(KGTV) - This weekend 47 teams from high schools around San Diego and other parts of the US will compete in the FIRST California Robotics Regional Championships.The event brings the teens together to test their engineering and science skills. The teams get six weeks to design and build a robot to complete a handful of tasks.But the technology isn't cheap, so many teams turn to local tech companies for donations.San Diego based tech-giant Qualcomm is the title sponsor of the competition. They also give money to individual teams. Organizers say the companies see it as a way to excite teens about careers in STEM."They look at this as their future workforce," says Regional Director David Berggren. "If we can get these kids invested in STEM fields now, they're going to be great future employees, and it's money well spent for the company."The actual dollar amounts aren't given, but some schools say companies donate thousands of dollars each year. Logos on t-shirts and team booths show companies like Apple, Qualcomm, Viasat, 3M, Solar Turbines, BAE Systems, leidos and more have made donations.In addition to the money, companies donate time, providing volunteers to mentor the teens through the design and building process. They work hands on with the teams, giving kids an up close look at careers in STEM fields."It's eye-opening, it's surreal," says Southwest High School Senior Alejandro Gendrop. "To not only have someone aid us with how we're supposed to organize our team, put it together, but also to get a view into the industry and how they work and how similar our work is to theirs, it's great."The competition in Del Mar is Friday and Saturday, and admission is free. DESCANSO, Calif. (KGTV) — A Descanso man has finished carving a Buddha statue into a granite boulder in his backyard. “Buddha is in every tree just looking at you like every rock,” said artist Duncan McFetridge. “It’s connected to our saving our environment — all life is sacred.” Duncan McFetridge says it took six months to carve the 6-foot tall Buddha into the granite. “It occurred to me that this was a perfect time and place to carve a representation of Buddha,” added McFetridge, who was heavily involved in the preservation of the Cleveland National Forest. He estimates he chipped away more than 750 pounds using a combination of hand tools and power tools on the stone carving while working in 4-hour increments every day. “These are incredibly difficult,” said McFetridge pointing to cinnamon roll-sized circles adorning the carving's head, “each one takes about a day.” The 78-year-old says someone recently visited and figured out the Buddha carving faces due east, sticking with an ancient tradition of Buddha statues facing east to represent the moment of the enlightenment. “I didn’t know, I was totally unconscious of this,” said McFetridge, who adds he just picked the rock face because of its accessibility.McFetridge says hundreds have already inquired about visiting the statue to which he says he encourages it. “The Buddha wants to be known,” said McFetridge. 1390

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- Another shark sighting in Del Mar prompted lifeguards to leave in place signs warning swimmers to enter the water at their own risk. According to lifeguards, the five-foot-long shark was spotted at 1 p.m. off 15th street as crews patrolled the area in a boat. Lifeguards say the advisory signs will be taken down in 24 hours unless any more sharks are spotted in the area. The sighting marks the fourth day in a row a shark has been spotted in the area. Research biologists say if a shark is under six feet, they are juveniles and eat smaller fish, posing no threat to people. “If I saw a sub-adult or anything over 6 feet, I would probably personally get out of the water,” Heidi Dewar, Research Biologist at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center said. Despite multiple reports suggesting that the hit sitcom "Friends" would be dropped from Netflix's lineup on Jan. 1, Netflix announced on Monday that the sitcom will remain a part of Netflix's lineup through 2019. Talk about a pivot!The speculation was fueled by a notice on "Friends'" Netflix page that said the sitcom would be on through Jan. 1. DETROIT (AP) — Honda is recalling over 1.6 million minivans and SUVs in the U.S. to fix problems that include faulty backup camera displays, malfunctioning dashboard lights, and sliding doors that don't latch properly. The problems were revealed in four recalls posted Tuesday by the government. They cover certain Odyssey minivans from 2018 to 2020, Pilot SUVs from 2019 through 2021, and Passport SUVs from 2019 and 2020. In a statement posted to its website, the company said they would fix the repairs for free."American Honda will voluntarily recall approximately 608,000 model-year 2018-2020 Honda Odyssey, 2019-2020 Passport and 2019-2021 Pilot vehicles in the United States to complete one or more of four recall repairs, for free," the company said in the statement. "There have been no reports of crashes or injuries related to these actions."Honda has traced the problems to faulty backup camera software programming, water entering door handles, water getting into camera mounting holes, and defective instrument panel software.
