SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Mesa College professor has pulled thousands of World War II-era letters out of the archives at San Diego State University and written a new book highlighting the Aztecs' contributions to the war effort."No Forgotten Fronts" tells the story of Dr. Loren Post, a professor at SDSU during the war. He asked students to write him letters so he could keep in touch. He then took their letters and created "The Aztec News Letter" so students and families could keep in touch with each other during the war."The letters are very compelling," said Lisa Shapiro, who wrote the book. "They're inspirational and emotional."As a professor at Mesa College, Shapiro wanted a way to understand what some of her Veteran students had gone through. She heard about the letters and started reading them."Once I started, I couldn't stop," she said. "Little by little, what happens is you start to find the stories."Shapiro decided to turn those stories into a book, so more people could learn about the contributions SDSU students made during the war."That was the promise that Dr. Post made," she said. "No one would ever be forgotten."Shapiro said the newsletters that Dr. Post wrote became must-reads around campus. Over time they evolved from simple type-written pages to full-fledged publications."He didn't sugar-coat things," said Shapiro, noting that the newsletters had information about who had died, went missing or been injured. But they also had good news from campus to keep the soldiers connected to their home."By taking their words and sending them back out and showing them they weren't forgotten, this one professor made such an incredible difference in the lives of his students."Shapiro also noted that, through the letters, you get an excellent history of the entire war."You have eyewitness accounts of battles, this is what it feels like to jump out of an airplane. And you have these very touching, moving letters where people talk about grief."The book, "No Forgotten Fronts," is published by the Naval Institute Press and is available online and in stores around San Diego. You can find more information about it here. 2159

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A program dedicated to giving high school girls in under-served areas skills to help get good part-time jobs is being given a ,000 grant from The San Diego Foundation."These students are going to be able to experience real world, hands-on training in highly technical fields," said Katie Rast from The San Diego Foundation.Called "Girls Take Flight", 20 students from schools in Southeast San Diego are spending their spring break in a classroom partaking in a "drone camp".The girls are learning how to build, fly, repair, and code drones. The hope is that those skills will help them get the part-time jobs that they'll likely need to pay for college. In addition, about half of the students will be awarded internships with the Elementary Institute of Science, which is administering the program. Those internships will include tours and introductions to potential mentors from prestigious San Diego-based tech companies, including Qualcomm, Northrop Grumman, and General Atomics.10News spoke with students who say opportunities such as this one are hard to find in communities such as theirs, leading to their dedication to take advantage."I know my parents did so much to bring me here," said Sundus Mohamed, a Crawford High student and daughter of Somali immigrants. "I feel it would just be a waste, just plain rude to not take all the opportunities given to me." 1399

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A new interactive map produced by San Diego County officials shows the cities and communities hardest hit by the coronavirus. The county launched its COVID-19 case rate map on Thursday, and it uses a color tier system similar to the state’s “Blueprint for a Safer Economy” reopening plan.Users can look at case rates per 100,000 residents in specific areas or search by ZIP code.County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said, “Cities had previously requested the map to determine how they are faring during the pandemic. The map gives cities a clearer picture of how COVID-19 is impacting their residents and will help them determine whether to take more aggressive actions to enforce the public health guidance to slow the spread of the virus.”San Diego County tallied a record 661 coronavirus cases on Nov. 10. The previous high was 652 on Aug. 7.CLICK IMAGE TO VIEW FULL MAPIn light of a recent surge in COVID-19 cases, the state moved the county into its more restrictive purple tier earlier this week. Purple tier-related restrictions take effect midnight on Saturday, Nov. 14.Many nonessential businesses will be required to move to outdoor-only operations. These include restaurants, family entertainment centers, wineries, places of worship, movie theaters, museums, gyms, zoos, aquariums and cardrooms. The restrictions include closing amusement parks. Bars, breweries and distilleries will be able to remain open as long as they are able to operate outside and with food on the same ticket as alcohol.Retail businesses and shopping centers will be able to remain open with 25% of the building's capacity. No food courts will be permitted.Schools will be able to remain open for in-person learning if they are already in session. If a district has not reopened for in-person learning, it must remain remote only. Offices are restricted to remote work.Remaining open are essential services, personal care services, barbershops, hair salons, outdoor playgrounds and recreational facilities. The county will stay in the purple tier for at least three weeks before a reevaluation of case rates by the state.CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE COUNTY MAPCity News Service contributed to this report 2218

