(KGTV) — A local man is hoping for answers after his mother was found murdered during a girl's trip to Turks and Caicos.Marie Kuhnla, 62, set off on the trip to a Club Med resort with her two friends and fellow public defenders in New York.Rick Kuhnla Jr. told 10news his mother was excited about the trip and recalls pestering his her to take her sunscreen because she got sunburn on a previous trip.Her friends say a few days into their trip on October 14, Marie went to her room to take nap and wasn't heard from again.Her body was discovered in bushes on the edge of the resort days later. Police told her friends she had been strangled. It's difficult for her son to talk about the phone call he received about her death. 760

SOLANA BEACH (KGTV) - The heat wave is creating a stomach-turning sight at some of San Diego's North County Beaches.Water temperatures near 80 degrees are keeping local beaches packed. Lili Waters spends a lot of time at Table Top Beach, just north of Fletcher Cove, in Solana Beach. Tuesday was not the perfect beach day she expected."Normally, this is a really nice beach, but it's been absolutely horrible today," said Waters.She noticed an unusual amount of kelp and flies along the shoreline."Then, I looked down and I was like, hey, kids there's maggots all over the ground and they're like what, I said look down there's maggots and then they started running," said Waters.Seagulls are feeding on the maggots which are all over the beach near the piles of kelp."It's pretty disgusting," said Waters.What's disgusting to beachgoers is actually important to the marine life."As the kelp breaks down, the flies create larvae, and then the birds eat the larvae, the larvae is washed into the ocean, the fish eat the larvae it creates nutrients and food for shore birds," said San Diego Lifeguard Captain Jason Shook.Shook said the heat is killing the kelp which is attracting flies. Beaches from Torrey Pines to Carlsbad may see large piles of kelp wash up during the summer months."Those large reefs trap the kelp and then the kelp washes a shore in that area," said Captain Shook.Some visitors complained to lifeguards, but there's little they can do."It happens generally in the warmer months and it usually coincides with the grunion season, which is March through the end of August. So, then we are restricted on our beach-raking areas. We are not allowed to rake the beach along the high tide line so the kelp will build up a little bit," said Captain Shook."There's a ton of seaweed. It's all wrapping around your feet when you're in there, like I said, it's horrible," said Waters.Although it's unpleasant for visitors, it's important to the food chain."Some people don't want to be bothered by the kelp when they go to the beach. They don't like the smell, and the stuff that it brings along like the larvae, but it is a natural occurrence," said Captain Shook. "It's a really fragile ecosystem that we need to respect." 2275

He died trying to stop the rampaging gunman, who killed 11 others in the attack in Thousand Oaks, California."He went into save lives, to save other people." SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - An injured sea lion spotted on a North San Diego County beach prompted lifeguards to place shark warning signs along a stretch of coastline Thursday. The incident was reported about 9:30 a.m. at 2525 South Coast Highway near Tower 11 at Cardiff State Beach, according to California State Parks officials. A jogger reported the sea lion with a missing tail and gash on its back, washed up on the beach.SeaWorld San Diego experts responded to the area but told 10News the sea lion later died due to the severity of its injuries. They confirmed the female sea lion was bitten by a shark.Lifeguards posted aggressive shark advisories for beachgoers from Cardiff Reef in the north to Seaside State Beach in the south, officials said. There was no immediate word on the type of shark involved. The incident Thursday marks the sixth shark sighting over the last several weeks in the waters off San Diego. Shark sightings several days in a row prompted shark advisories in Del Mar in July. A shark sighting in Coronado also forced lifeguards to post signs warning beachgoers about the presence of sharks. A shark advisory means that a shark has been spotted in the water and swimmers should enter at their own risk. Tammy Duckworth, who just gave birth to her second child, is attempting the rare move of changing longstanding Senate rules in order to accommodate senators with newborns.The Illinois Democrat has submitted a resolution this week that would allow senators to bring a child under one year old to the Senate floor during votes, which they currently cannot do."After many positive, constructive conversations with her colleagues on both sides of the aisle, Sen. Duckworth is glad to be able to offer this legislation to ensure no senator with an infant is prevented from performing their constitutional responsibilities -- and send a message that working parents everywhere deserve family-friendly workplace policies," said Kaitlin Fahey, Duckworth's chief of staff, in a statement provided to CNN on Monday. "She is optimistic that this will be resolved quickly."Duckworth gave birth to a baby girl on April 9 becoming the first US senator to do so while in office. The senator decided to take her maternity leave in Washington rather than in Illinois so as to be on hand and available to cast her vote, if needed.Leading up to giving birth, the senator openly expressed concerns how the Senate rules might impact her ability to do so while caring for her newborn."If I have to vote, and I'm breastfeeding my child, especially during my maternity leave period, what do I do? Leave her sitting outside?"
