Leanne Carrasco ordered 95 pizzas. The high school senior and her friends filled up goody bags and awaited a celebratory crowd. But this was not your typical graduation party.Carrasco didn't want that. Instead, she gave back with a pizza party at a homeless shelter for women and children in Houston, Texas."Not a lot of people have the same options as me. It's not fair," she told CNN. "There are a lot of people who need help. So I give it."It took her a month to prepareCarrasco had volunteered before, with her family, at the Star of Hope Family Development Center. But this time was different.She enlisted a bunch of her friends and got to work.In the month leading up to the party they collected toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand wipes and deodorant. They packed them into 400 hygiene bags to hand out to residents of the shelter.On Sunday, it was party time. The pizza was a hit, and so were the bags.But Carrasco and her friends gave the residents something more than just food and soap."They (the teens) had respect for the these people. They saw them as peers," said Scott Arthur, a spokesman for Star of Hope. "The residents saw this as a validation that people do care."For the shelter residents, it was a magical dayIn all Carrasco and her friends served about 200 people."It was a very magical day," Arthur said. "It gives you a hope for the youth of today. They (the high schoolers) were able to think of other people."Residents of the shelter gave Carrasco a standing ovation and lined up to hug her, moved by her compassion."I told her this was her final exam, and she got an A plus," Arthur said.But the praise won't go to Carrasco's head anytime soon. The graduating senior plans to enroll this fall at Briar Cliff University and study nursing."I think you should always know you're lucky to have what you have," she said. INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives and officials say the investigation into a missing 8-month-old is a homicide investigation.Amiah Robertson was reported missing on March 16 and police issued a statewide Silver Alert for her on Tuesday. The investigation is a homicide investigation, IMPD Chief Bryan Roach said.Investigators are asking for anyone who saw Robert Lyons, the boyfriend of Robertson's mother, and or Amiah on March 9, or any day after, in the area of Rockville Road and South Mickley Avenue to contact investigators. Lyons is believed to have traveled in a 1996 maroon Isuzu Rodeo in poor condition. 661

In updated guidance issued by the CDC on Monday, it recommended that all cruise ship and river boat travel be avoided anywhere in the world during the spread of the coronavirus. The announcement comes as nearly 150 countires worldwide have reported a confirm case. The recommendation is especially important for older individuals, and those with a serious chronic medical condition. The CDC noted several recent examples of where the the coronavirus spread among passengers on board cruise ships. Recent examples include 696 cases and 8 deaths on the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan and 28 cases on the Grand Princess cruise ship in the United States, the CDC said. The CDC issued the following recommendations to tell patients who plan on going on cruise ships and river boats:Advise patients to defer all cruise ship travel, including river cruises, worldwide.Explain that their return travel to the United States may be impacted, and formal quarantine procedures may be implemented if confirmed cases are identified on board.Explain that appropriate medical care or medical evacuation may not be available internationally.Explain that some countries may refuse docking or disembarkation if there are known or suspected cases on board.For patients who still intend to cruise, advise them to practice social distancing and monitor their health both during travel and for 14 days from the time they disembark. Social distancing means staying out of crowded places, avoiding group gatherings, and maintaining distance (approximately 6 feet or 2 meters) from others, when possible.The guidance came on the same day that President Donald Trump and leading health officials suggested that gatherings of 10 or more people pose a risk to older and disabled people. The CDC also said all gatherings of 50 or more people should be outright postponed amid the spread of the coronavirus. 1895

At this school, where 93 percent of the students qualify for free lunch, staff is helping out by getting more hands-on. Every Wednesday, after the final bell rings, the school’s auditorium transforms into a barbershop.“This really does help out some of our families,” Doull Assistant Principal Rob Suglia said about the school’s new barber club. “We found that attendance is better, because when kids feel good, they want to come to school.” Before getting his doctorate in education, Suglia worked as a professional barber. Now, he’s sharing his skills to his students.“Third, 4th and 5th graders get to get exposed to a trade,” Suglia said about the benefits of the barber club. Though Bushey has made a career out of cutting hair, he believes barbering provides much more than just a paycheck.“It gives me a sense of accomplishment,” he says. “I’ve had people sit in my chair that maybe just lost a loved one. (I) give them a good haircut and all of a sudden to see their face uplifts like they’re ready to step out in the world.” It’s that combination of intimacy and innovation that makes Doull 5th-grader Kevin Sanchez want to become barber.“When I’m cutting hair, I like it and I want to keep doing it,” Sanchez says.Now, he’s learning the art of cutting hair, practicing his craft by giving his close friends tight fades after school on Wednesdays.“It’s a creative job; you get to put design in people’s hair,” Sanchez says. “I might just move out to California and cut people’s hair.”But before heading out west, getting licensed and making money – Sanchez must get through middle school. 2141
