OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Oceanside has unveiled its latest effort to achieve their zero waste goals set back in 2011.Green Oceanside Kitchen is a state-of-the-art food recovery and preservation facility dedicated to eliminating waste and feeding the community."We need to do better, we need to feed our community and educate our community," said Colleen Foster, the City's Environmental Officer. The City teamed up with O'Side Kitchen Collaborative for the new project. They'll collect unwanted food from farmers, backyards, and food businesses, turning the goods into something delicious. "I could've done anything, but for me, making an impact in my community as well as it tasting good is the best!" said Vallie Gilley, Executive Director of O' side Kitchen Collaborative. The facility includes a 1,700 square foot commercial kitchen and a 500 square foot fridge that can hold about a semi-truck load of food. There's also an interactive demonstration kitchen for culinary arts training and education. Foster says more than 40 percent of what is grown and produced in the U.S. is wasted. With the new green facility, planners hope to save 20 percent of what would've gone to waste."That's thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of pounds of food," said Foster. The facility was designed to maximize food recovery and preservation with specialty equipment installed throughout.Gillie's team will also be catering events to help support the program. 1475

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Anyone browsing through 101 Marketplace in Oceanside will find an assortment of items for sale on the shelves and show floor.The antique and consignment store opened just two weeks ago amid a business landscape struck by the pandemic. But owner, Roy Cisneros is optimistic about the future."If today is the worst day, tomorrow has got to be better," Cisneros said. Cisneros describes himself as naturally optimistic. That optimism has helped him get to where he is now."We've been homeless for two years, me, my wife, and my kids," Cisneros said. Cisneros, a father of five, says he says it didn't take much to fall into homelessness. "You get behind in rent, that's all it takes, really, and then you are living in hotels."He says they hit rock bottom in 2019 when his wife and his kids had to stay in a shelter."We were like, 'You get in the shelters, I'll sleep in the car, we'll figure this out, we'll save some money that way,'" Cisneros said.At one point, Cisneros worked as many as three jobs at one time to make ends meet and save up just enough."I had saved up a little bit of money from 2019; we purchased a little tiny trailer, we stayed in the trailer for about six months," he said.In August, he discovered that space on 101 S Coast Highway was available and affordable. Cisneros says it was an opportunity he couldn't pass up. Though he heard of businesses struggling and closing because of the pandemic, Roy decided to bet on the days ahead."We took all of our savings, we sold the trailer, we got the store, and we're doing it," he said.Cisneros says he and his family are currently still living in a hotel, but he says that could change very soon."If you keep trying, eventually you'll get there," he said.Roy says they plan to give back to their community. They plan to donate some of their profits to a north county organization that helps the homeless. Cisneros says he will also take donated items to be sold, and the profits from that sale will also be donated. 2018

OLATHE, Kan. — Court documents released Monday say a Johnson County, Kansas mom was nearly successful in killing at least two of her children last month.Therese Roever faces three counts of attempted capital murder for allegedly drugging her three children on February 19.It wasn’t until her ex-husband arrived to pick up the kids that anyone knew something was wrong.Court documents indicate the ex-husband tried to get into the house for more than an hour but Roever did not open the door or answer the phone.When Roever finally let the ex-husband inside, he found his ex-wife “drugged and groggy.”First responders arrived to find the couple’s 7-year-old daughter on a bed not responding. Their 5-year-old initially got up from the bed but then stumbled to the ground. A third child, 7, was found in the bathroom crying.While the kids were en-route to the hospital, paramedics used Narcan – a drug commonly used to reduce the symptoms of opioid overdose – on two of the kids.Doctors told investigators that had police not arrived when they did, two of the children would have died.Roever remains in the Johnson County Jail on a million bond. She’s scheduled to be back in court for a preliminary hearing on April 20. 1259

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A state-wide program to help community college students transfer to 4-year schools has found increased success at Mira Costa College.The Puente Program helps educationally disadvantaged students navigate the complicated process of applying to 4-year schools, while also bringing them up to speed with other students who start their college careers at universities."They would transfer, but they were not ready," says Mira Costa Puente Counseling Coordinator Sinar Lomeli. "They didn't have the reading or writing comprehension skills. So they couldn't compete with students who were already there."The Puente Program began in 1981 at Chabot College in Hayward. It's now in 64 community colleges around the state. The students take two semesters of English reading and writing classes, and also get mentoring and counseling to guide them towards a 4-year degree."When I got to school, I was like a dog chasing a car," says Mira Costa Sophomore Manny Ramirez. "Getting into the Puente program gave me a sense of belonging. I could say I belong at college, and I can do whatever I set my mind to."Mira Costa's Puente Program is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2019. This year they're expanding to let current Puente students volunteer at elementary schools around Oceanside and Vista. That helps them get public service hours they can put on a college application. It also helps inspire the next generation to see college as a possibility."It gives us hope that we're leaving behind something for them to build on," says Ramirez.Results of the Puente Program have been well documented. Between 2013 and 2016, Puente student enrollment at UC schools has increased by 59%. Officers in New Jersey broke up a large house party in New Jersey with hundreds of people in attendance, authorities said.Police responded to a residence along Mill Pond Road in Jackson following a report of a suspicious incident around 8:30 p.m., according to Jackson Police Department.Officers arrived and spoke with several neighbors who said a house on the street was rented out to a group that was having a large party, causing a disturbance.Police contacted the homeowner, who said he had rented out the residence on Airbnb.The party expanded to about 700 people in attendance, with over 100 vehicles parked in the area, according to police.Officers began clearing the crowd from the residence and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office was contacted and authorized charges against the homeowner and party organizer for violating the state’s executive order in reference to the number of attendees allowed at a gathering.Officers from the Freehold Police Department, Howell Police Department, Lakewood Police Department, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Ocean County Sheriff’s Department, and New Jersey State Police also responded to assist and clear the large crowd from the residence and direct traffic as people left the area, according to authorities.During that time, police also received a call from a resident nearby reporting people who attended the party had broken into their residence and were damaging property.An investigation determined a family member of the caller was at the original party and had invited a large group back to their residence. The group was then dispersed, police said.It took until 1 a.m. for the officers to clear the residences of partygoers and all the vehicles from the neighborhood.The homeowner, later identified as 40-year-old Yaakov Weiss and the party organizers, 23-year-old Patience Guanue and 22-year-old Alicia Hinneh, were issued summonses.Gov. Phil Murphy referenced the party during his daily coronavirus briefing Monday while discussing flare-ups, particularly among young adults who attended recent house parties."You're looking for trouble, you're absolutely looking for trouble, no matter how old you are," he said of people who don't comply with social distancing orders.State Police Superintendent Pat Callahan attributed the large parties to the lack of bars and restaurants open due to the pandemic.“I do think the fact that bars and restaurants are close then create this underground situation, which is certainly not what we want," he said.In a statement, an Airbnb spokesperson said the company is in full contact with the company and is offering their support."We strongly condemn the reported behavior, which represents both a clear violation of Airbnb’s community policies and a particularly serious abuse during this public health crisis," Airbnb said.The listing has since been deactivated and the party organizers have also been removed from the platform, the company said.WPIX's Kristine Garcia first reported this story. 3005
