IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - Organizers of the Imperial Beach Sun and Sea Festival say they're ready to go this year, despite a recent sewage spill from Tijuana."It's always on my mind," says Co-Chair Shirley Nakawatase. "I think it's an ongoing situation that we have at the beach."Nakawatase says the spill shouldn't impact the festival, because they only use ocean water for the sandcastle competition. If the water is considered unsafe, they can use fresh water purchased from Cal-Am."We're going to request daily testing to make sure the bacteria count is low," she says, noting that testing will begin on the Monday before the festival.A recent sewage spill dumped 3.5 million gallons of sewage into the ocean south of Imperial Beach, prompting a full closure of the coast in the area. So far this year, Imperial Beach has lost 50 days of beach time because of sewage-contaminated water.RELATED: Imperial Beach Coastline closed due to runoffThe Sun and Sea Festival brings thousands to Imperial Beach every summer for a day of sandcastle competition, concerts, food and more. This year's festival will be on July 13th. The theme is "Under the Sea.""It can just make people smile," says Co-Chair Leah Goodwin. "If you spend the whole day at the beach and give people a memory, that takes you away from some of the craziness. That's why we do this."As for the sewage concerns, Nakawatase says people don't need to worry."Nothing's going to spoil the party," she says. 1481

In a vote Thursday night, the Milwaukee Public School board voted to end their contract with the Milwaukee Police Department. The 8,000 yearly contract allowed for the schools to have up to six officers available to respond to incidents on school grounds.Protesters were asking that the money go toward helping students in other ways. Students and parents expressed concerns about school leadership's willingness to call the police when something happened."We had senior pranks. I don’t think the police should have been called for our senior prank. Bringing eggs and toilet tissue to school. There shouldn’t be police outside of school giving us tickets for doing our senior prank,” said Madison Walker who attended Rufus King High School.Milwaukee has become the latest school district to end formal relationships with local police departments or stop school resource officer programs. In early June, the Minneapolis Public School Board voted unanimously to end their contract with Minneapolis police to have officers on campuses. Portland, Oregon followed soon after. Just last week, Denver, Seattle and two districts in the Oakland area voted to end their formal relationships with local police. Time Magazine reported the presence of officers on school campuses has increased in the last two decades, partially because of the increase in school shootings since the 1999 tragedy at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Prior to Thursday's vote in Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Police Department issued a statement."We agree with the many voices from our community who believe that the funding should be reinvested into our public school system to support social services. Regardless of the vote, MPD will continue to support MPS and MPS students," they wrote. This story was originally reported by Julia Marshall on TMJ4.com. 1844

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) -- The City of Imperial Beach announced Tuesday that it will be asking for a federal investigation into a toxic sewage spill at Playas de Tijuana that polluted U.S. beaches.According to the city, the spill on October 26 and 27 sickened local surfers at Imperial Beach, including Mayor Serge Dedina.RELATED: 'Stop the Poop' group protests cross-border sewage spillsWater testing by Tijuana Waterkeeper revealed elevated levels of pollution at Playas de Tijuana. Officials in Mexico have denied there was any sewage spill.“We are asking for State Department investigation into this sewage spill that significantly impacted public health in Imperial Beach. Like the massive February spill, it appears that authorities in Baja California who run the sewage agency, CESPT, are more concerned with covering up pollution than protecting public health,” said Imperial Beach, Mayor Serge Dedina.RELATED: Frustrated Imperial Beach mayor to file a lawsuit to protect city from Mexican raw sewage spill“Federal authorities in Mexico must improve efforts to provide real time information on spills so that we can protect the health of recreational beach users on both sides of the border,” said Mayor Dedina. 1243

In a Facebook Live interview Thursday with company founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Dr. Anthony Fauci reiterated that America is making costly mistakes in fighting the novel coronavirus.Fauci, the White House's top expert on infectious diseases, blamed some states — without naming them specifically — for "skipping steps" and reopening too quickly."You've got to do it correctly. You can't jump over steps, which is very perilous when you think about rebound," Fauci said. "The proof in the pudding is: Look what's happened. There really is no reason why we're having 40-, 50-, 60,000 (new cases per day) other than the fact that we're not doing something correctly."Fauci urged Americans not to look at social distancing restrictions in opposition to a return to economic normalcy, but as a means to rebounding."We should be looking at public health issues as a gateway to getting the economy back," Fauci said.Zuckerberg agreed with Fauci — and even took a dig at the Trump administration."It's really disappointing that we still don't have adequate testing, that the credibility of our top scientists like yourself and the CDC are being undermined and until recently parts of the administration were calling into question whether people should even follow basic best practices like wearing a mask.," Zuckerberg said.Fauci's hour-long conversation with Zuckerberg comes days after the White House's top trade expert Peter Navarro published an op-ed in USA Today in an attempt to discredit Fauci. President Donald Trump later said that Navarro "shouldn't be doing that," and USA Today has said the piece did not meet the paper's fact-checking standards. On Wednesday, in an interview with The Atlantic, Fauci called the episode "bizarre," and urged other White House staffers to end political infighting regarding the pandemic.Once a staple on television — both news interviews and in the White House's daily coronavirus task force briefings — Fauci has been notably absent from the airwaves in recent weeks. When asked by The Atlantic if the administration was curtailing his TV appearances, Fauci said he couldn't comment, but added that "I think you know what the answer to that is."Trump maintains that he and Fauci have a "very good relationship." 2261

I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of Dr. Rebecca Shadowen, a front line hero who worked tirelessly to protect the lives of others. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and colleagues.https://t.co/sAPptGy0lJ— Governor Andy Beshear (@GovAndyBeshear) September 12, 2020 297
