WASHINGTON — The head of an obscure federal agency that is holding up Joe Biden's presidential transition knew well before Election Day that she might have a messy situation on her hands. Prior to Nov. 3, General Services Administration director Emily Murphy held a Zoom call with the man who was in her shoes 20 years earlier during the contested 2000 election between George W. Bush and Al Gore. Seventy-seven-year-old Dave Barram says he gave Murphy some simple advice, telling her, “If you do the right thing, then all you have to do is live with the consequences of it.”However, Murphy finds herself in a much different position than Barram did in 2000. It's been 10 days since President-elect Joe Biden was projected to win Pennsylvania, giving him the 270 electoral college votes to claim the presidency.Though the outcome of the election is clear, Murphy has not yet certified Biden as the winner as President Donald Trump's campaign has filed a bevy of lawsuits — a move that has delayed the official transition of power and which has held up funds that could ease the process. In an address on Monday, President-elect Joe Biden warned that continued delay in beginning the official transition process could lead to lost lives, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic.“More people may die if we don’t coordinate,” Biden said Monday. While most Republicans have followed in the footsteps of Trump and Murphy and refused to recognize Biden as president-elect, a small group within the GOP is becoming more vocal in calling on the President to concede.Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, a moderate member of the GOP, says that continued delay in the transition of power could hamper the government's efforts in distributing a potential COVID-19 vaccine.“It is no easy matter,” Collins said of distributing vaccines. “It’s absolutely imperative for public health, that all of the planning that’s gone on for which the current administration deserves credit, be shared with the new administration.”So far, the lawsuits filed by the Trump campaign have not affected the outcome of the presidential race in any way. On Sunday evening, the campaign dropped a key portion of its lawsuit in Pennsylvania that sought to overturn hundreds of thousands of ballots on the basis of a lack of poll watchers. Instead, the campaign is choosing to focus on the issue of ballot curing, which they allege gave an unfair benefit to Democrats — despite the fact that the process likely did not effect enough ballots to overturn the election. 2526

Walmart has announced that customers won't have to leave home to return their online purchases. On Monday, the company announced they are partnering up with FedEx for a new return service that would allow items to be returned to be picked up from your home.To use Carrier Pickup by FedEx, customers would select which item(s) they are returning on Walmart's website or app, then schedule a date for pickup, and print a label. If you don't have a printer, Walmart said you'd drop it off at FedEx using a QR code off Walmart's website or app and drop the package off at a FedEx location. The "incredibly convenient" return option is free and would stay well beyond the holiday season, Linne Fulcher, Vice President, Customer Strategy, Science and Journeys said. The retail giant also announced a few changes to holiday returns, including finding purchases in-store through your debit or credit card. If you lose your receipt, start your return online to make in-store returns quick and easy and open alternate locations within the store.Walmart added that refunds would be credited sometimes as soon as the next day for online returns and same-day for in-store returns. 1171

WASHINGTON — Now that President Donald Trump has signed a government spending bill that includes 0 billion for COVID-19 relief, members of the House of Representatives voted on a standalone measure Monday to increase the amount Americans get in direct payments as part of that package. The bill passed with wide Democratic support. The relief package, which took months to negotiate, includes up to 0 in direct payments to individuals. After being in limbo for several days, the president finally signed the bill Sunday night, after the House and Senate passed it Tuesday. The president initially called the bill, which includes the federal government spending bill that funds the government for the next fiscal year in addition to COVID-19 relief measures, a “disgrace” in a video posted to Twitter last week. He called on Congress to increase the amount of money Americans received in direct payments. In response to his signature on the bill, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi released a statement welcoming the news as it helps millions of Americans “struggling to stay afloat.”“Now, the President must immediately call on Congressional Republicans to end their obstruction and to join him and Democrats in support of our stand-alone legislation to increase direct payment checks to ,000,” the statement reads. “Every Republican vote against this bill is a vote to deny the financial hardship that families face and to deny the American people the relief they need.”Before going on a break for Christmas, the House quickly tried to pass an increase in direct payments in a process called unanimous consent. However, a Republican representative raised a competing measure, which meant the effort failed. At the time, Pelosi issued a statement that the House will be back in session on Monday, "where we will hold a recorded vote on our stand-alone bill to increase economic impact payments to ,000."As for when Americans could start seeing those checks, no matter what size they are, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said last week it would take about a week to process them once the details are finalized. 2124
