LAKE HUGHES (CNS) - A fire burning near the Lake Hughes area was 12% contained but experienced a "flare up" due to extreme heat Friday afternoon after already scorching 11,637 acres, destroying five structures and threatening more over the last three days."There is a bit of a flare up this afternoon, but we don't really have a ton of information of where that is yet because it's going on right now," a U.S. Forest Service official told City News Service late Friday afternoon.Shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday, additional evacuations were ordered for the Fairmont area east of Lancaster, where residents were told to evacuate from north of Avenue D/Highway 138, south of Avenue A, west of 150th Street West and east of 200th Street West, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Palmdale Station."Fire will continue to grow and threaten the surrounding communities of Lake Hughes, Leona Valley, Lake Elizabeth, Pine Canyon, Quail Lake, Three Points, Historic Ridge Route and Inventoried Roadless Areas, fire officials said during a late-morning update Friday. "Spotting and aggressive fire behavior will continue."Fanning the flames is this weekend's heat wave, with firefighters braced for dangerously hot weather that will make battling the fire more difficult.The focus for crews on Friday was "fire suppression, air operations, evacuations as needed and structure defense operations ... line construction where possible," officials said.No injuries have been reported, but at least five structures have been destroyed and further damage assessments were being conducted.The fire was first reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest, according to the U. S. Forest Service, which was battling the blaze with Los Angeles County Fire Department crews and assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Monterey Park, Long Beach and Santa Monica fire departments."There have been areas of this fire that have not burned in decades, (and) it's in inaccessible terrain, which has added to the complexity of the fire," said Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby.Although some structures were lost, a number of structures were saved by firefighters, he said."It's going to be a hot, dry summer -- and it's going to be a very, very hot, dry weekend," Osby said.Mandatory evacuations have been in effect for the area east of Ridge Route Road, west of Lake Hughes Road, north of Pine Canyon Road and Lake Hughes Road, and south of state Route 138, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. Ron Shaffer of the Palmdale Station.There are more than 100 structures in the evacuation area, including primary residences and outbuildings, in the communities of Lake Hughes and Pine Canyon, officials said.Evacuation centers were set up for displaced residents at Highland High School in Palmdale and the Castaic Sports Complex."In this evacuation, unfortunately because of COVID protocols, a shelter is not actually established, people will have to stay in their cars," Shaffer said earlier. People staying in their cars at a center are allowed to have small animals with them.Animal boarding was made available at Castaic Animal Care Center, Lancaster Animal Care Center, Palmdale Animal Care Center and the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, according to the American Red Cross Los Angeles.San Francisquito Canyon Road has been closed from Stater Lane to Spunky Canyon, as well as Three Points Road from State Route 138 to Pine Canyon.A closure order is limiting public access to Cottonwood, Spunky Canyon, and Sawmill-Liebre campgrounds and, a small section of the Pacific Crest Trail for the safety of firefighters, forest officials said.More than 1,500 firefighters, along with three helicopters, five water tenders, and 173 engines, were assigned to the firefighting effort.The cause of the fire remains under investigation. 3923

(KGTV) - A wellness center in La Mesa is accused of misleading patients by illegally marketing a breast cancer screening device, according to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).This week, the FDA issued a formal warning to Total Thermal Imaging Inc. and its president and co-owner, Linda Hayes, for illegally marketing and distributing an unapproved thermography device as a sole screening device for breast cancer and other diseases, according to a press release.Thermography is heat-sensitive imaging depicted in variations of color.10News spoke to San Diego's Susan G. Komen breast cancer awareness organization, which says thermography alone is not enough. “It can be used in addition to a mammogram or other screening tool that has been shown effective but there hasn't been any scientific evidence for thermography right now being a standalone tool,” says Lizzie Wittig, Director of Mission Initiatives and Public Policy.The FDA is demanding a response within 15 working days.No one at the clinic answered the door. 10News called and sent messages, and got this text reply: "Total Thermal Imaging Inc. is reviewing the warning letter from the FDA and developing a response. We will work with the agency to ensure our products comply with acceptable regulations." This isn't the first time that a clinic has gotten a warning letter about thermography. LAS VEGAS — Six months ago, 58 innocent people lost their lives in a shooting on the Las Vegas Strip. Hundreds of people gathered Sunday, April 1 to remember the 58 people who were killed in the deadliest mass shooting in modern history.The gathering took place outside of the venue where the deadly shooting took place on Oct. 1, 2017.Organizers handed out 58 white glow sticks.Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak presented 58 red roses to the organizers.After a reading of the names of the dead and a moment of silence, the attendees took a solemn walk around the perimeter of the festival grounds, which are inaccessible.  647

LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) - A man died after being shot by deputies inside a Lemon Grove Del Taco Saturday night, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The shooting happened just after 8:30 p.m. on the 7000 block of Broadway. Deputies were called to the restaurant after a man reported that a suspect pointed a gun at his family while they were inside the restaurant. When deputies arrived, the suspect pulled out a handgun before being shot by deputies. The man was taken to the hospital where he later died. According to the department, all three deputies fired their weapons. None of the deputies were injured. LAKE CHARLES, La. -- “We’re just happy to have a place that is somewhat whole and air-conditioned,” said Amanda Day.Day and her family haven’t been to their home since late August.“Our home was not anywhere near as damaged as much as others but definitely damaged, and we were offered a place to stay here, because they had a generator,” said DayThey evacuated with most of Lake Charles, Louisiana when Hurricane Laura hit on August 27.Now, they’re staying at a friend’s house where more than a dozen people at a time have been living, while their home is repaired.“I’d say upwards, 15 to 18, at different points, but right now there’s like eight or nine of us that are pretty much here all the time,” Day said.This time of year, her three kids would normally be back at school. Because of Laura, they’re back at home.“I don’t really like it. I’m basically at the house the entire time, all the time. I don’t really go anywhere," her tenth grader, Benjamin Day said. “It never started, it never started,” said Day.Lake Charles, and much of western Louisiana, was hit hard by Hurricane Laura. The 150mph winds ripped roofs off homes and displaced thousands of people. It also took out the internet.“Online learning is a little bit difficult without internet, however,” said Karl Bruchhaus, the Superintendent of Calcasieu Parish School District. He says all but two of the district's 76 buildings were damaged in the storm. While buildings are being repaired to the tune of 0-0 million, he’d like for the district to open virtually by the end of the month.Whether schools or students have internet by then is up in the air."We’re going to offer it. We’re not going to mandate it and we certainly can’t hold people accountable for something they can’t get to," Bruchhaus said.He knows not all of his 33,000 students have both wifi and a device. At least 10% don’t.“3,000 or so of our students. In this situation, with our internet being down parish wide, you know, of course it’s much greater than that,” said Bruchhaus.The word device includes cell phones. Imagine how hard it would be to submit homework on a phone.Day says she’s in a tough spot, but knows there are many families in worse positions than hers.“A lot of people don’t have internet. It’s worrisome just for me overall that we still have such a huge line in the sand of haves and have nots. Even in this little tiny town,” she said. Just a few miles north, Courtland Williams and his friends from Grambling State University are volunteering time and supplies to help the recovery. Courtland grew up in Lake Charles, he knows the challenges kids are facing.“We were using books from five, six years ago, tore up into pieces, missing six, seven pages here and there. You go to school on the other side of town or you talk to your friends on the other side of town, they’re not having that problem,” said Williams.He’s worried about old books and broken supplies carrying over to the new digital classroom.“While I acknowledge opportunities in homes, may very from home to home, based on a family's personal information, the truth is, our schools who have more, low socio-economic students qualify for more services from the feds and actually get more title money than other schools,” Bruchhaus said. He says that translates to more devices in schools like those that Courtland attended. But that doesn’t mean those students are set up with those devices at home.It’s a challenge for the district and the community, a community that both Day and Courtland say will help each other out to get through a pandemic and a hurricane.“You have to depend on, that never that maybe you never met before, cause they’re going through the same thing you are. What can you do to help. What can I do to help someone else,” said Day. “Lake Charles is strong, Lake Charles has always been strong. From Hurricane Katrina, Harvey, any other hurricane that hit us, storms that hit us. Lake Charles is very strong, along with the rest of Louisiana. So Lake Charles will shake back,” said Williams. 4053
