SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across California, a record-breaking 3.7 million acres have already burned in more than 8-thousand wildfires this year. Both Cal Fire San Diego and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are preparing to respond to potential fire disasters, as dangerous weather conditions return to San Diego County.“We know the potential is there,” said Thomas Shoots, a public information officer for Cal Fire. “We’re holding all our firefighters on duty, and we’re staffing on every piece of equipment to make sure we’re covered, we’ve brought on contract dozers. We’ve asked that the other agencies that we work with here in the county provide resources, and they stepped up, and we’re very appreciative of that.”San Diego Fire-Rescue has also increased staffing and equipment. The National Weather Service extended a Red Flag Warning to Tuesday at 5 p.m. for the inland valleys and mountains.A heat advisory will also be in effect Tuesday through Thursday.Just weeks ago, the Valley Fire destroyed homes and charred more than 16 thousand acres in the East County. With similar weather conditions, fire crews hope community members will try to reduce the possibility of a fire sparking.“If everybody could do their part, anything they can think of that can start a fire, whether its dragging chains down the highway, clearing brush with metal motors, please be extra cautious,” said Shoots.SDG&E warned 700 customers in the backcountry of the possibility of Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) but sent the all-clear to most customers by Monday afternoon. However, 19 customers in Descanso may still be impacted by PSPS overnight into Tuesday. 1651

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego Police sent out a warning to Faculty and Staff about a series of burglaries this week.  The email states the thefts occurred at occupied and unlocked apartments.  There were three cases of break-ins and attempted break-ins that took place in campus housing complexes. There was another report of a car break-in. But UC San Diego police say the San Diego Police Department is working on nearly 30 burglary cases in the similar area. According to UCSD Police, on Tuesday, a woman at The La Jolla Del Sol apartments reported getting out of the shower and finding a female intruder. The resident yelled, and the thief took off with a backpack, cell phone, purse, and laptop.   On Sunday, a resident at the Mesa Nueva Apartments reported a male intruder removing the screen from his living room window.   On Monday a similar report out of the Sixth College Apartments for undergraduates. In both cases, the resident interrupted the break-ins, and the suspect took off. They are working with San Diego police to determine whether they are connected to any of their 30 or so burglary cases. The email alert to UCSD students and faculty gave the following general crime prevention tips:If you are the victim of a burglary or you discover someone inside your residence:  1351

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When a car breaks down or a housing voucher falls just short, San Diegans can slip through existing safety nets and into homelessness. Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and members of the Regional Task Force on the Homeless announced a proposal Monday to address those shortfalls in traditional housing assistance through what’s called a “flex pool.”Based on models used in cities like Los Angeles and Chicago, the Flexible Funds for Housing Program would combine government and private funds, with fewer restrictions on who qualifies and how the money is used. RELATED: San Diego homeless count 2019: Data shows over 8,000 living on county streets or in sheltersThe result, supporters say, would be a pool of funds that can get people off the streets and into housing faster, and keep others from winding up on the streets in the first place.“This program has the opportunity to be a difference-maker,” Fletcher said. “Instead of one population, we can create a housing platform that can serve anyone who has a need and can allow us to move quickly.”The County Board of Supervisors will take an initial vote on the proposal Tuesday. If the board votes to move forward, staff would begin drafting specifics and negotiating with other government agencies to build and administer the fund.RELATED: 10News Exclusive: Father Joe discusses homelessness in San Diego“The development of a regional flexible pool frees us from the typical constraints of most housing subsidies and lets us operate with a whatever-it-takes mentality,” said San Diego council member and Regional Task Force chair Chris Ward.Supporters say too frequently, unexpected emergencies like a medical diagnosis or a car breakdown bring families to the precipice of homelessness, where traditional housing assistance isn’t built to help.“I don’t even want to tell you how many car repair emergencies have put people in the crazy position of having to choose between paying the rent and staying housed, and not fixing their car and not going to work,” said Community Housing Works CEO Susan Reynolds.RELATED: North County mom digs family out of homelessnessIn addition to car repairs, flex pool funds could be used to cover things like security deposits, past-due rent, and other obstacles to maintaining housing. The pool could also be deployed for broader housing strategies like master-leasing apartment complexes and creating a roommate-matching program, supporters said. The county has .5 million in homelessness aid funding that could be used for a flexible pool, Fletcher said. The goal would be to grow the pool significantly with funds from other governments and private sources, he said. 2682

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — UC San Diego Health and three other UC Health medical centers will begin to recruit participants for an antiviral drug being tested to treat the novel coronavirus. The medical system will start "phase II" clinical trials for the antiviral drug remdesivir. The drug has "shown activity in animal models and human clinical trials of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, Ebola, Marburg and other viruses," according to UCSD Health.RELATED: San Diego hospitals start drives for personal protective equipmentRemdesivir is not currently approved for the treatment of any infection by the FDA, but is currently undergoing trials for treating multiple viruses, including COVID-19.“With this type of adaptive study design, if remdesivir proves to be safe and active, the clinical trial may be rapidly adapted to remove the requirement for a placebo arm and add a treatment arm that includes other promising antiviral or other investigational drug to compare with the activity of remdesivir," said co-principal investigator Constance Benson, professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine and an infectious disease specialist at UC San Diego Health.RELATED: Nurse urges people to turn over N95 masks to San Diego hospitalsUC San Francisco, UC Irvine Health, and UC Davis Health are also participating in the trials.
