Making arts and culture a part of a person's medical treatment could help their long-term health, according to researchers at the University of the Arts in Helsinki, Finland.Researchers at the University say arts and culture in the country are a constitutional right, and that the arts contribute to the health and well-being and society beyond just treating disease and illness.Kai Lehikoinen, a member of the research team, says incorporating arts and culture in treatment allows medical professionals to use more of their own creativity and helps create a more open way of discussing things with a patient."The staff members in hospitals could actually take advantage of their already existing cultural competencies or artistic competencies and bring that into work every day," Lehikoinen said.Lehikoinen says his team developed an outline of more than a dozen recommendations for hospitals to include arts and culture. Some of those recommendations include developing a cultural well-being plan, making arts an culture a strategic core value, hiring a cultural welfare coordinator and keeping records of the cultural needs and wishes of patients."Participation in the arts can enhance the functional capacity of people," Lehikoinen said. "It can prevent loneliness and social exclusion, and has positive impacts on mental health."To describe how the arts can help people of all backgrounds Lehikoinen uses an example of elderly patients who take part in dance therapy. He says it gets them up and moving as much as their body will allow, stimulates their thinking and imagination and gives them a sense of social engagement. 1636

MADISON, Wis. — Faculty at the University of Wisconsin haved voted to eliminate spring break from the 2020-2021 academic calendar with the hope that doing so will prevent the spread of COVID-19.The University of Wisconsin-Madison Faculty Senate voted 140-7 on the 2021 spring calendar at a meeting Monday. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky attorney general's office says two long-rifle shell casings were found in and near Breonna Taylor's apartment after a police drug raid that left her dead. It's the first time these specific shell casings have been mentioned by authorities investigating Taylor's death in March. One was found inside and the other outside Taylor's apartment. The notice of the two shell casings was filed in former Officer Brett Hankison's wanton endangerment case. According to the Associated Press, the one-page court filing does not say why the shell casings would be favorable to Hankison’s defense.Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron didn't mention the long-rifle casings at a September news conference announcing the indictment against Hankison, the AP reported.Another officer at Taylor's apartment that night was Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly. On Friday, Mattingly filed a counterclaim suit against Taylor's boyfriend, who previously had sued the police department. MILFORD, Ohio -- Tiffany Stone had a feeling she wasn't going to make it to the hospital when she started going into labor with her daughter, Ember Ray. "I knew it was moving really fast, and that's when I really started feeling pressure like she was getting close, and I just so happened to have her on the road," Stone said. Stone and her husband, Patrick Stone, welcomed their third child into the world Friday morning in a parking lot in Milford, Ohio, just outside of Cincinnati."We hit a curve, and it was like she was born," Tiffany Stone said. "And right in the middle of that turn, she had the baby, caught the baby, and I looked over and almost wrecked because I couldn't believe the baby was in her arm," Patrick Stone said.He called 911, and Miami Township Fire and Police came out to assist the family and take the family to Anderson Mercy Hospital."I don't think it really becomes real until you actually see the baby," Tiffany Stone said. "I mean, you go through all the motions and pregnancy sickness, but once the baby is actually on you and on your chest, it's the most incredible, it's just a beautiful miracle. It's the most beautiful thing."Ember was born a healthy 6.5 lbs. girl. "She was born on Good Friday, and you know, it's a really good, happy day today," Tiffany Stone said. 1331
