With a rising number of positive COVID-19 cases in Northeast Ohio and local government-imposed requirements to wear them in public places, it is safe to say that masks are here to stay for the foreseeable future. To help alleviate one particular annoyance of wearing masks, a North Ridgeville company is seeking a patent on its mask design that prevents the mask wearer's glasses from fogging.Larry Nolan, the owner of Versa-Flex Inc., filed paperwork with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic began, seeking a design patent for his anti-fog mask. Nolan, who has spent the better part of his adult life inventing and designing high-quality bags and carrying cases for the camera and film equipment, initially didn't want to make masks. However, he began to seriously consider the venture when a friend of his presented him with a problem."She said the biggest problem they have is their glasses fogging up," Nolan said. "It took me a minute and a half, seriously, a minute and a half and I said, 'that's not a problem. Seriously, that's not a problem.'" After coming up with the design for the three-part mask, which features a gasket-like top layer that extends over the nose and upper cheekbone, Nolan began sewing."You have a cotton-polyester layer. [There is] a filter in the center. And I have a cool mesh on the inside that helps make your breathing easier," Nolan said. Nolan is also working on a design that could incorporate an N-95 or P-95 mask.Versa-Flex is selling its three-layer masks on its website and through Etsy. The masks also come with a variety of different decals, including the United States Marine Corps, the Rocky River Pirates, Lakewood Rangers, and the North Ridgeville Rangers. The company also sells mask designs to look like the Cleveland Browns logo. The masks are made by hand and can be purchased from to .75."I have a hard time saying no. People say you have to say no or you're not going to make any money," Nolan said. "That's the problem, I don't know how to say no and I don't make any money." Nolan's first breakthrough product came in the early 1990s. It was a five-in-one reflector used by photographers and videographers. However, Nolan said the product's intellectual property was quickly stolen and taken to China where it could be mass-produced. The saga taught him a valuable lesson, he said."It's been a tough road," Nolan said. "Things just keep on changing. There is no such thing as a steady flow. Everything is a change. You have to adapt."Adapt, he did. Versa-Flex, which is a combination of the words versatile and flexible, has been a mantra of sorts for the company. Nolan has secured multiple contracts with the NFL, NFL Films, and HBO's Hard Knocks for different bags used to carry or conceal audio equipment needed for a television production."I don't see the numbers in my head. I don't. I see designs. I see ideas," Nolan said. "I don't sleep at night because all I do is think."Nolan, a disabled veteran, said his knack for inventing and tinkering came from his biological father, whom he shares a patent with for a blow-up toilet seat cushion. Nolan jokes about the absurdity of the product now. After high school, Nolan enlisted in the Navy, where he continued to invent."You see all this stuff that's on this aircraft carrier. They had to start from scratch. Everything on this carrier is an invention. Everything," Nolan said. "Everything you see in this space, somebody had to create it, design it, draw it, and get it off the ground. If it didn't work, they had to try the second time. It's perseverance. You can't give up you can't surrender."All of Nolan's products are made in the United States, using as many domestically made products as he can. His most recent purchase, a massive embroidery machine, was manufactured by a company in Solon. By having high standards for quality, Nolan said many of his products have lasted longer than the companies that purchased them."It takes just as much labor to make a crap product as it does to make a good one. It's just material costs are slightly different," Nolan said.WEWS' Jordan Vandenberge first reported this story. 4245

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard has been arrested in Winnipeg. Court records show Nygard, 79, was arrested under the Extradition Act and is set to appear in a Winnipeg courtroom this afternoon.According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Nygard faces a nine-count indictment in the United States on racketeering, sex trafficking, and related crimes.Manhattan federal prosecutors stated Nygard’s charges relate to a “decades-long pattern of criminal conduct involving at least dozens of victims in the United States, the Bahamas, and Canada, among other locations.”Earlier this year, U.S. federal authorities raided the Manhattan headquarters of the Canadian fashion mogul in February. This search came amid claims he trafficked and sexually assaulted dozens of teenage girls and women. The FBI searched the designer’s Times Square offices less than two weeks after 10 women filed a lawsuit accusing Nygard of enticing young and impoverished women to his estate in the Bahamas with cash and promises of modeling opportunities.According to prosecutors, from 1995 to 2020, Nygard used his international fashion brand to recruit and pay for sex with the victims, who were put on the payroll as “models” or “assistants.”Prosecutors said Nygard allegedly referred to the victims as his “girlfriends,” which required them to travel and stay with him at his palatial properties in California, the Bahamas, and Canada.According to the press release, Nygard allegedly hosted so-called “Pamper Parties,” named for their buffet, open bar, and spa treatments, to recruit more girls and young women.According to prosecutors, he allegedly would use a “girlfriend” or employee to scout out a chosen victim — who would then be forced into sexual activity and paid in cash.Prosecutors said Nygard also is accused of hosting sexual “swaps” with other friends and business associates, who would bring a “date” to trade for sex with one of his “girlfriends.”Nygard kept the “girlfriends” under constant surveillance, insisting they needed his permission to leave the properties, prosecutors said.According to the AP, several of Nygard’s victims claim they were 14 or 15 years old when the fashion mogul gave them alcohol or drugs and then raped them. 2300

While public health experts have acknowledged the risk for healthy athletes when becoming infected with the coronavirus has been rather low, lingering questions have remained on if the virus causes long-term cardiac damage.Doctors from the Sports and Exercise Cardiology Section of the American College of Cardiology released some of their preliminary findings on the effect the coronavirus has on athletes’ hearts. With college football fully resuming this week with the return of the Pac-12, and college basketball slated to get underway next month, sports are beginning to return to normal amid the pandemic. While some athletes are being frequently tested for the virus, testing alone has not stopped team-wide outbreaks from occurring.Despite there being some limited evidence that the virus causes cardiac injury to athletes, researchers wrote in JAMA that heart damage alone should not be the primary reason to postpone athletic competitions amid the pandemic.“While concerns about the implications of cardiac injury attributable to COVID-19 infection deserve further study, they should not constitute a primary justification for the cancellation or postponement of sports,” the researchers wrote.“Rather than canceling sports because of unsubstantiated concerns about cardiac safety based on limited data of unestablished clinical relevance, this decision should be driven by the need to limit viral spread,” researchers added. “With uncontrolled community transmission, we share concerns with public health officials about risks of increased disease transmission attributable to the resumption of organized sports. Accordingly, the decision to proceed with or delay organized sports should be based on community disease prevalence, coupled with the availability of resources that can be responsibly allocated to identify and prevent new infections among athletes.”The researchers said that initial findings have produced only a handful of cases of cardiac injury, but stressed that more research is needed.“Reports of presumptive myocarditis among several athletes with high profiles have magnified concerns about COVID-19 CV sequelae in athletes,” the researchers wrote. “Our combined experience suggests that most athletes with COVID-19 are asymptomatic to mildly ill, and to date, (return to play) risk stratification has yielded few cases of relevant cardiac pathology. However, we underscore that these observations may not reflect the true prevalence and attendant prognosis of COVID-19 CV involvement in athletes.”As far as what players should do following their 10-day isolation period, assuming they minimal coronavirus symptoms?“We do not advocate for (cardiovascular) risk stratification among athletes who remain completely asymptomatic with prior COVID-19 infection, following completion of US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guided self-isolation,” the researchers wrote. “Given the current lack of published data, consideration of comprehensive screening for this population could be reasonable if it is based on research and data collection.”The Big Ten, which was among several leagues that held out on playing at the start of the football season, requires athletes to undergo cardiovascular screening following a positive coronavirus test. Part of what concerned the Big Ten initially was reports that a number of its athletes who tested positive for the virus had shown myocarditis symptoms.According to the National Institutes of Health, myocarditis is an acute injury that “leads to myocyte damage, which in turn activates the innate and humeral immune system, leading to severe inflammation.”“All COVID-19 positive student-athletes will have to undergo comprehensive cardiac testing to include labs and biomarkers, ECG, Echocardiogram and a Cardiac MRI,” the Big Ten said in a statement. “Following cardiac evaluation, student-athletes must receive clearance from a cardiologist designated by the university for the primary purpose of cardiac clearance for COVID-19 positive student-athletes. The earliest a student-athlete can return to game competition is 21 days following a COVID-19 positive diagnosis. “In addition to the medical protocols approved, the 14 Big Ten institutions will establish a cardiac registry in an effort to examine the effects on COVID-19 positive student-athletes. The registry and associated data will attempt to answer many of the unknowns regarding the cardiac manifestations in COVID-19 positive elite athletes.”To read an abstract of the research, click here. 4546
