BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong Sunday stressed the importance of nurturing more first-class financial personnel for the nation.     Liu made the remarks when visiting the Beijing-based Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) to convey congratulations on its 60th founding anniversary.     CUFE is the first university specialized in financial and economic studies established by the People's Republic of China. It is one of the 100 universities to which the Chinese government attaches top priority in the 21st Century.     Noting that finance is an important state function, and the core of modern economy, Liu expected the university to play a better role in cultivating innovation-oriented financial talents.     She also called on the university to contribute more to the national and local development programs.

BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top advisory body, held a meeting Monday to study and discuss the essence of the just-concluded Fourth Plenary Session of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, presided over the meeting, at which Vice President Xi Jinping delivered a report on the topic. They are both members of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau.     In his opening speech, Jia highlighted the importance of the CPC Central Committee's session under the current situation as China is exerting efforts to cope with the impact of the international financial crisis in an effective way, maintaining a stable and relatively fast economic growth, striving for new victories in building an overall prosperous society, and opening up a new situation for the socialist cause with Chinese characteristics. PYONGYANG, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Kim Jong Il, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), held talks here on Monday and reached important consensus on China-DPRK relations and the promotion of a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.     Premier Wen extended sincere greetings and best wishes to Kim on behalf of Chinese President Hu Jintao.     The hard-earned friendship and friendly cooperative relations achieved by the joint efforts of several generations of the two countries conform to the aspiration of the two peoples, Wen said, adding that the two nations should pass on the friendship from generation to generation.     China is willing to work with the DPRK to maintain high-level exchanges, deepen pragmatic cooperation, strengthen coordination on major issues, and push forward the good-neighborly and friendly cooperative relations, he added.     Kim asked Wen to relay his greetings to Chinese President Hu. BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- China still has a long way to go in upgrading industrial processes, although it had managed to secure economic stabilization and was moving upwards, Zhuang Jian, a senior economist with the Asian Development Bank, said Thursday.     "China has achieved great success in bolstering the economy's growth through a series of plans to stimulate it, but it should also continue making efforts to upgrade its industries, as well as its energy-saving and pollution reduction measures, to sustain development," Zhuang said.     China's economic growth had slowed during the global downturn, but expanded 7.9 percent in the second quarter of 2009 year on year after sinking to 6.1 percent in the first quarter.     Zhuang said the improvement of China's industrial structure and increasing energy conservation were of critical importance to the world.     Government figures show the amount of energy consumed in China to produce a unit of gross domestic product (GDP) dropped 3.35 percent year on year in the first half. The decrease compares with 2.88 percent for the first half of last year.     China should also promote domestic consumption to boost economic growth, he said.
