinhua) -- China has pledged to import more value-added products from South Africa to optimize bilateral trade.Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin made this pledge on Wednesday when he delivered a key-note speech at the China-South Africa Economic and Trade Forum in Pretoria.South Africa was the last leg of Jia's 10-day African tour which has already taken him to Cameroon and Namibia.
