The owner of Nighttown in Cleveland shared the generous gift one customer left them Sunday, expressing gratitude for the random act of kindness.“We've actually had a really, really good summer. People have supported us unbelievably,” Nighttown owner Brendan Ring said. “That's what made it even more difficult for me to make the decision to hit the pause button here again until the complications are sort of under control.”Nighttown closed Sunday, voluntarily shutting down in response to the rising COVID-19 cases in the area and will remain closed until sometime in the spring, according to Ring.“It's going to be a hard winter in the restaurant business,” Ring said.Just before the restaurant closed Sunday, a customer dining with his family approached the bar and ordered a single beer.“He literally took two small sips out of it, signed his check and left,” bartender Heather Sandow said.After signing his check, the man handed his credit card receipt to Ring on his way out.“He put it down next to me and he wished me well and said, 'Share this with your staff,'” Ring said.Ring quickly noticed the tip amount.“I quickly glanced down and it looked like a 0 tip. And I go, ‘Wow, that's a nice tip for a guy that just had a beer,’” Ring said. “Then I put my reading glasses on. My eyes almost popped out of my head.”The generous customer left a ,000 tip on the single beer purchase. For those curious, that is a 42,735% tip.“One girl point blank didn't believe what she was staring at,” Ring said. “She said, ‘No, that's not real.’”Ring said he ran after the man, thinking there had been a mistake. The man confirmed the tip was intentional.“That gentleman that left a tip yesterday, he’d be indicative of the type of customer we have here in Cleveland Heights. Just true, loyal and giving,” Ring said.Sandow said the relationship between customers and staff for the last 25 years is what sets Nighttown apart.“It's not all about money. I think personally, it's more about the gesture that was made and the unselfishness that was demonstrated,” Sandow said. “The customers have been coming here over the years. They do care about us.”As Ring temporarily closed the doors to his business and is now planning for the future, he said he will reflect on the parting words of the kind customer.“We'll be back. LONGMONT, Colo. — As some struggle with the decision on whether to hold a Thanksgiving celebration, a Colorado man says his family averted a worst-case scenario by canceling theirs.Shakeel Dalal’s family comes together every year from around the country for a large Thanksgiving celebration that usually lasts several days. A mandatory event that usually includes around 40 family members. “Everyone brings their own dish, one of my cousins brings the mashed potatoes, my cousin makes the green bean casserole, and it’s the progressive arrival of people when they get home hugging, everyone hugging all the kids, my parents,” Dalal said.They decided to still hold a small Thanksgiving this year with around a dozen people at his parent's home in the Midwest.But as the days grew closer and COVID-19 cases broke records, Shakeel grew uneasy.“Every morning I would wake up and think to myself, 'What is the risk like that I am going to get my parents sick?' My parents are in their 70’s,” he said.The Dalal family made the tough decision last week to cancel their plans.Then Monday, his father tested positive for COVID-19.The family narrowly avoided the kind of gathering health officials are concerned about.“We would never had known after I had already been there for three days and my sister would have been there for a day,” he said. “As much as I would like to tell myself, 'I would have been good to social distance and wear a mask the whole time,' it’s impossible.”Dalal shared his experience on social media hoping others would also take precautions.“Consider what you might regret if your family gets together, somebody gets COVID, and whether or not you get to see them next year,” he said.His father has minor symptoms and will hopefully fully recover. His mother has miraculously remained negative for the virus.He says the sacrifice they are making now will be worth it when they can all come together next year.“I am planning to make a full spread for myself. I bought a chicken, I am making rolls from scratch and I expect to spend a lot of time on Zoom and Facetime talking to my family,” Dalal said. ARLINGTON, Va. – Within an hour of a food bank’s opening came a delivery organizers have been counting on: frozen chicken by the pallet. “Two weeks ago, we began preparations for the future,” said Charles Meng, director of the Arlington Food Assistance Center in Virginia. Meng remembers the last time they encountered a sudden spike in need – right after 9/11. “We saw a very significant increase at that time,” he said. “And so, this is just that on steroids.” The center typically serves about 80,000 pounds of food to 2,400 families a week. One-third of those they help are children under 18, but the numbers are starting to climb. “We expect to see is many more of those families come to us. That's really going to be the first bump up,” Meng said. Like many food banks across the country, the economic conditions brought on by the coronavirus are stretching their resources and