As the Democrats kicked off Night No. 1 of its four-night virtual national convention, George Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd spoke out against his brother’s death.Philonise Floyd led the convention in a moment of silence in honor of his brother and others who have died as victims of "hate and injustice.""George should be alive today,” Philonise Floyd said. “Breonna Taylor should be alive today. Ahmaud Arbery should be alive today. Eric Garner should be alive today. Stephon Clark, Atatiana Jefferson, Sandra Bland—they should all be alive today. So it's up to us to carry on the fight."While most of those named by Philonise Floyd died while in police custody, Arbery was killed in a shooting by civilians. Three Georgia men, Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and William "Roddie" Bryan were charged in connection with Arbery's death. His death came to light after it took 74 days before anyone was charged in connection with his death. Preceding Floyd at the virtual convention was Muriel Bowser, Washington D.C.’s Democratic mayor who called out President Donald Trump for using federal agents to deploy tear gas on a crowd of Black Lives Matter protests. During the height of the protests, federal agents used tear gas to disperse a crowd moments before Trump emerged from the White House to visit a burned out church across the street from the White House.“Where we were peacefully protesting, Donald Trump was plotting,” she said. “He stood in front of one of our most treasured houses of worship and held a Bible for a photo op. He sent troops in camouflage into our streets. He sent tear gas into the air—federal helicopters, too. I knew if he did this to D.C., he would do it to your city or your town.”During Bowser’s remarks, Trump’s campaign panned Bowser for saying she was “proud” of protesters. While Bowser wouldn’t initially commit to removing a “Defund the Police” mural from a D.C. street, city crews have since paved over the mural. 1967

At least five Marines assigned to the prestigious ceremonial Silent Drill Platoon in Washington were placed in pretrial confinement in recent days due to allegations they were involved in hazing at least one Marine at the unit, according to three defense officials.Hearings that took place this week resulted in one Marine being released from confinement but all could still face charges as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service has taken over the matter. The number of alleged victims has not been made public but the allegations came to light when one Marine came forward. Officials say a video had been made allegedly showing some Marines hitting at least one other Marine. It is not publicly known if that victim is the Marine who came forward. The platoon is a 24-man rifle unit that performs a drill exhibition largely in silence. It was founded in 1948 and performed for presidents and top officials as well as communities around the country tossing and spinning 10-pound M1 rifles with fixed bayonets.Multiple performances of the drill team were canceled in recent weeks due to the ongoing investigation, according to officials. The Marines did not publicize the reason for those cancellations or which performances were affected. The Marines said they began an investigation immediately at the unit, before turning it over the NCIS.The unit and the Marines are well known in the Washington community where they reside. In September they gained attention when several Marines ran to a nearby apartment complex to help rescue elderly residents when it caught fire. 1580

As our country works to rebound, companies are managing the pressure of keeping workplaces safe.Employers are taking precautions ahead of Thanksgiving with concerns about the coronavirus spreading over the holiday.Companies are doing everything from issuing memos, reminding workers about the public health guidance on gatherings and travel, to asking workers to sign pledges they'll keep gatherings small. But there are limits to how much say your boss has on what you're doing outside of work.“They are allowed to inquire about what their travel plans might be, what their off-duty conduct might be and they can ask employees to disclose that information,” said Christine Lamb, an employment attorney with Fortis Law Partners.Lamb says many states prevent employers from discriminating against workers who are doing things outside of work that are lawful. But if you aren't following policies your work put in place for COVID-19, they can ask you to go through some type of coaching or counseling.Lamb advises companies against checking in on their workers on social media.“You might have an employee who is at a gathering of 50 people and they're not posting anything on social media. The employer might not know what's going on and another employee that posts a photograph of them with 10 people on social media, there's just a risk of that unequal application of the rules,” said Lamb. She says one thing employers should be thinking about now is what does next week look like for the company post-Thanksgiving. That includes having a plan for people to work from home if that's possible. One drug maker told the Wall Street Journal that it's offering workers a paid 2-week quarantine if they need it after the holiday, where they'll be expected to work from home. 1773