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man united families across the United States after digging into a military training crash that happened 50 years ago at MCAS El Toro.Johnathan Keene often visited his cousin's grave at Arlington National Cemetery, "I go up to visit him twice a year, typically Memorial Day and Veteran's Day." On January 15, 2019, he was in the neighborhood, stopped by and it was that day that he noticed Maj. Walter Zytkewicz grave next to his cousin's grave.Maj. Zytkewicz was in the Marines, like his cousin, and died the day before his cousin. He said that 'grabbed' him.Up until that day he knew his cousin, Capt. Robert Walls, died in a military crash, but it wasn't spoken of at the dinner table. He knew there must be a connection to the two men, so he started digging. He found four other Marines were on the same training flight July 30th, 1970. "Major Zytkewicz was 2 months away from retiring," Keene said he was studying to become a realtor.Staff Sergeant Kenneth Davis, 1st Lieutenant Mullins and Corporal Kenneth Metzdorf. Keene said Metzdorf wasn't supporsed to be on the flight, "called his best friend and said hey could you go on this flight for me today? So they switched and that cost him [his life]."Keene tracked down the redacted incident report and filled in the gaps with interviews from witnesses and Marines who knew the men on board."Witnesses say they waited too late to pull the plane out of the angle of attack and the plane hit, bounced, flipped upside down, hit again, bounced in the air, the left wing fell off, all four props fell off. The plane landed right in the middle of the air field. Flames and fuel streamed down the runway, they said it was basically a long stream of fuel and fire," he said.Flames Keene was amazed to learn his cousin and Metzdorf walked through, "the report listed 80%-90% coverage of third degree burns. I can't even imagine how he walked out," he said shocked.Mullins was killed on impact, found 50 yards from the plane with a broken leg. Walls, Zytkewicz and Metzdorf died days later from their injuries.Keene said Walls died from burns in his lungs.SSgt. Davis passed in 2013.The exact cause was redacted in the report. Keene believes the Marine Corps wants to preserve the honor of the pilot and protect his family."After the crash, the material that made up Marine Corps and Navy flight suits was changed. They thought it was a flame retardant material, unfortunately it burned and melted to their skin," he said.Keene hopes these difficult discoveries will fuel Marines' admiration. To keep their memories alive, Keene created a plaque with the team's names that will be presented at MCAS Miramar, where the squadron now resides."Every other Marine that goes through that squadron will see that plaque and realize there's five men that in some way or another touched their lives from either a safety stand-point or history and lineology of VMGR-352," Keene said. 2946

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A recent poll shows how residents of the 50th Congressional District are feeling a week after Darrell Issa entered the race. According to the poll, Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar is leading the race, followed by Republican Carl DeMaio and Republican Darrell Issa. Meanwhile, the poll is also an indication of how district residents feel about a number of issues, including impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. To get the data, SurveyUSA interviewed 770 voting-age individuals in California’s 50th Congressional District between September 27 and October 2. Of the voting-age individuals surveyed, 671 are registered to vote in the state. 592 of those registered voters were likely to vote in the 2020 California Primary, SurveyUSA says. Read the results of the 10News-San Diego Union-Tribune poll below: When asked what their impressions of Helen Horvath, David Edick Jr. and Brian Jones are, most of those asked said they were unfamiliar with the candidates. A majority of those asked said their view of Carl DeMaio was positive, while a slim majority of those asked said their impression of Darrell Issa is negative. A majority of those asked also said their impression of Ammar Campa-Najjar and Duncan Hunter is negative. 1268
