ALBANY, N.Y. — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is ordering all workers in non-essential businesses in the state to stay home to help combat the spread of COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus. The mandate will exclude pharmacies, grocery stores and other essential industries, according to Cuomo. The governor also announced that he's banning gatherings statewide. Non-essential gatherings of individuals of any size or for any reason are canceled or postponed. "First rule, only essential businesses will be functioning. People can work at home, but only essential businesses can have workers commuting to the job or on the job. Second rule, remain indoors to the greatest extent to protect physical and mental health," Cuomo said during a press conference.Cuomo said the state will implement a 90-day moratorium on evictions for residential and commercial tenants. "We will do all we can to help those financially suffering because of the #COVID19 pandemic," he tweeted. The governor also announced "Matilda's Law" that is designed to protect New Yorkers who are 70 years old or up and those with compromised immune systems. Cuomo will sign an executive order over the mandates on Friday. The moves come as Cuomo announced nearly 3,000 new COVID-19 cases overnight, bringing the state's total cases to 7,102 as of Friday. At least 38 people have died as a result of the virus in the state, according to figures from 1437

An 18-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department has died after being involved in a shooting Wednesday on Detroit's west side."Today is a tragic day for the Detroit police family," Detroit Police Chief James Craig said while addressing media outside of Sinai-Grace Hospital. Two police officers from Detroit's 12th Precinct were shot when responding to a report of a home invasion.Craig said that once officers arrived on scene, occupants in the home began frantically running out of the home because of a suspect inside the home with a high-powered rifle.Additional officers were called and four total officers made entry into the home in search of the suspect. While clearing the top floor of the home, officers did not locate the suspect. As they were heading down the stairs of the home, the suspect began to open fire on the officers. One officer, a three-year veteran on the force, was shot in his left leg. An 18-year veteran on the force sustained a single gunshot wound to his neck. He died from his injuries at Sinai-Grace Hospital. Police say the suspect is now in custody. 1099

A new study found 9/11 first responders may face a heightened risk of developing leukemia, nearly two decades after the terror attacks.Moshe Shapiro is a biostatistician with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. His team studied 29,000 members of the World Trade Center Health Program, which consists of police officers and other recovery workers.“Leukemia, we found a 41% increase in incidence compared to the general population,” Shapiro told PIX11.Researchers have long known about the substances recovery workers were exposed to in the dust and debris. Shapiro said this latest study shows illnesses like leukemia may continue to develop long after exposure. 682
