Parents often worry about their kids riding the school bus. But waiting for the bus or getting off after school can pose a far greater danger. The risk was highlighted this month, as at least five children lost their lives when they were hit by drivers near school bus stops across the U.S. At least seven other children were hurt in bus stop incidents. Now, a petition on WhiteHouse.gov seeks to call upon national leaders to create and sign legislation that institutes stricter penalties on drivers who violate rules around stopping for school buses. The petition makes suggestions such as 30 days in jail and 90-day license suspensions. Overall, wrecks involving school transportation, including buses, make up a tiny fraction of deadly vehicle incidents — less than 1 percent of nearly 325,000 fatal crashes in the US from 2006 to 2015, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data show. 908

PITKIN COUNTY, Colo. — A bear attack inside a home left one person with "severe swipe injuries" early Friday in the Aspen, Colorado, area.Randy Hampston, public information officer for the northwest region of Colorado Parks and Wildlife, said a call about the attack came in at 1:28 a.m.Hampston said the house, which is located in the Clear Creek neighborhood outside Aspen, has a lever door handle on its front door. He said some newer homes have this feature to be ADA compliant, but it makes entry much easier for bears."You’re talking about a 400-pound animal — they can push down with enough force to sometimes pop those locks," he said. The homeowner heard noises in the living room and went to check on it, Hampston said. Then, he saw the large bear. The bear swiped at the him, leaving him with severe lacerations to his head, neck and face. The bear then ran out of the home, Hampston said. Other family members in the house called 911.The injured homeowner was transported to a hospital with severe injuries to his face and neck, according to CPW. He is undergoing surgery, but is stable and his injuries are not life-threatening.Hampston said CPW has been receiving reports of a bear in the area and believes this was the same one. He said he also believes it's the same bear that has been reportedly getting into trash in the area over the past few years. Past attempts to haze or trap it to relocate it elsewhere have been unsuccessful.Wildlife officers are working in the area. A search for the bear is underway with the help of tracking dogs.Because DNA evidence was collected in the home, wildlife officers will be able to test the DNA of a suspected bear to ensure it's the same one.Once they find the bear, it will be euthanized due to its history of run-ins with humans and this attack, Hampston said.He said while it's not rare to see a bear around Aspen, it is uncommon for one to get inside a home. This marks the first bear attack in Aspen this year.Three people reported a bear attack in Aspen last summer, he said. A hiker was attacked while walking along the Hunter Creek Trail, one person was attacked outside a resort, and a restaurant manager was bitten by a bear at a trash bin.CPW recommends visiting its website to learn about how to bear-proof your home. This story was originally published by Stephanie Butzer at KMGH. 2356

PHOENIX, Arizona — "I would go out by myself, I would hang out with whoever wanted to hang out but my real relationships were all failing," said Stephani Krise. That's because Krise says the only relationship she cared about was the one she had with alcohol.Constant partying after work, binge drinking, stints in the hospital and traditional rehab seemed hopeless."After I relapsed and I couldn't stay sober, I kind of had given up hope," said Krise.Another woman, Sarah Kennedy, says her long addiction to alcohol had affected friendships, her career and of course, her health. And like Krise, Kennedy was willing to try just about anything."Read about it on the web and just seemed too good to be true," said Kennedy. What she read about is the Sinclair method. Her first appointment she met with a doctor, got a prescription, took a pill, and later that day, had a drink, doctors’ orders of course. If the protocol seems like a radical idea, that's because it is."I mean I think it's time to change the way addiction treatment’s been for a long time," said Dr. Michael Yasinski.Dr. Yasinski is spear heading that effort at his Scottsdale office."It's founded in science and data which is why I liked it," said Dr. Yasinski.Every one of his patients gets to continue drinking as long as they take the anti-addiction drug Naltrexone one hour before they knock one back. The pill works to block pleasure sensors in the brain. He says combined with psycho-therapy the cravings go away."It's not seeing or enjoying alcohol like it normally does, so it starts to lose interest over time," said Dr. Yasinski."I came back two weeks later and he said 'how did you do,' and I said well I felt great cause I didn't have to change a thing," said Kennedy. But what did change, was the desire to drink. Both report drinking isn't a problem anymore. This coming as nearly 70 percent of traditional rehab patients relapse within the first year."To me, it’s like there is no relapse, you just keep going and keep improving," said Kennedy."I just feel so much better about myself and that's what makes the difference," said Krise.A true testament to what taking a chance can lead to.So why are we just hearing about this now? Traditionally alcoholism has been treated as a moral issue rather than a medical one.According to those in the treatment industry, most doctors just aren’t trained in this type of treatment. But that could soon change. For more information on this treatment method, CLICK HERE.  2511

PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - Snow came down steadily and heavy at times in the Pine Valley area of East San Diego County Thursday. At Sunrise Hwy and Old Highway 80, the California Highway Patrol and Caltrans established a checkpoint requiring snow chains to proceed toward higher elevations of Mt. Laguna. The drive eastbound on Interstate 8 from San Diego was largely heavy rain and wind until Highway 79, when the rain turned to snow at about 3,700 feet. Check 10News Pinpoint Weather conditions10News spoke to CHP and Caltrans officials in the area who said there had been a few minor accidents before noon with vehicles sliding off I-8 and Highway 79. No one was injured, officials said. 10News spoke to a family that drove up from El Cajon to see the snow. Grandpa Tommy Diaz said he didn't think the drive was too bad; there was some ice on the road. He just kept it slow. "You've got to be mindful of other cars around you," said Diaz. "Because there's always that guy who want to go fast. It's my granddaughter's first time in the snow so we just stay in the slow lane."RELATED: Cold winter storm dumps snow on San Diego mountainsCHP said chain requirements along Sunrise Highway were expected to be in place throughout the day. 1250

Personnel from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who have been stationed in the Democratic of Congo to help control the ongoing Ebola outbreak have been pulled back from the worst impacted areas due to safety concerns, a US government official familiar with the situation told CNN Monday."They are not in any hot spots," the official said.Since this most recent outbreak began Aug. 1, there have been 211 cases of Ebola, including 135 deaths as of Sunday, WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic confirmed. Fifty-five patients have recovered from the illness. He said there has been a recent increase in cases because of "challenges faced by the response team.""For a couple of days we were not able to function really, and in the last couple of weeks we could not function at 100%," said Jasarevic. Challenges include a spike in violence that led to a change in location for CDC responders."The recent spike in violent incidents makes the response more difficult, and increases the risk of spread not only in the DRC but also in neighbouring countries" Jasarevic stated in an email. 1097
