SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Controversial Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel made an unexpected appearance in San Diego Thursday.Manziel threw passes during the "Pro Day" at the University of San Diego, where NFL scouts gathered to evaluate some Toreros seniors. They also took notes on the former Texas A&M star.Manziel, who currently lives in the L.A. area, has been working with San Diego-based quarterback guru George Whitfield, Jr. on his game.He flamed out after just two seasons with the Cleveland Browns.Manziel’s personal troubles include an arrest for disorderly conduct, an altercation with his girlfriend, and time in rehab for an unspecified issue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Days after claiming that "everyone is lying" about COVID-19, Chuck Woolery announced that his son has contracted the virus.The former game show host-turned-political activist made headlines earlier this week when President Donald Trump retweeted Woolery's claim to his 83 million followers."The most outrageous lies are the ones about Covid 19. Everyone is lying," Woolery said in that tweet."The CDC, Media, Democrats, our Doctors, not all but most, that we are told to trust. I think it's all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election. I'm sick of it," his tweet said.The 79-year-old deactivated his Twitter account Wednesday after publishing a tweet saying, "Covid-19 is real and it is here.""My son tested positive for the virus, and I feel for those suffering and especially for those who have lost loved ones," Woolery said in a tweet on Monday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Assemblymember Todd Gloria, D-San Diego, praised state lawmakers for sending a bill to the governor that would restrict gun shows at Del Mar Fairgrounds.Assembly Bill 893 would ban the sale of guns or ammunition anywhere on the Del Mar Fairgrounds property beginning in 2021, according to Gloria's office. The bill passed the California Senate 27-11 Tuesday.Anyone who violates the bill could face a misdemeanor charge, according to the bill.Gloria is a co-author of the legislation alongside Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner-Horvath, D-Encinitas, and Assemblywomen Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego.“This is a victory for gun sense and making our communities safer in San Diego,” said Gloria.“This bill is about offering more than thoughts and prayers. It’s about policy and action and listening to the communities around the Fairgrounds who no longer want these events taking place. In California, we value people over guns and this bill makes that clear."Gov. Gavin Newsom has until Oct. 13 to sign or veto the legislation.Gun shows at the fairgrounds has been hotly debated over the last year. In September 2018, the 22nd DAA's Board of Directors voted to temporarily suspend gun shows at the Del Mar Fairgrounds until the state developed new safety policies around them. The decision ended the Crossroads of the West gun show's contract with the fairgrounds after nearly three decades.In February 2019, the three Assemblymembers introduced AB 893 into the state Assembly. The bill passed the Assembly 48-16 in April. Then in June 2019, a judge ruled that gun shows could continue at the fairgrounds while the court considered a lawsuit against the fairground's decision to suspend the shows.Throughout the the back-and-forth, the legislation has been opposed by the NRA, Gun Owners of California, and the California Rifle and Pistol Association. 1867

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Councilman David Alvarez says he's tired of driving by vacant storefronts in urban communities like East Village and Barrio Logan. He believes city rules requiring some high-rises to put retail space on ground floors are too rigid. Alvarez has put forth a proposal that would allow for more flexibility and creativity, giving buildings the option to put housing and live-work spaces on ground floors. "We need to think outside the box when it comes to housing. We have placed so many rules on the books it makes it hard to do things differently," said Alvarez. If passed by the council, Alvarez says the permits to convert spaces would be temporary. After a period of time, potentially 10 years, the owner would reevaluate whether a retail store could then succeed. If not, they could apply for another permit. East Village alone has seen multiple businesses shut its doors in recent months, including Smashburger, Bottega Americano, SOL CAL Cafe, The Market Hall and Tilted Kilt Pub and Eatery.  1054
