SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - North and South Korea made history Friday by agreeing to officially end the peninsula's civil war. The move brings back chilling memories for Korean War vets in San Diego. 10News reporter Jennifer Delacruz sat down with one of those vets ahead of an Honor Flight to the Washington, D.C. next week. Bob Weishan's trophy room takes him back to a different time -- a time of conflict and destruction."It was interesting," said Weishan. "It's a whole different world that they live in."But when the 87-year-old Korean War veteran looks back today, it's a little different. "It should have happened a long time ago."The resolution of peace between North and South Korea puts even more meaning into the 15 months he was there fighting for freedom.   "You had two options," said Weishan. "One was stay in the trucks and burn to death, or climb out of the trucks and get shot."One of his most haunting memories was watching 100,000 refugees fleeing for their lives. "They were carrying everything they owned with them."Having been there in the trenches, he knows how much his agreement means to those families who left and those still there today. "For the North Koreans, I think they're on their knees every night with prayers that this is a success and that this doesn't fail because it gives them a way out."Although it's still early on, he says it's a step in the right direction. "It's a little bit of hope," said Weishan. "At least they're talking. And if something comes out of it, it could be good."Weishan joins about 25 other vets who leave for their Honor Flight on May 4th.  1670

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police have identified the woman shot and killed, allegedly by her boyfriend, at a Point Loma strip mall earlier this month.San Diego Police said 20-year-old Octavia Williams of Phoenix, Ariz., was fatally shot in the parking lot at 4013 W. Point Loma Blvd. just before midnight on Oct. 9.Paramedics transported Williams to the hospital where she died.MAP: Track crime happening in San Diego CountyPolice identified Williams' killer as 41-year-old Joe Bennette Conway. Conway is believed to be Williams' boyfriend, according to City News Service, and the shooting took place after an argument.Conway was described as 5’7” tall and 150 pounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police have released pictures of a man accused of shooting and killing a 27-year-old man in the Midway District in late February.Police say Ernesto Castallenos Martinez, 41, shot and killed Alexander Mazin in a parking lot behind the 24 Hour Fitness on the 3600 block of Midway Drive.Following the shooting, police were led to the intersection of 30th Street and Upas Street where an hours-long standoff took place.RELATED: Police identify Midway District shooting victim, suspect of North Park standoff?After SWAT teams entered an apartment in the area, they didn’t find Martinez. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One of San Diego's most famous malls is poised for a multi-million dollar renovation. On Wednesday, Fashion Valley will announce a project to add what it describes as inviting public spaces, enriched landscaping, broader dining and gathering places, tranquil outdoor lounges and water features, and increased personal shopping and valet services. It's the mall's biggest project since it added a second story in the mid-1990s. Vicki Hanor, a senior vice president with Simon Malls, said in a statement Fashion Valley is home to more than 50 retailers exclusive to San Diego, and prides itself on providing the ultimate shopping and dining experience. Fashion Valley's project is the latest major facelift of a mall in San Diego.Westfield UTC recently added a new wing, plus an apartment tower. In Del Mar Heights, the new One Paseo just leased its entire retail wing. And in downtown, Horton Plaza will be transformed into a tech hub. Reg Kobzi, a senior vice president at commercial real-estate firm CBRE, said Fashion Valley remains one of San Diego's most successful malls, even drawing shoppers from Mexico. Still, he said it has to invest to retain that status. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Palomar College has placed its president on leave pending an investigation.The college district announced Wednesday that Superintendent and President Joi Lin Blake was placed on paid leave following a report warning of the college district's fiscal instability.“It is my request that we all respect the privacy of all parties at this time. Doing so will allow us to focus on the important work of the District. The report cites that the college district's adopted 2019-20 budget will have a ,748,859 deficit. According to the district in the report, the 2018-19 budget had a ,220,001 deficit.The report stated that the district's salary and benefits costs "continue to increase year after year at a rate greater than revenue growth."The college district "has a high probability of fiscal insolvency in the near future" at its current pace, the report warned. The report adds that in two years the district "will have consumed all reserves and will be forced to borrow .5 million from an external source to remain solvent."The district said placing Blake on leave was not as a disciplinary action but "as a precautionary measure to protect all parties." In a corrected statement, the Palomar Community College District Board of Trustees said Assistant Superintendent and Palomar Vice President Jack Kahnh has assumed administrative responsibility of the district.
