New Yorkers are used to a lot of traffic. All day, every day streets are filled with cars, but for one day, busy streets will be car-free.In celebration of Earth Day, 30 blocks of New York City will only be open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic.From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Broadway will be closed to car traffic between Times Square and Union Square.Within those streets, several programs and activities will be made available to visitors, including fitness classes, performances and other activities.Citi Bike is also offering free day passes through its app.The goal is to encourage people to choose more environmentally-friendly methods of transportation.A portion of Washington Heights will also be closed between West 181st and West 190th streets on St. Nicholas Avenue.  785

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A Pasco County, Florida family is suing the Pasco County School Board alleging their son was shown pornographic videos on a school-issued iPad."It wasn't a personal cell phone. It wasn't a personal iPad. It was school equipment and the school internet," said the boy's mother, Jennifer Haag.The lawsuit claims two older male students showed Haag's son inappropriate videos during a free class period at River Ridge Middle School in New Port Richey. She said this continued for three months."It was considered a recess for the special needs children, all different ages for middle schoolers and they were just allowed to have free time," Haag said.The lawsuit states the incident happened in 2015 when the student was 11-years old. The lawsuit claims the student has suffered mental and emotional harm. The lawsuit also claims the iPads had "inadequate security features allowing students to access obscene and pornographic materials."Haag said her son told a teacher that students were viewing these videos."He finally got the courage to go to the adult that was supervising and try to tell him bad things were going on and he was told to 'stop being a tattle tale' and to go play," said Haag.Haag said she hopes school leaders pay better attention."I was absolutely devastated and heartbroken. New York is adding new measures to prevent people from dying while taking selfies at a waterfall in the Catskill Mountains.The picturesque Kaaterskill Falls is one of the most visited spots in southeast New York state. However, capturing the perfect photo for social media turned fatal for several people.“I cringe, when someone is where they shouldn’t be,” says Peter Innes with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. “Because they are just too close to the edge.”Four deaths in the past several years occurred due to the victims being too close to the edge, while taking or posing for photos. Officials say it’s now considered one of the riskiest activities at the park.“A lot of people would think about ice climbing or rock climbing, back country skiing,” says Robert Dawson, a forest ranger. “It’s actually picture taking, because everyone can do it now.”The park sees tens of thousands more visitors annually than they did just a couple decades ago. A lot of that is due to visitors posting photos on their social media platforms, attracting new visitors seeking similar photo ops.“Or they’ll put it on YouTube, and they wanna see how many hits they can get on it,” explains Dawson.“So, then they wanna make those really cool videos. That’s where they’re willing to take that extra risk.“Then people will see that and be like, ‘I wanna go up there.’” Two of the most recent deaths—in 2016—occurred after the state had already made safety changes.Officials added a staircase to prevent slipping, as well as fencing to keep people from the edge. However, people continued to walk around it despite the obvious park signage.   “We realized there was a problem because of the continued fatalities,” says Innes.Innes helped draft new regulations that went into effect this month.“People are now not allowed to get within 6 feet of the cliff’s edges themselves,” says Innes of the new policy. “They also can’t swim within 150 feet of the top of the falls.”Now, rangers like Dawson have the authority to ticket and even forcibly remove anyone putting themselves at risk.“Before I was just like, ‘Hey, I really don’t want you to do this,’ and some groups will listen some are like, ‘Hey, it’s a free country,’” says Dawson.If he could offer just one piece of advice to Instagram-happy trail goers, Dawson says, “You can still get that great picture; you can do it 10 feet away from the edge and you’ll get the same effect.” 2470

NEW YORK CITY -- Diners at a restaurant in New York City are requesting bubbles. But not the kind of bubbles to float away on, or to drink.Cafe du Soleil has created bubble seating for its customers. The Alvantor bubbles are plastic and can zip open or closed on two sides. There is plenty of room for a table of four inside."People love it. It's very supple. It's very cozy," owner Alain Chevreax said.He started preparing for cold weather early."I ordered the first bubble in July to try out because I was already thinking about the fall weather," Chevreax said.The restaurant now has 16 bubble tables.Cafe du Soleil is one of thousands of New York City restaurants struggling to stay afloat due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Chevreaux said he hopes the bubbles keep diners warm and dry as the temperature drops. He estimated the bubbles will be useful until the temperature goes below 45 degrees."Now people are aware of the bubble and when they make a reservation they say, 'Can we have a bubble?' I say, 'Of course you can have a bubble,'" Chevreaux said.In addition to comfort, customers Alfred and Barbara MacAdam said they like that they're protected from other people's germs."It also helps the restaurant bring more people in because you are enclosed and therefore protected," Alfred MacAdam said.While Cafe du Soleil has a plan to supplement indoor dining, which begins in New York on Sept. 30 at 25% capacity, many city restaurants do not.Despite the start of the fall season on Tuesday, Andrew Rigie, of the New York City Hospitality Alliance, said the city still has not given restaurants guidance on heat lamps."We have really been pushing the city, saying these small business owners need an opportunity to plan,” Rigie said. “Are you going to allow propane, which they can't currently use? Can they use electric?"Rigie said he hopes the state will eventually allow New York City restaurants to increase indoor dining to 50% capacity.
