SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man who is accused of falling asleep drunk with a lit cigarette, starting a Rancho Bernardo fire that killed his two children in 2017, has been sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison.Henry Lopez was convicted last September of involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment, and recklessly starting the fire that killed 7-year-old Isabella and 10-year-old Cristos.Wednesday, victim impact statements were read aloud — including a statement by Lopez — before the judge sentenced Lopez to 12 years and eight months behind bars.“[The] defendant has completely and utterly failed to accept the consequences of his actions. These horrible deaths were completely avoidable. The defendants actions caused a lot of pain. Prosecutors say Lopez fell asleep with a lit cigarette that likely made contact with a defective cell phone, sparking the blaze. Lopez woke up to find his home on fire and tried to escape but passed out from the smoke, fire investigators said.His two children died in the blaze. Investigators say Cristos was burned to death and Isabella passed out from smoke inhalation and never woke up.Throughout the sentencing hearing Wednesday, heated moments erupted from Lopez's ex-wife and even one of the jurors."I told you if you continued on this path of reckless behavior something bad was going to happen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new report released by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection states wildfire acreage burned in 2019 is down 96% compared to 2018.Stating from January to August in 2018, 621,784 acres burned. In 2019, only 24,579 acres scorched during the same time period.On top of this, the U.S. Drought Monitor released a report Thursday showing most of California is out of the drought. San Diego is the only county fully highlighted in yellow, indicating it is 'Abnormally Dry'.A very stark contrast to 2018, where most of the map is covered in dark shades of drought. In August of 2018 San Diego was labeled in 'Severe Drought'.While the winter rain cured California's drought, it brought a new problem to firefighters. Tall weeds, and new growth act as kindling, launching fires, according to Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots.So we're not out of the woods.Historically San Diego has had some of it's biggest fires in the Fall and Winter, whipped up by Santa Ana winds. "Our fuels are going to continue to dry out an we're not going to be getting rain for quite a while longer so even though we've had the marine layer sticking in and that's really helped us, in the long run those heavy rains that we need, we're probably not going to see for several months," he said. "Late October is usually when we see the Santa Ana winds. We are expecting our normal winds this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A pair of North San Diego County residences may become the latest local site to receive a national historic place designation.The Boathouses in Encinitas will be considered at an Aug. 1 meeting by the California State Historical Resources Commission to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.On 3rd Street, the pair of boathouses, known as the S.S. Moonlight and the S.S. Encinitas, sit blocks from the water but remain very much connected to 1920s life on the water. They were always intended to be homes and not actual vessels, but also meant to replicate the appearance and scale of boats at the time.Today, the homes represent what the California agency calls "an architecturally significant example of Fantasy-themed programmatic residential architecture." In short: Residential architecture meant to resemble something other than a traditional building.The boathouses were purchased by the Encinitas Preservation Association in 2008 and are currently rented out as private homes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man who admitted to several "Peeping Tom" instances in the Pacific Beach area was sentenced Wednesday.James Wayne Hubbard, 48, was sentenced to 364 days in jail for the series of incidents between Sept. 11 and Oct. 12.Hubbard pleaded guilty to three counts of peeping and prowling as part of a plea deal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A jury returned several guilty verdicts Friday against a La Jolla restaurant owner accused of raping eight women who he either drugged or knew were too intoxicated to consent to sex.Jurors found 61-year-old Daniel Dorado guilty of 20 counts in connection with alleged rapes that happened in 2009, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018. Some of the counts Doroado was found guilty of include two counts of rape of an unconscious person; two counts of rape of an intoxicated person; two counts of assault with intent to commit rape, sodomy oral copulation or sexual penetration of an unconscious or intoxicated person; two counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious person with an unknown object; and two counts of sexual penetration of an intoxicated person with an unknown object.Dorado had faced 35 felony counts. The jury acquitted him on three counts, deadlocked on six counts, and have not yet reached verdicts on six remaining counts.
