SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A record number of Americans filed for unemployment for the first time last week, leading to increased competition for the jobs that are available.The Labor Department reported Thursday that nearly 2.9 million workers are now seeking weekly payments from the government amid coronavirus-related closures. In San Diego County, the Workforce Partnership reports that it has received notice from 92 companies totaling roughly 12,000 workers — those notices, however, are voluntary, so the actual number could be much higher. Those workers could receive up to 0 per week from the state of California, plus an additional 0 from the federal government's stimulus package. "I'm in an industry that is vulnerable to situations like this in the future, so what do I have to do about it to guarantee that this doesn't happen to me and my family again in the future? That's my question," said Sean O'Hara, who recently lost his job as general manager of the now-closed Splash Cafe at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, which is operated by the French Gourmet. "All the restaurants are closed that I can see. "A lot of the influx in hiring that's happening right now is in response to this current situation, and so a lot of these positions, while some may continue to be permanent, I think a lot of them are temporary by nature," Merfalen said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos family is hoping surveillance video will help track down the man recorded making himself comfortable in their home.Along Wallsey Drive, the Meduna family got a heart-sinking scare the day before Halloween.Around 8:30 a.m, Megan Meduna and her husband both got a notification that their garage door was open.  Inside the home, a camera was recording an intruder. Meduna says the man had pried open a window screen in the front and forced open a window.  A sound heard in the video is the burglar opening the door to the garage, before he's seen shutting the window he just climbed through. As he puts on his gloves, he walks up to the camera and flips it over."It's just creepy, creepy to see someone in my house sneaking around," said Meduna.By the time police arrived, the man was gone. He got away with only a little bit of cash, but the impact was felt across a neighborhood.  Surveillance video showed him casing the area.  Minutes before the break-in, a neighbor reported seeing the man knocking at her door, then pretending to need directions when she answered the door.  At another home, a ripped screen was found near a side window and an out-of-place brick was discovered outside another window.Neighbors are now wondering if the same man could be linked to other burglaries. A few weeks ago and blocks away, 10News reported on a break-in with a similar MO that left a newlywed couple missing wedding gifts and family heirlooms.  A month ago, there was a another burglary at Meduna's home, in which electronics and jewelry were taken."Feel violated and angry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A medical helicopter transporting a heart from Grossmont Hospital for transplant crashed on the helipad of a Los Angeles-area hospital on Friday.The AgustaWestland A109 medical helicopter flipped onto its side after experiencing a hard landing on the roof of Keck Hospital of USC at about 3:15 p.m., according to a statement from the hospital. Three people on board, the pilot and two medical personnel, escaped without major injuries. Nobody on the ground or in the hospital was injured, the hospital and FAA said. Patient care at the hospital was not interrupted.The helicopter was carrying a heart from Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, according to helicopter service provider Helinet. The hospital said in a statement that the organ was safely delivered to the intended patient in time for surgery.“We are fully cooperating with the NTSB and FAA on their investigations,” said Helinet COO and President Sean M. Cross. “Our company prides itself on professional operation and maintenance of aircraft as core values - the safety of our customers and pilots is always our top priority. We are happy that at this time there appear to have been no serious injuries.”The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.Helinet says it completed more than 1,300 helicopter air ambulance missions in 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Rolando resident is taking Halloween decor to new heights this month, with a NASA-themed display outside his home.Greg Jones is known in the neighborhood for his elaborate Halloween displays. Every year, locals expect an out-of-this-world display. This year, he took that reputation literally.Saturday night, dozens of neighbors and volunteers witnessed the inaugural rocket launch outside the home at 4648 Rolando Blvd., which took months to complete.The celebratory launch came complete with Jones in costume as an astronaut, a moon rover, space capsules, and a 30-foot rocket.The massive space display will be up through Halloween, with a "rocket launch" visible each night.In years past, Jones has delivered a heaping dose of Halloween to his street, bringing mammoth displays including a giant Octopus and King Kong to life over his home. 872

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local father is recovering from stab wounds after getting attacked by an intruder in his home. The man's 20-year-old son shot and killed that intruder according to San Diego Police. It happened just before 6:30 Tuesday morning at a home in the 6300 block of Lake Shore Drive in San Carlos. Neighbors heard the violence. "I heard the gunshots, it was like three or four gunshots, then screams for help immediately after," said Denise Rolla. When police got to the home, they found the suspect dead in the pool and the 54-year-old homeowner with stab wounds to the upper body. Police say the homeowner's son shot and killed the intruder, who stumbled out the back and landed in the pool. "I heard what turned out to be the suspect fall into the pool and then a couple minutes later, you could see the blood start to spread out through the pool," said Andrew Grogg, who lives right next door. There are walking paths and Mission Trails Golf Course is located behind the homes which are just southwest of Jackson Drive. Neighbors say they don't have a problem with transients in the area, but police say so far, it appears the 38-year-old suspect is homeless. His name hasn't been released. The family owns a tire shop in La Mesa. They are well known and liked in the community. "They're local business owners in the community. They're great neighbors. They're kind, they're nice," said Grogg. Police say so far, the attack appears to be random. 1472
