DEL MAR (KGTV) — For the first time, researchers set up receivers along San Diego coast with the ability to record when sharks are near. California State University Long Beach spent Wednesday working with Del Mar lifeguards as they dropped three receivers along the coast and tried tagging sharks nearby. Unfortunately, no sharks were tagged.Chris Lowe, with Shark Lab, tells 10News, “we just got money from the state to expand it throughout all of California.” They have receivers from Avila to the Mexico border but none located between Oceanside and La Jolla."This is a big gap for us,” Lowe says.Each receiver collects data from any tagged shark within 500 yards of the device. The receiver logs the time, date and is able to identify the exact shark based on the scanned tag. For a decade, CSU Long Beach has been studying the patterns of sharks and working to collect enough data to eventually predict where sharks will be at certain times of the year. 967

(KGTV) - This weekend 47 teams from high schools around San Diego and other parts of the US will compete in the FIRST California Robotics Regional Championships.The event brings the teens together to test their engineering and science skills. The teams get six weeks to design and build a robot to complete a handful of tasks.But the technology isn't cheap, so many teams turn to local tech companies for donations.San Diego based tech-giant Qualcomm is the title sponsor of the competition. They also give money to individual teams. Organizers say the companies see it as a way to excite teens about careers in STEM."They look at this as their future workforce," says Regional Director David Berggren. "If we can get these kids invested in STEM fields now, they're going to be great future employees, and it's money well spent for the company."The actual dollar amounts aren't given, but some schools say companies donate thousands of dollars each year. Logos on t-shirts and team booths show companies like Apple, Qualcomm, Viasat, 3M, Solar Turbines, BAE Systems, leidos and more have made donations.In addition to the money, companies donate time, providing volunteers to mentor the teens through the design and building process. They work hands on with the teams, giving kids an up close look at careers in STEM fields."It's eye-opening, it's surreal," says Southwest High School Senior Alejandro Gendrop. "To not only have someone aid us with how we're supposed to organize our team, put it together, but also to get a view into the industry and how they work and how similar our work is to theirs, it's great."The competition in Del Mar is Friday and Saturday, and admission is free. DALLAS (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday it has granted Southwest Airlines approval to begin flights between California and Hawaii, capping the airline's effort to extend its reach 2,400 miles (3,800 kilometers) across the Pacific.The Dallas-based airline's chief operating officer, Mike Van de Ven, said Southwest will announce timing for selling tickets and beginning flights in the coming days.The FAA will increase oversight of Southwest for the first six months, an agency spokesman said, adding that the additional monitoring is standard practice.RELATED: Lower fares to Hawaii offered following Southwest Airlines successful test flightSouthwest plans to launch flights to four of the Hawaiian islands, including Oahu, where Honolulu is located. It will fly from four cities in California: San Jose, Oakland, Sacramento and San Diego.CEO Gary Kelly has left open the option of adding flights between islands, which would encroach on markets dominated by Hawaiian Airlines.Southwest needed FAA certification of its ability to operate long, over-water flights with twin-engine jets where the options for emergency landings are few. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — Deputies are searching for a driver who recently hit a 39-year-old man in a Del Mar alley and sped off. The victim was walking southbound in an alley between 10th and 11th Streets at about 2 a.m. on Nov. 9, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. An unknown vehicle driving northbound in the alley struck the victim without stopping to check on him, and left the scene.RELATED: Man left for dead in Del Mar alley after hit-and-runThe victim suffered several injuries, including a broken pelvis, tibia, fibula, and femur, and several cuts to his body and head. The man is expected to survive his injuries, but is still hospitalized.Investigators believe the vehicle involved was a light-colored, compact SUV. It may now have minor damage to its front, investigators added.Anyone who may have information on this case is asked to call North Coastal Sheriff's Station at 760-966-3500 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