those of families all over the country. “It will last them until we come back on Friday and I don’t have to worry about what they’re eating,” said one parent, Sarah Baldrick, who was in Ohio picking up food, during a distribution at a local school there. There is some cause for concern, though, when it comes to food bank donations. So far, the food assistance center says they are still getting help from corporations, companies and individuals. However, they are seeing trouble from some supermarkets. “That amounts, in our case, to about 40-percent of the food we distribute -- have all but dried up,” Meng said of the food bank’s supermarket donations. “So, we're going to have to significantly increase the purchasing of food for our families.” That means they now have to count on monetary donations to buy food for those in need, at a time when people’s pocketbooks are taking a hit. “I'm relying on the generosity of this community,” Meng said. “We all have a need to survive this time.” It is a time that’s now filled with uncertainty.For more information on the Arlington Food Assistance Center, 2004
Hair stylist Joy Munlin has become a professional at straightening natural hair, because she says so many of her working clients request it. “Some of them have been called in the office by their superiors just to say it's too ethnic and it's distracting and can you do something about it,” Munlin says. Natural hair texture ranges from wavy, to curly to coily and has not been altered with chemical straighteners. Historically it has been seen as less attractive and unprofessional. Now, for the first time, new guidelines in New York City are aiming to protect New Yorkers from being harassed, threatened, punished, demoted or fired because of their natural hair. In a viral video, Antionette Jones Gaston shared how her job asked her to straighten her hair. “I felt so ugly that day over something as simple as my hair,” she says in the video. Gaston is no longer with the company, but she hopes the new rules will make people and organizations more aware.“Caucasians have their hair in different colors and different types of style, and they're just looked at as being different,” Gaston says. “But I’m looked at unpresentable, because of my race and the kinkiness of my hair.” TV journalist Brittany Noble Jones made headlines after being fired just a month after asking her boss if she could wear her natural hair on-air.“He was like, ‘Yeah, that's fine’ and then about a month later, he was like your natural hair is unprofessional,” Jones recalls. CYPRESS, Calif. -- It’s Friday the 13th and finals week at Cypress College in Southern California. A chilling combination for some, but for other students it’s just another day at school. They’re studying for a career that’s not for everybody – but a career that will eventually impact just about everyone. These students are prepping for their final exams in mortuary science, a degree where they can make a living while dealing with death.“This is from what I’ve learned is a gasket casket,” said Karla Ruiz, a Cypress College mortuary science student. Ruiz has a goal of advancing her career from a local morgue to national security. “I’m really into watching a bunch of CIA stuff or like crime stuff,” she said. “So, I want to find something that can open the door for that.” Cypress College is one of about 60 colleges across the country that offer this kind of end-of-life education. It may seem like a grim career choice, but the mortuary science industry is now attracting different kind of demographics. “As far as male female it’s certainly changed,” said Damon de la Cruz, Cypress College mortuary science assistant professor. “It wouldn’t be hard for us to see in a graduating class of 20 something like three males and 17 females. It’s really shifted in that direction.” It’s a direction where there’s now a growing demand for qualified workers. “There’s not enough students to meet the demand of the community,” de la Cruz said. “As result of that many of our students are placed or they get hired before they even graduate.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the median annual wage for morticians, undertakers and funeral directors is more than ,000 a year. Funeral service managers can make closer to ,000. “I’ve been in this industry for a long time and I’ve had many opportunities presented to me to where I’ve grown, been able to afford a house, and be able to live comfortably in southern California,” said Harbor Lawn Mortuary funeral director Michael Roudebush. Roudebush has hired several Cypress College students through the years. He says a career in mortuary science can be financially rewarding but also emotionally draining “Empathetic and compassionate people are what we’re always looking for,” Roudebush said. “We are people too and we’ve been through what the families have been through. We all experience loss.” Back on the college campus, students like Ruiz are gaining an understanding of death that they can use for a lifetime. She says that after studying death, she now appreciates life more. “Ever since doing this I’m closer to my family,” she said. “I actually want to go home and hang out with them.”A celebration of life that comes from knowing exactly what others have lost. 2746
